Assessment of Equivalent Heights of Soil for the Lateral Earth Pressure Against Retaining Walls Due to Design Truck Load by 3D Numerical Analysis (3차원 수치해석에 의한 표준트럭하중에 의해 옹벽에 작용하는 수평토압의 등가높이 산정)

  • The lateral load from traffic depends on standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The method of limit state design has been adopted and used for design of roads in the Republic of Korea since 2015. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loading is often used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the standard truck of the nation, based on the findings from analytical solutions using 3D finite element method. Compare to US, the standard truck loading has a structure where the axle load is concentrated so that the equivalent load height is estimated to be slightly larger than AASHTO for lower retaining wall height. It would be reasonable to present the equivalent load height in Korea more conservatively than AASHTO in terms of securing long term stability of the retaining wall structure.

  • The road network system of major domestic urban areas such as city of Seoul was rapidly developed and regionally expanded. In addition, many kinds of life-lines such as electrical cables, telephone cables, water&sewerage lines, heat&cold conduits and gas lines were needed in order for urban residents to live comfortably. Therefore, most of the life-lines were individually buried in underground and individually managed. The utility tunnel is defined as the urban planning facilities for commonly installing life-lines in the National Land Planning Act. Expectation effectiveness of urban utility tunnels is reducing repeated excavation of roads, improvement of urban landscape; road pavement durability; driving performance and traffic flow. It can also be expected that ensuring disaster safety for earthquakes and sinkholes, smart-grind and electric vehicle supply, rapid response to changes in future living environment and etc. Therefore, necessity of urban utility tunnels has recently increased. However, all of the constructed utility tunnels are cut-and-cover tunnels domestically, which is included in development of new-town areas. Since urban areas can not accommodate all buried life-lines, it is necessary to study the feasibility assessment system for utility tunnel by urban patterns and capacity optimization for urban utility tunnels. In this study, we break away from the new-town utility tunnels and suggest a quantitative assessment model based on the evaluation index for urban areas. In addition, we also develop a program that can implement a quantitative evaluation system by subdividing the feasibility assessment system of urban patterns. Ultimately, this study can contribute to be activated the urban utility tunnel.

A Fundamental Study on the Relationship Between Riparian Vegetation and Surface Temperature - Focused on Cheonggaecheon Stream Restoration - (하천 및 녹지와 온도의 관계에 대한 기초적 연구 - 청계천 복원을 중심으로 -)

  • Human beings have pursued development and economic betterment; thus, enhancing convenience and prosperity. A flourish of human civilization upon the industrialization results a massive urbanization. However, human beings have connived the environmental importance in the course of rapid urbanization. The environmental quality now becomes one of the most important factors that determine the quality of life in a city. Many studies were proceeded about the heat island effect in large cities. In general, most studies have been done to investigate urban microclimate phenomena using meteorological network or AWS (automatic weather station) data. Those preceding studies do not seem to sufficiently reflect the and thus, failed to show regional representative. In this study, temporal Landsat TM satellite imageries of May 20, 1987 and May 21, 1999 were 뻐d in order to detect the surface temperature of the study area using the band 6 ($10.4{\mu}m{\sim}12.5{\mu}m$). The surface temperature distribution detected by the band 6 of Landsat TM was over layed with the land cover classification data in order to investigate the temperature difference of the paved road and the riparian areas of the stream. As a result, a surface temperature difference as much as $3^{\circ}C$ between the paved road and the riparian areas with vegetation was observed. This study concludes that the land cover change is one of the main causes of urban heat island effect which may be closely affected by the paved areas and roads. Besides, the change of the atmospheric temperature followed by the urban secular change could have been confirmed. In the case of Yangjaecheon stream which underwent a heavy environmental restoration in 1995, the temperature was decreased as much as $0.6^{\circ}C$ after the restoration. The results of this study is expected to contribute to develop an urban space in harmony with the healthy human life and the environment respecting the crucial role of vegetation to stabilize the urban environmental dynamics.

Characteristics and Energy Absorbing Capacity for Rockfall Protection Fence from In-Situ Rockfall Tests (현장 낙석실험을 통한 낙석방지울타리의 특성 및 성능 평가)

  • Rockfall protection fences are used for diminishing rockfall damage in roads side slopes. In order to install the fences in effective way, the conditions of rock slopes and total predicted impact energy of fa11ing rock should be considered. However, the fences have been constructed without any consideration for lithology, height and slope angle of rock slope in Korea. In addition, the information about the performance of the protection fences, which should be evaluated by in-situ test or laboratory test in order to check out the practical use in the field, is not available. Therefore, in design manual for the rockfall protection fence, the specific details for the installation of this type of fence are not provided yet. The full sized rockfall in situ test was carried out for the calculation of falling energy of rock and the evaluation of the maximum energy absorbing capacity of fence. For this test, the rock slopes whose heights are about 20 m and dip angle of 65 degree, have been chosen. This is because those geometries are mean height and slope angle of most road cut slopes along Korean national highway. Based on the preliminary simulation procedure, four different sizes of concrete ball (0.7, 1.3, 2.3 and 4.3 ton) were prepared and flour different types of protection fence were constructed. The results of this test provide information about the maximum energy absorbing capacity of the fence, kinetic energy of rockfall and restitution coefficient, and these results can be utilized in the establishment of rockfall fence design and construction manual.

  • Since 2000, Korea has seen a big trend in the market, as the EU tightened regulations on environment due to global warming, high oil prices and aging rural population distribution, strengthening the need for multi-purpose electric moto vehicles for small farmers based on eco-friendly energy. Multi-purpose electric motor vehicles for rural small businesses will be a very innovative means of transportation, not only maintained at a low cost and to reduce greenhouse gases through the activation of eco-friendly energy, but also be a very innovative means of transportation for reducing the labor intensity of the aging farming industry and transporting night work and logistics. In this paper, with the implementation of eco-friendly energy policies, small and medium-sized rural small business owners can easily operate on unpaved roads and well-drawn farming environments, while the intensity of labor can be reduced when transporting crops also can simply replace parts at a low cost in the event of an accident. To propose rural multi-purpose modular electric vehicles, the existing literature is reviewed and 12 modular parts are presented by benchmarking electric vehicles at home and abroad. This paper is thought to be helpful for the research of the industry as well as the design industry of modular electric vehicles.

Fast Heuristic Algorithm for Similarity of Trajectories Using Discrete Fréchet Distance Measure (이산 프레셰 거리 척도를 이용한 궤적 유사도 고속계산 휴리스틱 알고리즘)

  • A trajectory is the motion path of a moving object. The advances in IT have made it possible to collect an immeasurable amount of various type of trajectory data from a moving object using location detection devices like GPS. The trajectories of moving objects are widely used in many different fields of research, including the geographic information system (GIS) field. In the GIS field, several attempts have been made to automatically generate digital maps of roads by using the vehicle trajectory data. To achieve this goal, the method to cluster the trajectories on the same road is needed. Usually, the $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ distance measure is used to calculate the distance between a pair of trajectories. However, the $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ distance measure requires prolonged calculation time for a large amount of trajectories. In this paper, we presented a fast heuristic algorithm to distinguish whether the trajectories are in close distance or not using the discrete $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ distance measure. This algorithm trades the accuracy of the resulting distance with decreased calculation time. By experiments, we showed that the algorithm could distinguish between the trajectory within 10 meters and the distant trajectory with 95% accuracy and, at worst, 65% of calculation reduction, as compared with the discrete $Fr{\acute{e}}chet$ distance.

A Study on Passengers' Travel Characteristics at Bus Stops on Seoul Ring Expressway (서울외곽순환고속도로 버스정류장 승하차 및 환승통행실태)

  • This study explores passengers' travel characteristics at six bus stops on the Seoul Ring Expressway using smart traffic card data. Based on the characteristics, political strategies to improve bus facilities on expressway are suggested. Firstly, among them two bus stops of Guri and Uiwang-Cheonggye have higher transfer rate of passengers, 37.56% and 36.9% of the total intercity (red) bus passengers on the expressway, respectively. Secondly, Uiwang-Cheonggye bus stop has the highest transfer rate, and Guri bus stop has also higher transfer rate and the highest on-and-off passengers. It implies that both bus stops need to be prioritized for improving bus stop facility, access roads, and connection facility between the bi-directional stops. Thirdly, Guri (down) bus stop has relatively longer waiting time for transfer, thus shorter bus headways running the bus stop should be considered. Lastly, most passengers using both stops come to and from Bundang-gu in Geongnam City. Overall, the results of this study would be helpful for transport planners to develop effective bus route policies and bus operation.

Feasibility Study on the Introduction of the Transfer-Traffic System to Tourist Resorts (Focused on Naejang Mt. National Park) (관광지 환승 교통시스템 도입 타당성에 관한 연구 (내장산국립공원을 중심으로))

  • Tour traffic takes largely place at certain limited period of time so that it is desirable to adopt some kind of software-typed approaches like the introduction of a new traffic system rather than hardware-typed ones of extension or construction of roads, and which naturally leads to the need of establishing a new tour traffic policy that makes the most profit at the lowest cost. In this research, I studied cognitive characteristics of traffic congestion of tour traffic and non-tour traffic and constructed a transfer traffic-choice behavior model for the introduction of transfer-traffic system and examined its influence factors. As a result, it is revealed that respondents feel much more the cognitive strength of traffic congestion at tourist resorts than they feel usually at non-tourist sites. That means the necessity of the introduction of the policy that enhances access to tourist resorts. In closing, through the transfer-traffic choice behavior model, I identified the fact that the introduction of transfer-traffic system could convert the trend of highly frequent use of passenger cars on tourism season into public transportation use, which shows that relevant policy-makers ultimately need to make a comprehensive policy considering traffic aspect in revitalizing tour resorts.

A study on the operation characteristics of oversized exhaust port applicable to double-deck tunnel (복층터널에 적용 가능한 화재 연동형 대배기구 운영 특성 분석 연구)

  • Recently, the number of underground road development projects has been increasing to solve traffic problems in the national capital region and metropolitan areas with intensified overcrowding, and there has been a tendency to plan underground roads by applying a double-deck tunnel technology that has advantages in constructability and economical efficiency. The double-deck tunnel has a structure where one excavation section is divided into two parts and used as up and down lines, and is mainly used as a road for small vehicles only due to its low floor height. In addition, due to the small cross-sectional area, it has characteristics different from those of general road tunnels in terms of ventilation and disaster prevention. In this regard, this study proposed an operational plan that applies an oversized exhaust system, which is one of semi-transverse ventilation systems, to small cross-sectional tunnels like double-deck tunnel with low floor height, and a comparative analysis between smoke exhaust characteristics according to the fire occurrence locations and oversized exhaust systems was conducted using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The results showed that unlike uniform exhaust, intensive smoke exhaust using the oversized exhaust port maximized the delay effect of smoke diffusion and limited the smoke within 50 m above and below the fire point.

Change Detection Using Image Differencing Method in Pyeongtaeg City (화상간(畵像間) 차이법(差異法)을 활용한 평택시 지역 지표면(地表面) 변화탐지(變化探知))

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and seek the best suitable band and threshold boundary level on the change detection of image differencing method using Landsat TM data(20 May 1987 and 20 May 1993) in Pyeongtaeg City. The change detection images differencing method were evaluated by using normal reference data with an optimal threshold level{$mean{\pm}(SD{\times}T$ value). The normal reference data consisted of positive change{change dark into light in image pattern, that is, it changed arable land(paddy, upland, forest and so on) to artificial area(buildings, vinyl-house and roads, etc)} and negative change(change light into dark in image pattern, that is, it changed artificial area into arable land). As the result, the kappa coefficients of visible bands(D1, D2 and D3) were higher than those of infrared bands(D4, D5 and D7), and than D1 image with 1.0 thresholding and normal reference data was a improved result in the land-surface change detection such as kappa coefficient : 68.4%, overall accuracy : 89.2%, negative change : 6.6%, positive change : 10.6%.
