  • It is generally known that the lateral frequency( ω) of the vibration of a prismatic beam-column decreases according to the rele (equation omitted) (ω/sub 0/=natural frequency). In the cases of tapered members, the determination of P/ sub/ cr/(elastic critical load) and ω/ sub 0/ are not easy. Furthermore, the relationship between the compressive load and frequency can not be determined by the conventional analytical method. The axial force-frequency relationship of sinusolidally non-symmetrically tapered members with different shapes were investigated using the finite element method. To obtain the two eigenvalues, the axial thrust was increased step by step and the corresponding frequency was calculated. The result indicated that the axial thrust of the elastic critical load ratio and the square of the frequency ratio can be approximately represented in any case by a straight line. Finally, the linear relationship is also applicable to the sinusolidally non-symmetrically tapered member.

  • The steady state response of a torsionally coupled system with tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to external wind-induced harmonic excitation is presented. The torsionally coupled system is considered as one-way eccentric system. The eccentricity considered in the system is accidental eccentricity only. The performance of single tuned mass damper (TMD) optimally designed without considering the torsion is investigated for the torsionally coupled system and found that the effectiveness of a single TMD is significantly reduced due to torsion in the system. However, the design of TMD system without considering the torsion is only justified for torsionally stiff systems. Further, the optimum parameters of a single TMD considering the accidental eccentricity are obtained using numerical searching technique for different values of uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency ratio and aspect ratio of the system. The optimally designed single TMD system is found to be less effective for torsionally coupled system in comparison to uncoupled system. This is due to the fact that a torsionally coupled system has two natural frequencies of vibration, as a result, at least two TMDs are required which can control both lateral and torsional response of the system. The optimum damper parameters of different alternate arrangements such as (i) two identical TMDs placed at opposite corners, (ii) two independent TMDs and (iii) four TMDs are evaluated for minimum response of the system. The comparative performance of the above TMDs arrangements is also studied for both torsionally coupled and uncoupled systems. It is found that four TMDs arrangement is quite effective solution for vibration control of torsionally coupled system.

  • Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been installed in many high-rise buildings, to improve their resiliency under dynamic loads. However, high-rise buildings may experience natural frequency changes under ambient temperature fluctuations, extreme wind loads and relative humidity variations. This makes the design of a TMD challenging and may lead to a detuned scenario, which can reduce significantly the performance. To alleviate this problem, the current paper presents a proposed approach for the design of a robust and efficient TMD. The approach accounts for the uncertain natural frequency, the optimization objective and the input excitation. The study shows that robust design parameters can be different from the optimal parameters. Nevertheless, predetermined optimal parameters are useful to attain design robustness. A case study of a high-rise building is executed. The TMD designed with the proposed approach showed its robustness and effectiveness in reducing the responses of high-rise buildings under multidirectional wind. The case study represents an engineered design that is instructive. The results show that shear buildings may be controlled with less effort than cantilever buildings. Structural control performance in high-rise buildings may depend on the shape of the building, hence the flow patterns, as well as the wind direction angle. To further increase the performance of the robust TMD in one lateral direction, active control using LQG and fuzzy logic controllers was carried out. The performance of the controllers is remarkable in enhancing the response reduction. In addition, the fuzzy logic controller may be more robust than the LQG controller.

  • In this paper, we studied about the dynamic behavior of a cracked rotating cantilever beam. The influences of a rotating angular velocity, the crack depth and the crack position on the dynamic behavior of a cracked cantilever beam have been studied by the numerical method. The cracked cantilever beam is modeled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The lateral tip displacement and the axial tip deflection of a rotating cantilever beam is more sensitive to the rotating angular velocity than the depth and position of crack. Totally, as the crack depth is increased, the natural frequency of a rotating cantilever beam is decreased in the first and second mode of vibration.

  • Dynamic behavior of piezoelectric ZnO nanowires is investigated using finite element analyses (FEA) on FE models constructed based on previous experimental observations in which nanowires having aspect ratios of 1:2. 1:31, and 1:57 are obtained during a hydrothermal process. Modal analyses predict that nanowires will vibrate in lateral bending, uniaxial elongation/contraction, and twisting (torsion), respectively, for the three ratios. The natural frequency for each vibration mode varies depending on the aspect ratio, while the frequencies are in a range of 7.233 MHz to 3.393 GHz. Subsequent transient response analysis predicts that the nanowires will behave quasi-statically within the load frequency range below 10 MHz, implying that the ZnO nanowires have application potentials as structural members of electromechanical systems including nano piezoelectric generators and piezoelectric dynamic strain sensors. When an electric pulse signal is simulated, it is predicted that the nanowires will deform in accordance with the electric signal. Once the electric signal is removed, the nanowires exhibit a specific resonance-like vibration, with the frequency synchronized to the signal frequency. These predictions indicate that the nanowires have additional application potential as piezoelectric actuators and resonators.

The equation of motion is derived by using the Lagrange's equation. The cracked cantilever beam is modeled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The lateral tip-displacement and the axial tip-deflection of a rotating cantilever beam is more sensitive to the rotating angular velocity than the depth and position of crack. When the crack depth is constant, the natural frequencies of a rotating cantilever beam are proportional to the rotating angular velocity in the each direction.

  • The frequency of a traditional tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) depends solely on the length of liquid column, which imposes certain restrictions on its application to long span cable-stayed bridges during construction. The configuration of a cable-stayed bridge varies from different construction stages and so do its natural frequencies. It is thus difficult to apply TLCD with a fixed configuration to the bridge during construction or it is not economical to design a series of TLCD with different liquid lengths to suit for various construction stages. Semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD) with adaptive frequency tuning capacity is studied in this paper for buffeting response control of a long span cable-stayed bridge during construction. The frequency of SATLCD can be adjusted by active control of air pressures inside the air chamber at the two ends of the container. The performance of SATLCD for suppressing combined lateral and torsional vibration of a real long span cable-stayed bridge during construction stage is numerically investigated using a finite element-based approach. The finite element model of SATLCD is also developed and incorporated into the finite element model of the bridge for predicting buffeting response of the coupled SATLCD-bridge system in the time domain. The investigations show that with a fixed container configuration, the SATLCD with adaptive frequency tuning can effectively reduce buffeting response of the bridge during various construction stages.

  • Dynamic response of a three span continuous bridge has been determined by full scale experiments on the bridge. In the experiments, a heavy vehicle was driven across the bridge at different speeds and along different lanes of travel and the strains were recorded at different locations. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and was asymmetric in plan and in elevation. Frequencies and modes of vibration excited by the vehicle were determined. The dependence of the dynamic amplification on bridge location and vehicle speed was investigated and dynamic amplifications up to 1.5 were recorded, which was higher than values predicted by bridge design codes. It was evident that when this asymmetric bridge was loaded by an asymmetric forcing function, higher modes, which are lateral and/or torsional in nature, were excited. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and the support stiffness influenced the natural frequencies of the bridge, which in turn influenced the dynamic amplifications. Larger than anticipated dynamic amplification factors and the excitation of lateral and/or torsional modes should be of interest and concern to bridge engineers.

  • A general solution method is presented to obtain the unbalance response orbit from the finite element based equations of motion of a gear-coupled two-shaft rotor-bearing system. Particularly, are proposed the analytical solutions of major and minor axis radii of the orbit. The method has been applied to analyze the unbalance response of a 800 refrigeration-ton turbo-chiller rotor-bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. The bumps of unbalance responses have been observed at the first torsional natural frequency due to the coupling of lateral and torsional dynamics by the gear meshing. Further, the proposed analytical solutions have been validated with results obtained by a full numerical approach.
