Due to global warming and abnormal climate, the incidence and scale of green tracts in rivers and water intake dam are increasing every year. Therefore, in this study, developed eco friendly positively charged Torrefied Wood Flour(TWF) coagulant by reusing wood damaged by blight as a natural material. In order to evaluate the effect of coagulant on water ecosystem, green algae contaminated water was collected and TOC showed high removal rate of 86% ~ 92% under 1% and 5% TWF C-PAM treatment condition. The $NH_3-N$ showed 53% removal efficiency. The average pH of the polluted water was 7.9 in the case of hydrogen ion concentration, and the pH of the treated water was in the range of 6.5 ~ 7.7, It was found to be suitable for water quality standards. In ecotoxicity tests, all the results of the experiment showed that both the number of green algae and that of treated water were not affected by the survival of the daphnia. Therefore, as a result of the analyzing, developed paste type TWF coagulants is considered to be able to remove algae using natural resources.
In this study, efficiency of pre-treatment of turbid seawater was measured where micro-air bubbles were used to remove particles in seawater after input of natural coagulant PGA. Artificial seawater was prepared having the intended trubidity using marine sediments and microalgae. 73.7% of turbidity removal was achieved when 0.5g/L of $AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ was added in the artificial seawater, but 92.4% of turbidity removal was observed when 0.05g/L of PGA was added in the artificial seawater containing microalgae. In addition, much greater turbidity removal was achieved for microalage than sediments. For both cases, input of 0.1g/L PGA and following additional input of micro-air bubbles for 5 seconds resulted in the maximum removal efficiency where reaction time of coagulation was 1 min and flotation by micro-air bubbles was 10 min. From this study, we concluded that micro-air floation after coagulation could be a possible economical pre-treatment method for highly turbid seawater.
This study was conducted to remove the dyes in dye wastewater by the chemical precipitation or biological treatment which are one of the main pollutants in dye wastewater. In order to remove the disperse dyes effectively in aqueous solution by chemical precipitation process, coagulation and flocculation tests were carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferrous sulfate was the most effective coagulant for the removal of disperse dye(DB79), and we could get the best result for the removal of disperse dye(DB56) in the aspects of TOC removal efficiency and sludge yield. When the Ferrous sulfate dosage was 800mg/l, the sludge settling velocity was very fast$(SV_{30}=4\%)$, and the color was effectively removed in the disperse dye(DB79) solution. Although the color removal was ineffective when the Alum was used as a coagulant, the sludge yield decreased in comparison with the Ferrous sulfate or the Ferric sulfate being used in the disperse dye(DB56) solution. In order to decolorize disperse dye(DR17) by using biological treatment process, a strain which has potential ability to degrade disperse dyes was isolated from natural system. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were found to be $40^{\circ}C\;and\;8.5\~9$, respectively. When yeast extract was mixed with polypeptone at the mixing ratio of 1:1 as a nitrogen source, decolorization efficiency was highest$(93\%)$ among the nitrogen sources. The strain screened was excellent to adjust to pH, and it seems to have ability to control pH needed to growth. The optimal culture conditions in concentration of $MgSO_{4.}\cdot7H_2O\;and\;KH_2PO_4$ were $0.1\%(w/v)\;and\;0.2\%(w/v)$, respectively. Strains degrading and decolorizing reactive dyes, RB198 and RR141 which were isolated from water system, are named RBK1 and RRK. And the cell growth characteristics of RBK1 and RRK were investigated. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were found to be 30t' and 7.0, respectively. Optimum nitrogen source was peptone, and it was found that decolorization efficiencies by strains RBK1 and RRK, were $85\%\;and\;62\%$, respectively, with introduction of 4,000mg/l of peptone. In the case of RBK1, color removal efficiencies were very high below 400mg/l. Decolorization efficiency was over $90\%$ at 20hours of culture time. The Color degradation ability of RRK was lower than that of RBK1.

This study investigated removal of radionuclides (Cs, Sr) in surface water by coagulation and precipitation. Jar tests were conducted with various chemical and natural coagulants to remove the stabilized radionuclides ($^{133}Cs$, $^{88}Sr$). Chemical coagulants included aluminum sulfate, poly aluminum chloride, and poly aluminum hydroxide chloride silicate (PACS); natural coagulants (minerals) included illite and zeolite. Chemical coagulant alone could achieve removals of Cs and Sr less than 10%; The removals increased up to 23.1% for Cs and 17.8% for Sr with addition of poly-dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) along with the chemical coagulants. Compared with chemical coagulants, natural coagulants (minerals) could achieve higher removals of Cs and Sr. Addition of zeolite along with PACS and polyDADMAC increased the removal rates up to 36.9% for Cs and 17.1% for Sr.

This study investigated removal characteristic of soluble Cs in water by RPT (Radioactivity pollutant treatment) with coagulation and sedimentation. The RPT conducted with various chemical and natural coagulants to remove the soluble Cs which consisted pre-adsorption, Sedimentation and post-adsorption. Natural absorbent included Illite and zeolite. Especially, Illite divided LPI (Large Particle Illite) and SPI (Small Particle Illite) by grain size. Also, Chemical coagulants included high basicity PAC (poly aluminum chloride). The adsorbent had a plate structure mainly composed of quartz, albite and muscovite. The surface area were $4.201m^2/g$ and $4.227m^2/g$ and the particle sizes were $197.4-840.9{\mu}m$ and $3.28-53.57{\mu}m$, respectively. The adsorption efficiency of the natural Illite was 82.8% for LPI and 85.6% for SPI. The removal efficiency of turbidity, which was an indirect indicator of adsorbent recovery, was 96.4% and 98.3%, respectively.

In this research, we synthesized potassium ferrate(VI) acting as an oxidant, disinfectant, and coagulant, and used it to treat natural organic matter(NOM, HA and FA) in river water. The removal efficiencies obtained by $UV_{254}$ ranged from 20.7 to 73.6% for 10 mg/L HA and from 52.6 to 77.5% for 10 mg/L FA in Nakdong river sample as the ferrate dose varied from 2 to 46 mg/L(as Fe). However, the removal efficiencies by TOC analysis ranged from 0 to 20.3% for HA and from 0 to 26.6% for FA at the same ferrate doses. The removal efficiencies of NOM increased either with decreasing pH or with increasing temperature. The removal efficiency of HA by ferrate was comparable to those by traditional coagulants such as $Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}18H_2O$, $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, and FeO(OH). The reaction between ferrate and HA reached a steady state within 60 seconds, showing first-order with respect to the reaction time. The removal efficiencies of HA by traditional coagulants were improved by pretreatment of HA using a small amount of ferrate.
While the existing sewage treatment facilities are mainly being operated by biological processes, winter-time efficiency improvement and additional phosphorus treatment equipment using chemicals have been required to follow the effluent criteria of TP (0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mg/L for the zone of I, II and III respectively) and $BOD_5$ (5.0 mg/L) which is intensified from 2012 in Republic of Korea. We made an investigation into actual condition of biological treatment process and calculated the optimal chemical input amount by jar test of supernatant of secondary sedimentation tank to evaluate the process improvement for the intensified criteria. Ejector BAF system for removing TP, $BOD_5$ of sewage effluent was suggested. The concentration of TP from biological process is 0.3-0.8 mg/L, and the input amount of optimal chemical coagulant was above Al/P ratio of 3(1.9 mg/L as Al) to meet the criteria of TP for secondary treatment effluent. From the results of this experiment, the best Al/P ratio for Ejector BAF system was about Al/P ratio of 1, and LV of BAF process for intensified criteria of $BOD_5$ and TP was below 1.97m/hr.
Effects of alum dosage on the particle growth were investigated by monitoring particle counts in a rapid mixing process. Kaolin was used for turbid water sample and several other chemicals were added to adjust pH and ionic strength. The range of velocity gradient and mixing time applied for rapid mixing were $200{\sim}300sec^{-1}$ and 30~180 sec, respectively. Particle distribution in the synthetic water sample was close to the natural water where their turbidity was same. The number of particles in the range of $10.0{\sim}12.0{\mu}m$ increased rapidly with rapid mixing time at alum dose of 20mg/L, however, the number of $8.0{\sim}9.0{\mu}m$ particles increased at alum dose of 50mg/L. The number of $14.0{\sim}25.0{\mu}m$ particles at alum dose of 20mg/L was 10 times higher than them at alum dose of 50mg/L. Dominant particle growth was monitored at the lower alum dose than the optimum dose from a jar test at an extended rapid mixing time(about 120 sec). The number of $8.0{\sim}14.0{\mu}m$ particles was lower both at a higher alum doses and higher G values. At G value of $200sec^{-1}$ and at alum dose of 10-20mg/L, residual turbidity was lower as the mixing time increased. But at alum dose above 40mg/L and at same G value, lower residual turbidity occurred in a short rapid mixing time. Low residual turbidity at G value of $300sec^{-1}$ occurred both at lower alum doses and at shorter mixing time comparing to the results at G value of $200sec^{-1}$.
Since sediment in a stable state is disturbed during the process from sediment in a natural state to dredged soil, the turbidity of water is not good. When the dredged soil settles again, the volume change in the sediment occurs. Coagulant and flocculant are added for turbidity mitigation of the water and faster settling process of suspended solid, and the amount of the substances affects the characteristics of the dredged soil. This study is to investigate the characteristics of the dredged soil depending on the amount of three chemical products added to the wet dredged soil and the dry dredged soil through measuring the suspended solids (SS), volume change and sedimentation velocity. The experimental measurements show that the SS decreased, the volume change rate increased, and the sedimentation velocity increased, as the chemical amount increased. In addition, it was found that the dry dredged soil reacted even with little quantity of the chemicals because derelict and microorganism are removed due to the drying process at $100{\pm}5^{\circ}C$.
Two step rapid filter system as a pre-treatment for the injected water into aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) in Korea was developed to reduce physical blockage and secure the volume of the injected water. First, single rapid sand filters with three different media sizes (0.4~0.7, 0.7~1.0 and 1.0~1.4 mm) were tested. Only two sizes (0.4~0.7 and 0.7~1.0 mm) satisfied target turbidity, below 1.0 NTU. However, they showed the fast head loss. To prevent the fast head loss and secure the volume of the injected water, a rapid anthracite filter with roughing media size (2.0~3.4 mm) were installed before a single rapid sand filter. As results, both the target turbidity and reduction of head loss were achieved. It was determined that the media size for a rapid sand filter in two step rapid filter system (i.e. a rapid anthracite filter before a rapid sand filter) was 0.7~1.0 mm. In addition, the effects of coagulant doses on the removal of natural organic matter (NOM), which might cause a biological clogging, were preliminarily evaluated, and the values of $UV_{254}$, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and SUVA were interpreted.
