  • Ecological corridor is the facility to connect two habitats fragmented by roads, dam, housing and industrial area. Critics of faunal corridors have suggested that they are simply an untested application of unproved island biogeography theory. But, everyone agree that ecological corridor is important useful structural components that help animal movement in fragmented landscapes. There are 52 ecological corridors in Korea. We investigated 43 ecological corridors of these and recorded the size of corridor, planting species, management and growth condition. We compared planting species to nearby exiting vegetation species and structure. We found that there are no considerations for many aspects of planting, for example, planting species, structure, animal migration and behavior, surrounding vegetation etc. Expecially, It was ignored management of plants, difference of surrounding vegetation, lacks of diverse planting species and structure. We suggest planting the native species of tall tree, shrub and ground cover, edge planting for transitional space between road and natural habitat, planting for foraging and breeding of target animal, diverse layer vegetation, and open space of center for rapid animal dispersal.

  • Pinus species are native to the Northern Hemisphere and some parts of the tropics to temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere. They were used as food and medicine in prehistoric times. Massonianoside B is a compound found in pine trees and possesses antioxidant activity. In order to determine the presence and content of this compound in Pinus species, three different parts (needles, branches, and bark) of three Pinus species were extracted and investigated. High-performance liquid chromatography with a gradient elution system along with a reverse-phase INNO column with photodiode array detector was employed. Results showed that the branches of the three Pinus species had higher massonianoside B content (5.502 to 9.751 mg/g DW) than either the needles or bark. Furthermore, among the three species, P. rigida × P. taeda had the highest concentration of total massonianoside B (11.557 mg/g DW). These findings thus provide evidence of biological activity in Pinus species and establish a foundation for further research.

  • The relationships between the cover of herbaceous species and 15 soil chemical properties (organic carbon contents, total N, available P, exchangeable K, Na, Ca and Mg, HCl-extractable Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in nine poorly controlled waste landfill sites in Korea were examined by correlation analysis and multiple regression equations. Species showed different patterns of correlation between their cover values and soil chemical properties. The cover of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Aster subulatus var. sandwicensis and Erechtites hieracifolia were negatively correlated with the contents of Fe, Mn and Ni within landfill soils. Total cover of all species in quadrats was positively correlated with the contents of Cd and negatively correlated with the contents of Mn and Fe from stepwise regression analysis with 15 soil properties. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that the distribution of native and exotic plants on poorly controlled landfills was significantly influenced by the contents of Na and Ca in soils, respectively.

  • Fecal samples collected from 1,424 cattle were examined for the presence of Coccidia species. A total of eleven species of Eimeria was identified; among the species identified as above E. bovis and E. zuernii appeared with relatively higher infection rates. The infection rate was most prevalent in Korean native cattle (29.07%), followed by the imported beef cattle (18.41%) and the dairy cattle (11. 99%). The number of species within positive samples ranged from one to four.

  • This study characterized the genetic variations of 13 populations of Asplenium antiquum and its relative species using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total 88 scorable RAPD bands were generated by the 12 random oligo primers and were analyzed by Nei and Li's genetic distance. High genetic variability was detected between A. antiquum and A. nidus, with the range from 0.568 to 0.682. And slightly low genetic variations showed within the populations of same species. Seven populations of A. antiquum showed slight differences (0.000-0.216), and five populations of A. nidus showed similar low genetic variations (0.114 to 0.171). Two individuals from Sup-seom Island which are growing in might be the regenerated one from abroad. A. antiquum were clustered as two groups (Group I, Group II) by UPGMA phenogram. And five populations of A. nidus were clustered as two groups correlated with geographical distribution. The RAPD data was very useful to define the genetic variations and to discuss the phylogenetic relationships among A. antiquum and the related species..

  • We report somatic chromosome numbers for three species belonging to the Euphorbia pekinensis complex distributed in Far East Asia. In E. pekinensis populations distributed in Korea, 2n = 28 and 56 were found, while the Japanese native E. lasiocaula was also found at 2n = 28 and 56 and the Japanese endemic E. sinanensis was found at 2n = 20. Based on the number of chromosomes, E. lasiocaula distributed in Japan supports treatment as a variety of E. pekinensis rather than as a different species, while E. sinanensis should be recognized as a distinct species rather than as a variety of E. pekinensis. In the same populations of E. pekinensis and E. lasiocaula, diploid and tetraploid individuals were found, and the diversity of these chromosome numbers was consistent with the morphological diversity of these populations, suggesting the future evolutionary potential of this species.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the linguistic origin of the species manes of landscape plants in order to help students understand the physical characteristics of the plants through the botanical names. This study includes the plants that are possible to use as landscape material as well as both the native and foreign plants that are already used. Name of Species of Scientific name in Landscape plant be derived from region or nations of habitat, botanist, plant explors, and their sponser, and plant form and number of leaves or flowers, character or ingredient of plants and shape of stem, tree crown form. In this paper, about 300 species(contains varieties, formas) are interpreted into etymological meanings.

  • The conventional pulping processes in Iran were reviewed in this paper. On account of forest resources restriction, a considerable extent of non-harvestable hardwood forests, the possibility of accessable non-wood resources and Poplar fast-growing species for using in pulp and paper industry was investigate. The cultivated area and abundance of each mentioned raw material (Wheat Straw, Sugarcane Bagasse, Poplars) were specified and the quality of their produced papers were compared in strength and opacity properties. Spruce species data was used for experiments comparisons. Regarding to environmental pollutions, low yield, inflexibility in wood and non-wood species resulted from the existent conventional processes of paper manufacturing, APMP is recommended due to high quality paper, desirable opacity properties, high yield and also the usage for all the raw materials.

  • Silene fissipetala Turcz., which is native to Continental China and Taiwan, was newly found in Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. S. fissipetala is similar to the related taxa S. antirrhina L., S. armeria L., and S. koreana Kom. in that it has glutinous zones. However, S. fissipetala is distinguished from the congeneric species by the presence of laciniate at the petals. The species grows on slopes and roadsides, suggesting that it is likely to have been introduced through the installation of green sites and road construction. A precise description, photographs, voucher specimens and a key to related taxa are provided.

  • Variations of cyanogenic glucoside was investigated on varieties, picking date, each part and processed flood of Ume. First, variation of amygdalin contents was determined by HPLC during ripening. As a result in case of peels, Oshuku showed most highest content(20.2 mg%) in all varieties. In case of seeds, Native species showed most highest content(562 mg%), and seeds contented more than peels. And then, variation of prunasin contents was determined by HPLC. As a results in case of peels, native species contented most lowest prunasin in all varieties, and its contents slightly decreased with increased storage periods. Other hand, in case of seeds, native species contented most highest prunasin(177 mg%). Contents of amygdalin and prunasin of extracts was determined by HPLC during six month ripening. As a result, in case of freezing storages contents of those not changed hardly during ripening. But, in case of native storage, contents of amygdalin was decreased and prunasin was increased with increased aging periods. Profile of Ume tea was similar to extracts of it.
