  • A variety of bioactive secondary metabolites have been reported from plant-associated microorganisms. Halophytes, plants that can only grow in hypersaline area, were reported to host beneficial microorganisms such as plant growth-promoting endophytes. The microorganisms have been reported to show notable mutualistic symbiosis with halophytes to help them survive in high saline condition. Finding out bioactive secondary metabolites as well as elucidation of relationship(s) between microbes and the host halophyte has been paid attention, because of their functional diversity. Novel microbes often have associated with novel natural products. In an effort to investigate natural compounds with interesting structures from fungi, we selected plants from a distinct environmental setting which could be a promising source. Several fungi were isolated from halophyte or medicinal plants. Some strains of the fungi were cultivated on a large scale and extracted with ethyl acetate, which were subjected to a series of chromatographic methods, leading to the isolation of tens of compounds. The isolated compounds were identified by analysis of spectroscopic methods such as 1D-, 2D-NMR, and MS. Details of isolation, structure determination, and biological activities will be discussed.

  • To find out the effect of the vegetation recovery and the problems of forest land, the researches of the mortality in pine stand and vegetation recovery have been carried out from the burned site. In area which is damaged by fire scar on crown and stem, rate of dead is higher. Where stand growing stocks were totally damaged by crown forest fire, most of vegetation was recovered by sprouts and planted seeds. Vegetation recovery power were depending on the condition of soil depth condition. For the artificial recovery, the damage happened by insects in the planted birches plantation. Rate of growth was somewhat different between Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii in the plantation, because of individual growth rate.

  • In this paper we have introduced some results of study on stand growth pattern and stand structure of larch forest which are located in selected forest sites of Khangai and Gobi-Altai mountain ranges of Mongolia. Our investigations showed that growth intensity and stand structure in western Mongolia are very specific from the other forest vegetation zones of Mongolia. Studies on the stand structure and growth trend indicate that tree types of stand structure and different types of growth of Larix sibrica are very common in Western Mongolia. These peculiarities of stand structure and growth of larch stands in Western Monolia could be used for inventory work and an improvement of the forest management in Western Mongolian region. The larch tree is the dominant tree species in Western Mogolia. Forest cover of the region is about 15%, which is two times higher than the country's average. In this region forest area is divided into 4 forest sub-regions: the Central Khangai, Western Khangai, North Eastern Khangai and South Easterun Khangai sub-regions including taiga, pseudo taiga, sub taiga, sub-alpine and forest steppe belts. Silviculture practices and forest research management request to study forest growth trends in local and general conditions, which means to indicate a change of taxonomic characteristics of stand from time to time including diameter, height, basal area, growth stock etc. The forest management practice mostly uses tables of forest growth and yield based on the results of long term research on forest growth. Forest yield tables and other relevant forest standards of Russia are used for the forest inventory and forest management. They are not able to determine forest structure and growth peculiatities of Mongolian forests. Studies on forest resource assessment in Mongolia indicate that after logging operations and forest fires the natural regeneration of desired species such as pine and larch often does not succeed. This situation forces to take a different approach of forest management and silviculture practice depending on the stand structure and growth rate of the forest stands. According to our investigation in last years, forest growth pattern of larch forest depends mostly on stand structure, stand age and growth condition including forest soil, climate and location in different slopes. Due to improve environmental function of forest ecosystem in the region, it is needed to conduct very comprehensive study of high mountain forest ecosystem in selected sub-regions.

  • Background: Climate change has altered the various ecosystem processes including forest ecosystem in Himalayan region. Although the high mountain natural forests including treelines in the Himalayan region are mainly reported to be temperature sensitive, the temperature-related water stress in an important growth-limiting factor for middle elevation mountains. And there are very few evidences on growth performance of planted forest in changing climate in the Himalayan region. A dendrochronological study was carried out to verify and record the impact of warming temperature tree growth by using the tree cores of Pinus roxburghii from Batase village of Dhulikhel in Central Nepal with sub-tropical climatic zone. For this total, 29 tree cores from 25 trees of P. roxburghii were measured and analyzed. Result: A 44-year long tree ring width chronology was constructed from the cores. The result showed that the radial growth of P. roxburghii was positively correlated with pre-monsoon (April) rainfall, although the correlation was not significant and negatively correlated with summer rainfall. The strongest negative correlation was found between radial growth and rainfall of June followed by the rainfall of January. Also, the radial growth showed significant positive correlation with that previous year August mean temperature and maximum temperature, and significant negative correlation between radial growth and maximum temperature (Tmax) of May and of spring season (March-May), indicating moisture as the key factor for radial growth. Despite the overall positive trend in the basal area increment (BAI), we have found the abrupt decline between 1995 and 2005 AD. Conclusion: The results indicated that chir pine planted population was moisture sensitive, and the negative impact of higher temperature during early growth season (March-May) was clearly seen on the radial growth. We emphasize that the forest would experience further moisture stress if the trend of warming temperatures continues. The unusual decreasing BAI trend might be associated with forest management processes including resin collection and other disturbances. Our results showed that the planted pine forest stand is sub-healthy due to major human intervention at times. Further exploration of growth climate response from different climatic zones and management regimes is important to improve our understanding on the growth performance of mid-hill pine forests in Nepal.

  • Evaluating the temporal and spatial changes in the ecosystem service value (ESV) of the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve is important for understanding the impact of human activities on natural ecosystem and guiding ecosystem restoration and environmental pollution control. In this study, remotely sensed land-cover data and the equivalent factor method were used to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the ESV in Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve from 1992 to 2015, and regression analysis was employed to determine the factors driving changes in the ESV. The results show that grassland was the main type of ecosystem in the study area, and the transformation of grassland into bare areas was the primary change in land cover. Additionally, the ESV in the study area first decreased and then increased, with an annual growth rate of 0.69%. The ESV mainly increased in the north of the Yellow River's source area, and mainly decreased in the northwest of the Yangtze River's source area. Finally, the gross output value of agriculture, urbanization rate and proportion of secondary industry were found to be the main factors driving the ESV in the study area.

  • Sea cucumbers have been an important part of human diets throughout history; demand is increasing every year, making the species a target for coastal resource development. New harvesting technologies have been developed in response to demand, including nursery production and insemination aquaculture, but such methods produce relatively few individuals and productivity per unit area is very small. For example, captures are prohibited during July and August due to the breeding season, and sea cucumbers aestivate during the hot season and hibernate during the cold season, all factors that limit natural-environment production in Korea. Problems with slow growth of sea cucumbers have been encountered in previous rearing experiments. To assess the importance of feeding ecology on sea cucumber growth, we conducted pond-bottom and lantern-net culture experiments. Results showed that sea cucumbers in bottom cultures grew from 3.06 to 102.59 g, but those in lantern cultures only grew from 25.60 to 28.03 g.

  • Fertilized eggs of Plecoglossus altivelis over than 1,000,000 were introduced into Okjeong, Jeollabuk-do, Korea by K-water, 2001. Since then, this lake and the neighbouring tributaries gave sufficient habitat to maintain their life cycle which are being the land-locked. A land-locked ayu of annual life is ascending and descending from Lake Okjeong to streams for spawning and growth. Among the streams, the Churyeong stream reaching about 32 km in length is a major site for growth and spawning. But the land-locked ayu was no longer seen in the upper regions of the Churyeong stream over than about 12 km distance from Lake Okjeong. Because there were 11 weirs along with the Churyeong stream, it was difficult for them to move freely up to upper regions, and it causes irregular growth condition although they must be actively growing with feeding for spawning. During three survey years (2004 to 2006), in lowest rainfall-recorded 2005, the ayu population was not able to move up actively across the weirs and just stayed around the weirs, and finally it let them grow slowly and unstably. Also although there are 11 weirs, only 3 fish ways existed. Such environmental factors will seriously affect growth, spawning and size of ayu population in this area.

  • We investigated the variation in adaptation to growth for four ecotypically-differentiated population of Taraxacum officinale found naturally in temporal environmental heterogeneity. Seeds collected from the four seasons were germinated in incubators and were grown for four months in greenhouse to test genetic variation among biotypes. Biotypes, segregated by seeds collected seasonally, were the part of natural population in Mokpo, South Korea. Each biotype was different in total dry weight of seeds, biomass, and leaf area, confirming previous finding. Differences between biotypes grown under a common environment indicated a genetic basis to their distinct demographic rates. Therefore, biotypes with similar annual rates of growth and contrasting seasonal rates should persist in the population. This differential response suggests that temporal variation in environment may be responsible, in part, for the maintenance of genetic variation within populations.

  • The floristic composition and structure of the Oriental Arbor-viate forest, natural monument no. 1, were investigated in the Daegu city, southeastern Korea. Vegetation stratification have four layers including tree (>5m), subtree (2m-5m), shrub (1m-2m) and herbs (<1m), which occupied 63.8%, 10.7%, 12.1% and 49.4%, respectively. The vegetation of the study area were divided into Artemisia keiskeana - Quercus variabilis and Pyrrosia linearifolia-Thuja orientalis (OAV) communities. Frequency distribution for diameter classes of the Oriental Arbor-vitae population showed a reverse-J shape. The result suggests that the OAV forest of this site might maintains continuously the present state. The annual radial growth of OAV, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis, the dominant species of the present site showed 0.29, 1.01 and 1.28 mm/year, respectively. Competition of OAV with theh other species including P. densiflora and Q. variabilis could influence negatively on the growthand survival of OAV forest in this site.

  • Optimal conditions for the seed germination and growth of Hedyotis diffusa were studied. As photoperiod was increased from 12 hr to 24hr, the germination rate of Hedyotis diffusa was gradually increased. The photoperiod and temperature inflenced on the fermination synergistically. After the growth of 20 weeks under the natural condition (June~Oct.), the length of H. diffusa was $38.9{\pm}4.2cm$ (15.5~52.5cm), and total dry weight per $3.3m^2$ was $316.7{\pm}10.3g$. It is considered that H. diffusa could be cultivated in a part of inland. The anticancer effect of H. diffusa extract was examined. F-344 rats aged 6 weeks were divided into 3 groups and were given an I.P. of diethylnitrosamine at 200mg/kg body weight as a promoter, initially. And in two weeks after the beginnign of the experiment, group 1 was supplied iwth feed containing 0.02% 2-AAG as a promoter for 6 weeks. Group 2 was supplied with feed containing extracts of H.diffusa (0.02%) for two weeks. Group3 was supplied with only basal diet. All rats were sacrificed for partial hepatectomu, and the antipromoting effect was examined by the number 문 area per $cm^2$ of foci in river. In group 1, the number of hyperplastic nodule was $18.5{\pm}7.7$, but in group2, it was drastically reduced to $10.3{\pm}1.8$ rather thn those of group1. The total area of nodules $(mm^2)$ /whole liver $(cm^2)$ of group 1 and group2 were $19.2{\pm}7.7$ and $5.0{\pm}3.2$, respectively. These results indicate that extract of H.diffusa act as an anticancer agent at statistically significant level (p<0.001).
