The genetic diversity and species-diagnostic markers in the introduced apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata and in the native Thai apple snails; Pila ampullacea, P. angelica, P. pesmei, and P. polita, were investigated by restriction analysis of COI and are reported for the first time. Twenty-one composite haplotypes showing non-overlapping distributions among species were found. Genetic heterogeneity analysis indicated significant differences between species (P < 0.0001) and within P. pesmei (P < 0.0001) and P. angelica (P < 0.0004). No such heterogeneity was observed in Pomacea canaliculata (P > 0.0036 as modified by the Bonferroni procedure), P. ampullacea (P = 0.0824-1.000) and P. polita (P = 1.0000). A neighbor-joining tree based on genetic distance between pairs of composite haplotypes differentiated all species and indicated that P. angelica and P. pesmei are closely related phylogenetically. In addition, the 16S rDNA of these species was cloned and sequenced. A species-specific PCR for P. canaliculata was successfully developed with a sensitivity of detection of approximately 50 pg of the target DNA template. The amplification of genomic DNA (50 pg and 25 ng) isolated from the fertilized eggs, and juveniles (1, 7, and 15 d after hatching) of Pomacea canaliculata was also successful, and suggested that Pomacea canaliculata and Pila species can be discriminated from the early stages of development.
Background and objective: This study was carried out to assess the relationship between the internal and external environments and the ecological items in five sites with a high level of artificial use intensity prior to the establishment of Geumgang River riparian ecological belts. Methods: The sites were classified into forest type, cultivated land type and urbanized type in accordance with their respective locational types. Ecological items including plant ecology such as proportion, naturalization index and urbanization index of native species were analyzed and animal ecology such as the number of species and population of wild birds, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and butterflies and dragonflies, which are indicator insects, were investigated. In addition, species diversity indices of wild birds, butterflies and dragonflies found in all the subject lands were computed. Results: Among the plant ecological items, the ratio of native species in the forest type was higher than 90%, which was a satisfactory level, while the naturalization and urbanization indices were less than 10%. The number of species in the animal ecological characteristics was reduced in the order of forest type, cultivated land type and urbanized type. As the results of correlation analysis, the internal area of the planted area showed a negative correlation with the total of individuals. The area of grasslands showed a positive correlation with the number of dragonfly species and the total number of individuals, thereby illustrating that wet grasslands have positive effects. The area of surrounding forests, as an external environment, had a negative correlation with the urbanization index (UI) but a positive correlation with the inhabitation of butterflies and the total number of species. Conclusion: The results confirmed the need for more diversified special compositions including planted land, grassland, wetland, bodies of water and waterways within the subject land in the wetland ecological belt along with the need for surrounding forest location and preservation from the perspective of purchase and restoration of land for enhancement of wider biodiversity in the future.
Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) convert ethanol to acetic acid through oxidation, and the fermentation pathway of AAB is important in the vinegar industry. The genus Acetobacter is the representative one of AAB, and several Korean traditional vinegars are produced using Acetobacter strains. Until now, four species in the genus Acetobacter were reported as native species in Korea. During the past two years, we isolated several AAB strains from fruits, flowers and fermented foods, and several AAB species unrecorded in Korea were found on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses. In this study, we report eight Acetobacter species as native ones which are A. fabarum C10-3 (=KACC 21483) isolated from plumcot fruit (Naju-si), A. lovaniensis KDG-EC1 (=KACC 22697) isolated from diced radish kimchi (Naju-si), A. okinawensis GAM12-M2 (=KACC 22696) isolated from persimmon fruit (Sangju-si), A. orientalis FR32C4 (=KACC 22370) isolated from fruit of Cudrania tricuspidata (Jeonju-si), A. papaya FR35B3 (=KACC 22046) isolated from grape fruit (Yeongdong-gun), A. suratthaniensis GAM15-R2 (=KACC 22694) isolated from persimmon fruit(Gimje-si), A. syzygii C25-1 (=KACC 22048) isolated from peach fruit (Namwon-si) and A. thailandicus JDF1-M1 (=KACC 22693) isolated from plum fruit(Seoul).
Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus is one of the indigenous medicinal plant and the fruits of Acanthopanax spp. used as a remedial for "wipe out evil wind". Two anthocyanin were isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus. Their structures were elucidated as cyanidin 3-lathyroside (1) and cyanidin 3-galactoside (2) by chemicophysical and spectroscopic analysis. And also, four chemical, syringin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and acanthoside D were identified. Both anthocyanide were isolated for the first time from Acanthopanax species. cyanidin 3-lathyroside is one of the rare anthocyanin in natural resources.
Blood samples were obtained from Korean native cattle and dairy cattle of Holstein species in the slaughter house and methylene blue color tests were performed for the detection of the inherited susceptibitity to hemolysis. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities expressed as the optical density obtained by methylene blue color test were the highest as 0.54 in male Korean cattle, 0.62 in female Korean cattle and 0.72 in dairy cattle of Holstein species. Percent hemolysis, packed cell volume and plasma protein contents were measured and compaired with relation to the results of methylene blue color test and no correlation were observed in each.

The present experiments have been conducted to find out the plant's growth environments habitate, mode of life, characteristic of photosynthesis, habit of growth and propagation. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Sambucus williamsii var. Coreana distributes around all sides of native site without having any relation to altitude, inclination and direction. 2. In the native site, Robinia pseudo - acacia and its neighboring species were Prunus yedoensis, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Lindera obtusiloba and Staphylea bumalda. From 21 to 41 types of species were located in the vegetation of the quadrat area. 3. According to the variation of leaf temperature with the result of the change of net photosynthetic rate, the optimum temperature for growth is $25^{\circ}C$. 4. The rooted rate of vegetative propagation was the highest at 100ppm IBA plot and the lowest at 200ppm BA plot. 5. The rooted rates of Sambucus williamsii var. coreana in perlite 50% bed, vermiculite bed and peatmoss 50%+sand 50% bed are higher than others.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of pork and beef meat according to species (pork: modern genotype pork, Korean native black pork; beef: Holstein, Korean native cattle) and cuts (pork: shoulder, ham, loin; beef: loin, tenderness, round). Methods: The moisture content, protein content, fat content, ash content, fatty acid compositions pH, whater holding capacity, cooking loss, shear force, color, and sensory characteristics were measured in triplicate. Results: The moisture content, pH, cooking loss, and shear force of modern genotype pork were significantly higher than the Korean native black pork; in addition, the moisture content of loin was significantly higher than shoulder and ham. The fatty acid compositions for different parts of pork showed no significant differences. Among the sensory characteristics, the parameters of pork were not significantly different. The moisture content of Holstein was significantly higher than Korean native cattle. The fatty acid composition of beef could not confirm the specific differences. Water holding capacity of Korean native cattle was higher than Holstein, while cooking loss of Korean native cattle was lower than Holstein. Overall acceptability scores of Korean native cattle was higher than Holstein. Conclusion: The study results of several parameters in selected raw meat samples provide useful information for developing new strategies to improve the quality of meat products consumption.
This study investigated native Rubus coreanus community in Korea(Ulleung island and Jeju island excepted). The quadrates were located in the middle of the native Rubus coreanus habitats. As the result of the research, the patter of native habitats were found to be divided into mountain roadsides, second-transition rents, severely damaged rents in the mountain, strictly protected regions, and environmentally harsh regions. The research revealed 218 taxa in total, in which 71 families, 165 genera, 18 varieties,1 forma and 199 species were checked in the flora of the native Rubu coreanus habitats. In this flora, the perennial plants appeared in as much as 80.74% proportion and appearance-frequency of the compositae was highest, accounting for 7.80%.
