In the continued research on natural fungicides for control of plant diseases by using plant-derived products, we found that Spatholobus suberectus Dunn had a strong fungicidal activity against several plant pathogens. S. suberectus (1 kg) was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH and then the concentrated extract was partitioned with n-hexane, EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$ successively. The four layers were tested their disease contron efficacies against 6 plant diseases such as rice blast (RCB), rice sheath blight (RSB), tomato grey mold (TGM), tomato late blight (TLB), wheat leaf rust (WLR), and barley powdery mildew (BPM). The EtOAc fraction was highly active showing over 80% control against RCB, TGM, TLB, and BPM. By using silica gel chromatography, preparative TLC and HPLC, six compounds that were expected to have antifungal activity were separated. Their chemical structures were identified as ethanone, hydroxytyrosol, epicatechin, procyanidin B2, dimethoxy daizein and formononetin by ESI-MS, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR, and 2D-NMR spectroscopic analyses. The chemicals except epicatechin were first reported in S. suberectus. Study on in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of the isolated compounds is in progress.
Although the bulk composition of materials is one of the major considerations in extractive metallurgy and environmental science, surface composition and topography control surface reactivity, and consequently play a major role in determining metallurgical phenomena and pollution by heavy metals and organics. An understanding of interaction mechanisms of different chemical species at the mineral surface in an aqueous media is very important in natural environment and metallurgical processing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used as an ex-situ analytical technique, but the material to be analyzed can be any size from $100\;{\mu}m$ up to about 1 cm. It can also measure mixed solids powders, but it is impossible to ascertain the original source of resulting x-ray signals where they were emitted from, since it radiates and scans the macro sample surface area. The study demonstrated the ability of TOF-SIMS to detect individual organic species on the surfaces of mineral particles from plant samples and showed that the TOF-SIMS techniques provides an excellent tool for establishing the surface compositions of mineral grains and relative concentrations of chemicals on mineral species.

Environmental estrogens are natural or synthetic substances present in the aquatic environment, especially in effluent from sewage treatment. However, the adverse effects of these estrogenic substances on fish reproduction are unknown. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is the most common phthalate, which Ps used as a plasticizer in polyvinylchloride (PVC), and it is widespread in the environment and has been found in aquatic organisms and sediments. Therefore, juvenile common carps (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to nominal concentrations of 17$\beta$-estradiol (E2) (0.5, 5, 50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) and DEHP (10, 100, 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) for 21 days, to determine the adverse reproductive effects of these compounds on plasma vitellogenin (VTG) induction, sex steroid level, and gonad weight. Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that much of VTG was induced in fish exposed to 5 and 50 E$_2$$\mu\textrm{g}$/L, but none of DEHP exposure showed induction. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) revealed that VTG was significantly induced in fish exposed to 5 and 50 E$_2$$\mu\textrm{g}$/L, and combination of 50 E$_2$$\mu\textrm{g}$/L with 10 and 500 DEHP $\mu\textrm{g}$/L, but none of DEHP exposure showed induction. Analysis of sex steroid levels in some fish revealed that testosterone (T) was detected in both male and female fish of the control and DEHP exposures, but none of fish exposed to 22 concentrations had detectable testosterone level. On the other hand, E$_2$ exposure induced 17$\beta$-estradiol in plasma of male fish, but there was no induction of 17$\beta$-estradiol in plasma of male fish exposed to DEHP. Comparison of gonadosomatic index (GSI) revealed that maximal E$_2$ exposure inhibited ovarian growth, but maximal DEHP exposure stimulated testicular growth. The results indicated that those comparisons can be a useful bio-indicator for determining adverse reproductive effect of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
Microalgae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms and abundant in every ecosystem in the biosphere. They are common in aqueous environments including marine, brackish and fresh waters and in some habitats that lack eukaryotic life such as some hot springs and highly alkaline lakes. Microalgal biotechnology that is focused on the microalgae-based production of a variety of useful materials such as pharmaceutical comfounds, health foods, natural pigments, and biofuels is considered as an important discipline with the development of biotechnology. In addition, the mass cultivation of microalgae can also contribute to improving the environmental quality by reducing the concentration of $CO_2$ which is one of major gases lead to global warming. Consequently, it seems that the microalgae can be used as an efficient, renewable, environmentally friendly source of high-value biomaterials such as chemicals, pigments, energy, etc. and the microalgal biotechnology will most likely represent a larger portion of modern biotechnology.
In order to elucidate the taste compounds of Korean catfish, Parasilurus asotus, free amino acids, nucleotides and their related compounds, organic bases, sugars, organic acids and minerals in the extracts of Korean catfish were analyzed, and then evaluated by sensory test of synthetic extract prepared on the basis of the analytical data. Taste panel assessments of synthetic extracts prepared with each extractive component omitted were carried out by a triangle difference test, and changes in taste profile were assessed. In free amino acid composition, glycine was dominant occupying $25\%$ of total free amino acids. The other abundant free amino acids were lysine, taurine and alanine. Judging from the result of analysis of nucleotides, IMP was dominant showing about $70\%$ of total nucleotides while ATP, ADP, AMP, inosine and hypoxanthine were low in content. Among organic bases, total creatinine was abundant and its nitrogen content occupied more than $50\%$ of the total extractive nitrogen. The amount of betaine was 18mg/100g and trace amount of trimethylamine and trimethylamine oxide were detected. The main organic acids were succinic, butyric, propionic and valeric acid. On the other hand, oxalic, fumaric, maleic, tartaric and citric acids were analyzed in trace. As for the sugars, glucose was found to be the most abundant monosaccharide. Extremely small amounts of fructoae, inositol were also detected and ribose and arabinose were trace in content. $K^+,\;Na^+,\;PO_{4}^{3-}$ and $Cl^-$ were found to be the major ions and small amount of $Ca^{2+}$ were defected. The synthetic extract, prepared with about 40 pure chemicals based on the analytical data satisfactorily revealed the natural taste of the original extract except slight difference in meaty taste and mildness. From the results of omission test the major components which contribute to produce the taste were serine, IMP, succinic acid and $PO_{4}^{3-}$.
The wooden armor frame and various lacquerware artifacts excavated from the low swamp remains in Imdang, Gyeongsan have very weak material and lacquer coating; in case they are exposed in the air, they are likely to be shrunken and deformed immediately. The wooden armor frame has large size and it might be dissolved during freeze-drying. The lacquer coating of lacquerware blocks the penetration of chemicals and it is very likely to swell or peel off during the treatment. Therefore, to prevent the dissolution during vacuum freeze-drying, the wooden armor frame was replaced with t-butanol and impregnated in t-butanol solution with PEG#3, 350 43%, and lacquerware was impregnated in PEG#3, 350 40% solution at room temperature and freeze-dried. According to the analysis of the lacquer fragment from the lacquerware, the lid and the mounted cup was pasted with the mixture of lacquer and black pigment (soot) on the base layer after the first coating and pasted two or three times more with natural lacquer; the red lacquered wooden cup was pasted with the mixture of lacquer and black pigment on the base layer and pasted once on the middle layer. The top lacquer (red) was pasted with the mixture of iron oxide(Fe2O3).

Soil ecological risk assessment requires terrestrial toxicity data based on trophic levels including plants, earthworms, nematodes, and springtails. To expand the trophic levels, it is needed to consider primary producer algae, nearly distributed in terrestrial environment, as representative terrestrial test species. In this study, we collected research cases focused on soil-related test species and exposure media from SCI papers, and analyzed exposure media, test species, test chemicals, and other test methods, for reviewing research trends of soil-related algal toxicity. Up to now, in the soil-related algal toxicity, test species were 8 cases (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus bijugatus, Chlorococcum infusionum, Scenedesmus subspicatus, Nostoc linckia, Synechococcus elongatus, and Chlorococcum sp.) and endpoints were cell count or photosynthetic pigment content. Also, 5 of exposure media were liquid medium, soil extracts, porewater, agar medium, and soil. Most of papers used algae isolated from natural soils or soil extracts. There were only one case for assessing algal toxicity in soil medium. More researches regarding algal toxicity in soil environments need to be conducted consistently.
Rubber chemicals such as accelerators, antidegradants, vulcanizing agents, processing agents and retarders are very important to the production and protection of tires and rubber goods. The use of accelerators and antidegradants are evaluated in various tire components. This paper will focus on how to vulcanize tires economically and maintain the physical properties of each tire component without severe degradation due to oxygen, heat and ozone. Also, new non-nitrosoamine accelerators and non-staining antiozonants will be discussed. Lastly, the future requirements of antidegradants and accelerators in the tire industry will be reviewed. Tires have been vulcanized with Sulfenamides as primary accelerators and either Guamdine's or Thiurams as secondary accelerators to achieve proper properties at service conditions. However, interior components such as the carcass can be vulcanized with Thiazoles as a primary accelerator to cure faster than the external components. Using the combination of Sulfenamide with secondary accelerators in a tire tread compound and the combination of a Thiazole and Guanidine in a carcass compound will be presented with performance data. Uniroyal Chemical and another Rubber Chemical Manufacturer have developed, "Tetrabenzyl Thiuram Disulfide," (TBzTD) as a non-Nitrosoamine accelerator, which could replace Nitrosoamine generating Thiurams. This new accelerator has been evaluated in a tread compound as a secondary accelerator. Also, Flexsys has developed N-t-butyl-2-benzothiazole Sulfenamide (TBSI) as a non-Nitrosoamine accelerator which could replace 2-(Morpholinothio) -benzothiazole (MBS), a scorch delayed Sulfendamide accelerator. TBSI has been evaluated in a Natural Rubber (NR) belt skim compound vs. MBS. An optimum low rolling resistant cure system has been developed in a NR tread with Dithiomorpholine (DTDM). Also, future requirements for developing accelerators will be discussed such as the replacement of DTDM and other stable crosslink systems. Antidegradants are divided into two different types for use in tire compounds. Internal tire compounds such as apex, carcass, liner, wire breaker, cushion, base tread and bead compounds are protected by antioxidants against degradation from oxygen and heat due to mechanical shear. The external components such as sidewall, chafer and cap tread com-pounds are protected from ozone by antiozonants and waxes. Various kinds of staining and non-staining antioxidants have been evaluated in a tire carcass compound. Also, various para-phenylene diamine antiozonants have been evaluated in a tire sidewall compound to achieve the improved lifetime of the tire. New non-staining antiozonants such as 2, 4, 6-tris-(N-1, 4-dimethylpentyl-p-phenylene diamine) 1, 3, 5 Trizine (D-37) and un-saturated Acetal (AFS) will be discussed in the tire sidewall to achieve better appearance. The future requirements of antidegradants will be presented to improve tire performance such as durability, better appearance and longer lasting tires.
Life history and control methods of Aphanostigma iakusuiense Kishida were studied during April to November, 1974, in the Naju pear orchard area, Cholla Namdo. The results are summarized as follows: 1. More than $60\%$ of wintering eggs were found at the height of 1.5 to 2.0m from the soil surface, with approximately $10\%$ at 0.5 to 1.5m and 1.5 to 2.5m respectively. 2. There was little difference in the size of egg masses and hatching ratio $(12.7-13.7\%)$ between the varieties of host trees, Mansamkil and Kooksoo. 3. Hatching was not observed until April 6, but hatches of $12.8\%$ on April 13 and $90.6\%$ on May 4 were found. 4. During the hatching season in early spring, 8 chemicals were applied to test effectiveness of control. C8514, Metasystox, Acar 338, and Parathion were more effective than either Sevin or Malix for control of this insect. 5. Highest populations of pear phylloxera ocurred from August 20 to September 20 at which time levels of eggs and larvae were simillar in abundance. 6. In tests for control of this insect after in paper bags, DDVP, Loxon, C8514, Sevin, and Binapacryl were more effective than either EPN or Otran. 7. Predacious mite, Protolaelape pygmaeus Miller, and several species of lady beetles (Coccinellidae) preying on this insect as natural enemies were collected. The predation ratio of mites varied according to region: that is 0.77 to $18.6\%$ in Bia Orchard; $7.88-48.7\%$ in Noan Orchard and almost none in Youngsanoo Orchard. 8. The varietal difference in fruit damage by this insect was in the order of Choseng Chuck, Kooksoo, followed by Sin Ko, Mansamkil, Keumchon Choo, and Changsimrang.

Stored grain insects appear frequently as grains are harvested, stored, and distributed on the market. Producers mostly depend on chemical fumigants to control and repel insect pests, but this application of chemicals may cause side effects for humans and the environment. Safer control approaches, including the use of natural products are required, and in this study, we assessed the control effect of essential oils on stored grain insects. The essential oils of 8 plant species from 6 families were tested for their fumigant toxicity and repellent effects using a Y-tube Olfactometer against Sitophilus zeamais adults. Pennyroyal and tea tree oil respectively exhibited 97% and 63% mortality at $10{\mu}{\ell}L^{-1}$ air concentration in tested fumigant toxicity. Of particular note, pennyroyal oil ($LT_{50}$, hour=3.87) showed higher adulticidal activities than tea tree oil ($LT_{50}$, hour=4.09). When assessing repellent effects, using a Y-tube Olfactometer at $10{\mu}{\ell}$/filter paper concentration, the cedarwood, cinnamon, cypress, patchouli and pennyroyal essential oils showed potent repellent activities against Sitophilus zeamais adults. Cinnamon, cypress and pennyroyal essential oils showed notably high repellent activities of 82.4%, 80.0% and 86.7%, respectively, at $1{\mu}{\ell}$/filter paper concentration.
