  • Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.

  • Mungyung area has contributed to korean industrial development with its abundant natural resources. However, the change of industrial structure caused the decrease of the number of mines in Mungyung and it resulted in the economic depression in that area. Recently. the economic growth of Mungyung is attempted by developing the distribution center of agricultural products and the resort complex using beautiful natural environment such as the film setting of 'Taejo Wang - gun' and hot spring in good quality. In this article I survey the foreigners aware of the principle products of this district and their intention of purchasing the products using local speciality. I also make confectionery experiments on the basis of the survey and develop various confectionery using principle products of Mungyung.

  • The major source of nutrients in both the Gamagyang Bay and the Yeoja Bay is mixing. However, water discharges also seem to contribute significant quantities which may influence local phytoplankton growth. Data collected inn the study area shows that natural fluctuations in the environmental conditions of the entire area play a dominant role in determining the phytoplankton populations of the two Bays. The predominating phytoplankton forms are neritic diatom species including some dinoflagellate species in summer. Neritic groups are relatively more abundant in inner areas of the Bays. The oceanic groups and species are seasonal, and associated with advective effects. One neritic species is of overwhelming numerical importance and occurs when a specific seasonal conditions is formed. Species cycles in the two Bays may be regarded as largely the result of successional changes or cycles of autochthonous species introduced by advective processes.

  • For the maximun yield of the forest trees in the forest management, the growth of annual ring area of the major forest trees was analysed in the four areas in South Korea. The time to the maximum productivity and the optimum cutting time for the maximum yield were estimated. The growth curve of annual ring area showed sigmoid like that of other organisms. Only the growth coefficient among the areas between Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Pinus koraiensis represented significance (5% level). The growth coefficient among forest trees between Pinus densiflora and Abies holophylla, Larix kaempferi and Carpinus laxiflora, Larix kaempferi and Quercus mongolica, Larix kaempferi and Quercus serrata, Larix kaempferi and Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi and Abies holophylla represented significance (5% level). Among eight forest trees, the time to maximum productivity (tm) of Larix kaempferi was the earliest (21.4 year), and Abies holophylla was the latest (91.9 year). The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield (tc) of L. kaempferi was the earliest (29.4 year) and that of A, holophylla was the latest (122.2 year) of all communities. The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield was 1.33 times as late as the time to the maximum productivity. If the growth of annual ring area as the forest tree for wood is regarded, L. kaempferi and P. densiflora are thought to be more economical than A. holophylla and P. koraiensis.

  • This study was conducted to establish a management plan for the Sangrim Woodlands restoration by analyzing the site characteristics of the Sangrim Woodlands Natural Monument(Natural Monument 154) in Hamyang-Gun, Gyoungsangnam-Do, Korea. Site preparation to enhance soil aeration should be applied because soil bulk density in all study sites was higher than soil compaction of natural forest soil area. Herbaceous plants could be introduced to hard soil strength for restoration of areas compacted by visitors. Also, visitors around forest areas should be restricted to enhance natural soil restoration. Soil pH in the Sangrim Woodlands was between 4.18 and 4.90. The values were lower than pH 5.34 of Korean forest soil originated from metamorphic parent materials. Lime fertilizer could be applied to reduce soil acidification in the woodlands. Short and long-term management plans such as periodical fertilizations to improve plant growth should be established to restore the Sangrim Woodlands which have high soil compaction, low soil pH and organic matter content.

  • This study analyzed the impact of securing nature-friendly public spaces on the healthy growth of children. Additionally, it examined the case of Germany to extract implications for Korea. The natural environment enhances children's play, physical activity, cognitive abilities, and overall happiness. Therefore, it is generally considered a necessary space that must be provided for domestically, especially for children who experience high academic stress and low levels of happiness. However, as evidenced by Germany's "Nature Experience Area Project," creating nature-friendly spaces for children requires legal support at the national level. Additionally, such projects should be integrated with key national policies. Furthermore, beyond interdisciplinary collaboration, caregivers must have a positive perception of the natural environment.

  • Recently, new methods have been developed for estimating the current and recent changes in effective population sizes. Based on the methods, the effective population sizes of Korean populations were estimated using data from the Korean Association Resource (KARE) project. The overall changes in the population sizes of the total populations were similar to CHB (Han Chinese in Beijing, China) and JPT (Japanese in Tokyo, Japan) of the HapMap project. There were no differences in past changes in population sizes with a comparison between an urban area and a rural area. Age-dependent current and recent effective population sizes represent the modern history of Korean populations, including the effects of World War II, the Korean War, and urbanization. The oldest age group showed that the population growth of Koreans had already been substantial at least since the end of the 19th century.

  • The germinatin of e. annuus continued from the middle ofmay to mid-october. The maximum germination occurred on the mid-july. The period bloom of was distingushed amongs the different growth forms ; a orm pr of biennial and a form of pr perennial flowering from the mid-may to mid-september, and a form ps biennial blossom from the beginning of October to earlynovember. the dispersal of seed for(a form pr)occurred from early June to the mid-september. A rotte, germinating from summer to autumn, could classified into several growth forms; individuals without a critical leaf area for bolting until september and October, become a form ps of biennial, whicth did not proceed toreproductive growth unitl the next year, even thought wintering. individuals flowered on 3 years after germination become a form pr of perennial. The growth formular of aform pr of bennial, grown in a pot was w=20.2[1+$3.36{\times}10^3$(-0.062t)]$^{-1}$. The maximum relative growth rate(rgr) was 0.062g/g/day and the maximum net assimlation rate(nar) 0.089g/g/day. Therelative growth among each organ was shown as R=0.12 $T^{1.15}$between the avove-ground part(t) and the below- ground part(r). the relation between the avove-ground part(t) and the ratio of stem weight(wi) was ws/wi=2.56 $T^{0.35}$. n.p.k. was largely distributed on a leaf throughoutthe total growth period. while growing, it tended to decrease on the vegetative organ gut vice versa on the reproductive organ. however, nitrogen was more widely distributed on a leaf then in the reproductive organ.
