Natural ventilation technique could be the substitute for or the complement to the local exhaust ventilation system in the sense of protecting work environment. Moreover, it has many strong points ; almost no mechanical parts, no energy use and no noise. If applied appropriately, it could have the very high ventilation rate and save a lot of energy expense. But, it depends on the outdoor environment, especially temperature and wind speed/direction. Predicting the capacity of natural ventilation is not an easy job because it comes from both buoyancy and wind effect. Another problem is too much flow through the ventilator especially in winter time due to too much difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. Thus some ventilators in industries are sealed by door or plastic sheet, resulting in bad work environment. Various types of dampers are used to control the flow rate through ventilators. The capabilities of flow control by damper has not been estimated. In addition, it was not tested whether the damper could obstruct the flow through ventilator when fully opened. To answer these questions, 4 types of dampers were tested by using computational fluid dynamics. 10 different configurations includes no damper, full open and half open. Flow rates were estimated and airflow fields were analysed to clarify the before-mentioned questions. The dual type damper was the best choice for controling the capability of ventilator. In addition, the upward grill type damper was the best for not obstructing the air flow when fully opened.

The sonic nozzle is widely used as reference device for calibrating flowmeters In gas flow measurement and its use requires the Critical Flow Factor(CFF) based on the thermodynamic properties of the gas at the nozzle throat. ISO-9300 provides the calculating method of the factor. But since the CFF from this method show an error over ${\pm}0.5%$ In specific conditions and of ${\pm}0.1{\sim}{\pm}0.2%$ in common Natural Gas(NG) custody transfer condition. this method cannot be applied for gas flow measurement with sonic nozzle. Each research bodies or organizations of the world have joined in order to calculate the CFF more accurately. They have performed these works using their own method and compared the results with each other under the management of ISO. KOGAS have joined those works, because the high-pressure natural gas flow calibration facility of KOGAS will be constructed in late 1999, and then had necessities to calculate a CFF accurately. The calculation method of KOGAS was using the equation of state from AGA-8('94), high accuracy model of ideal gas properties and the solutions of thermodynamic equations. The evaluation results have had a very good consistency within ${\pm}0.05%$ in most NO custody transfer conditions compared to the speed of sound for methane and also shown that the CFF was within ${\pm}0.1%$ compared to the results of other works of the world.

Natural circulation systems (NCSs) are extensively applied in nuclear power plants because of their simplicity and inherent safety features. For some passive natural circulation systems in floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), the ocean is commonly used as the heat sink. Condensation induced water hammer (CIWH) events may appear as the steam directly contacts the subcooled seawater, which seriously threatens the safe operation and integrity of the NCSs. Nevertheless, the research on the formation mechanisms of CIWH is insufficient, especially in NCSs. In this paper, the characteristics of flow rate and fluid temperature are emphatically analyzed. Then the formation types of CIWH are identified by visualization method. The experimental results reveal that due to the different size and formation periods of steam slugs, the flow rate presents continuous and irregular oscillation. The fluid in the horizontal hot pipe section near the water tank is always subcooled due to the reverse flow phenomenon. Moreover, the transition from stratified flow to slug flow can cause CIWH and enhance flow instability. Three types of formation mechanisms of CIWH, including the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, the interaction of solitary wave and interface wave, and the pressure wave induced by CIWH, are obtained by identifying 67 CIWH events.

The problem of the onset stability in an inclined layer of dielectric viscoelastic fluid (Walter's liquid B') is studied. The analysis is made under the simultaneous action of a normal a.c. electric field and the natural convection flow due to uniformly distributed internal heat sources. The power series method used to obtain the eigen value equation which is then solved numerically to obtain the stable and unstable solutions. Numerical results are given and illustrated graphically.
The current study was performed to observe the effect of Sun Ginseng (SG) on hemodynamics such as blood flow rate (BF), blood flow velocity (BV), heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and body temperature (BT) in healthy young men. This is a randomized, single-blind study observed during 6 hrs after orally single administration of SG. (omitted)
A model has been developed to predict natural ventilation in a single zone building with large openings. This study first presents pressure-based equations on natural ventilation, that include the combined effect of wind and thermal buoyancy. Moreover, the concept of neutral pressure level(NPL) is introduced to consider the two-way flow through a large opening. The total pressure differences across the opening and the NPL are calculated, and nonlinear equations are solved to find the zonal pressure to satisfy mass conservation. For this analysis, an iterative technique of successively approximating the zonal pressure is used. The results of applying this study model to several simple cases are as follows. When there is no wind and only the stack effect is caused, a one-way flow occurs in both the top and bottom openings in the case of two openings of equal-area, and a one-way flow occurs in the top opening; however, a two-way flow occurs in the bottom opening in the case of two openings of unequal-area. When there is a wind effect, regardless of whether the outside air temperature is lower or higher than the indoor air temperature, air flows into the room through the bottom opening and out of the room through the top opening. As the wind velocity increases, the wind effect appears to be more influential than the stack effect owing to the temperature difference.
The flow of cooling water in a passive containment cooling system (PCCS), used to remove heat released in design basis accidents from a concrete containment of light water nuclear power plant, was conducted in order to investigate the thermo-fluid equilibrium among many parallel tubes of PCCS. Numerical simulations of the subcooled boiling flow within a coolant loop of a PCCS, which will be installed in innovative pressurized-water reactor (PWR), were conducted using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the RPI model were used for turbulence closure and subcooled flow boiling, respectively. As the first step, the simplified geometry of PCCS with 36 tubes was modeled in order to reduce computational resource. Even and uneven thermal loading conditions were applied at the outer walls of parallel tubes for the simulation of the coolant flow in the PCCS at the initial phase of accident. It was observed that the natural circulation maintained in single-phase for all even and uneven thermal loading cases. For uneven thermal loading cases, coolant velocity in each tube were increased according to the applied heat flux. However, the flows were mixed well in the header and natural circulation of the whole cooling loop was not affected by uneven thermal loading significantly.
A comparative study on the treatment of the turbulent heat flux with the elliptic blending second-moment closure for a natural convection flow is performed. Three cases of different treating the turbulent heat flux are considered. Those are the generalized gradient diffusion hypothesis (GGDH), the algebraic flux model (AFM) and the differential flux model (DFM). The constants in the models are adjusted with a primary emphasis placed on the accuracy of predicting the local Nusselt number. These models are implemented in a computer code specially designed for evaluation of turbulent models. Calculations are performed for a turbulent natural convection in the 1:5 rectangular cavity and the calculated results are compared with the available experimental data. The results show that the three models produce nearly the same accuracy of solutions. These results show that the GGDH, AFM and DFM models for treating the turbulent heat flux are sufficient for this simple shear flow where the shear production is dominant. It is observed that, in the weakly stratified region at the center zone of the cavity, the vertical velocity fluctuation is nearly zero in the GGDH solutions, which shows that the GGDH model may not be suitable for the strongly stratified flow. Thus, further study on the strongly stratified flow should be followed.
When heat generated inside a large factory building is not discharged due to a stagnant flow, the working environment of workers becomes worse and the cooling of high-temperature products such as hot-rolling coils is delayed. To investigate the natural ventilation inside a large factory building, experimental studies were carried out using wind-tunnel tests. The scale-down factory building models were placed in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the mean and fluctuating velocity fields were measured using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. For the prototype factory model, the outdoor air is only entrained into the factory building through the one-third open windward wall, and stagnant flow is formed in the rear part of the target area. In order to improve the indoor ventilation environment of the factory building, three different louver-type ventilators were attached at the upper one-third open windward wall of the factory model. Among the three louver ventilators tested in this study, the ventilator model #3 with the outer louver (${\theta}_o$ = 90$^{\circ}$) and the inner louver (${\theta}_i$ = -70$^{\circ}$) was found to improve the natural ventilation inside the factory building model effectively. The flow rate of the entrained air was increased with aligning the outer louver blades with the oncoming wind and guiding the entrained air down to the ground surface with elongated inner louver blades.
Coolant mixing under natural circulation flow regime constitutes a key parameter that may play a role in the course of an accidental transient in a nuclear pressurized water reactor. This issue has motivated some experimental investigations carried out within the OECD/NEA PKL projects. The aim was to assess the coolant mixing phenomenon in the reactor pressure vessel downcomer and the core lower plenum under several asymmetric steady and unsteady flow conditions, and to provide experimental data for code validations. Former studies addressed the mixing phenomenon using, on the one hand, one-dimensional computational approaches with cross flows that are not fully validated under transient conditions and, on the other hand, expensive computational fluid dynamic tools that are not always justified for large-scale macroscopic phenomena. In the current framework, an unsteady coolant mixing experiment carried out in the Rossendorf coolant mixing test facility is simulated using the three-dimensional porous media capabilities of the thermal-hydraulic system CATHARE code. The current study allows highlighting the current capabilities of these codes and their suitability for reproducing the main phenomena occurring during asymmetric transient natural circulation mixing conditions.
