  • Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared using a two-step deep eutectic solvent (DES) and enzymatic pretreatment followed by mechanical defibrillation, and we examined the effects of enzymatic pretreatment conditions on different characteristics of the LCNFs thus obtained. The LCNFs yielded using the two-step DES pretreatment (Enz-LCNF) exhibited a well-defibrillated entangled web-like structure with an average fiber diameter ranging from 15.7 to 20.4 nm. Furthermore, we found that the average diameter and filtration time of the Enz-LCNFs decreased with an increase in enzyme concentration and enzymatic treatment time, whereas we detected a concomitant reduction in the tensile strength of the Enz-LCNF sheets. The Enz-LCNFs were characterized by a typical cellulose I structure, thereby indicating that the enzymatic treatment causes very little damage to the crystalline form.

  • This study was conducted to grasp users' preferences and behavior of forest paths and to provide basic data for forest path construction in the future. Among forest path users, males and females over 20 years old were surveyed on forest path preferences, motives for visiting, using time and distance, companions, and sources for obtaining information on forest paths. A total of 587 people participated in the questionnaire, and cross-analysis was conducted simultaneously using the SPSS statistical program. In analyzing the preference of forest paths, it was found that male and the general public preferred trekking path for activities while female and foresters preferred forest path for relaxation and healing (p<0.05). As for the motives for visiting forest paths, the response that they visited for a walk/rest was the highest in gender, occupation, and age group. As for the number of annual visits, less than 5 was the highest in overall, and foresters tended to visit forest path more often than the general public, and the number of visits to the forest paths increased with age (p<0.01). The most common route to acquire information about forest paths is the Internet, while the Internet use is relatively low in those over 60s (p<0.05). The response ratio of accompanying their family in visiting forest paths were the highest, while the response in their 20s and 60s was the most in accompanying their friends (p<0.05).

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the non-timber forest functions of the Research Forest area of Kangwon National University. In this study, forest recreation function was investigated through survey method answered by forest management experts. The evaluation factors for forest recreation function were separated into external and internal factors. Each factor was classified into intermediate element and detailed element. Therefore in this study, the evaluation factors of forest recreation function were divided into two groups which are the potential of external factors and the suitability of internal factors. Potential of the external factors were divided into accessibility, location, landscape and induction factors while the suitability of internal factor was divided into stand structure, forest structure and human impact. The priority of the potential of external factors was in order that location, accessibility, induction factors and landscape. The most important factors for the location, accessibility, induction and landscape factors are based on regional characteristics.

  • Objectives: Scientific verification for health effects has been constantly demanded through the forest healing factors. In this study, phytoncide concentration which is one of the forest healing factors, was investigated according to stand density, season and visiting time, and analyzed correlation with micrometeorology factors. Methods: Total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and Natural volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) were collected using a measuring instrument which is connected to an air pump with the Tenax TA tube. The 32NVOCs were selected through the detailed criteria of adequacy assessment for recreational forest. The statistical analysis (correlation and stepwise regression analysis) was conducted between phytoncide concentration and micrometeorology factors. Results: NVOCs concentration linearly increased according to stand density. The high level showed in the summer (p<0.05), and there is no significant difference according to visiting hours of the Healing forest. NVOCs is a negative correlation with solar radiation, PAR and wind direction, and a positive correlation with relative humidity and temperature (p<0.01). NVOCs increased following the increase of humidity and temperature ($R^2=0.55$). Conclusions: Phytoncide linearly increased according to stand density, and showed the correlation significantly with microclimate factors. In future, these results will be utilized as a basic material to promote the generation of phytoncide, which positively influences human health promotion and manage the forest welfare space.

  • This study was conducted to estimate litter carbon stock change from the National Forest Inventory (NFI) data for national greenhouse gas inventory report. Litter carbon stocks were calculated from the NFI dataset in NFI5 (2008) and NFI6 (2013) in Gangwon province. Total carbon stock change of litter was $0.68{\pm}0.71\;t\;C/ha$ from NFI5 (2008) to NFI6 (2013), however, there was no significant difference between the both dataset at 2008 and 2013 year. Litter carbon stock of coniferous stands was higher than deciduous stands in NFI5 (2008) and NFI6 (2013) (P<0.05). This study was limited to pilot study, so we will assess litter carbon stock using more complete data from NFI systems. It can be used as data sources for national greenhouse gas inventory report on forest sector.

  • This study was carried out to investigate pulping properties of the forest biomass arising from the national forest management operation. The forest biomass was collected and classified into many groups according to their species and age. After the chips were made from the forest biomass, the measurement of chip size and chemical analysis were performed. To make the pulps from the forest biomass, the kraft pulping was applied and thereafter the physical and optical properties of kraft pulps were measured. The pulp fibers from the forest biomass had the similar mean fiber length, but their properties became different according to wood species and ages. Differently from the other species, kraft pulps from chestnut wood had the highest kappa number. Acacia, paulownia and chestnut woods made kraft pulps with lower tensile strength and brightness than the others. It could be concluded that acacia, paulownia and chestnut woods must be screened out in order to make a good quality of kraft pulps while being collected during Forest Management Operation.

  • We have researched the image of different forest species by asking those who use these forests how they feel when enjoying them for their various purposes. We surveyed five different forest areas, these were a pine forest a korean pine forest a cypress forest a broad leafed forest and a mixed forest. We asked 806 people how these forests made them feel and what they thought was the image of these forests. We offered them a choice of 18 pairs of adjectives to describe how they felt. We used the SD Scale and discovered 4 different factors. A feeling of comfort and freshness and a feeling of order and space. There was also a feeling of intimacy with nature. Each forest gave out its own feeling and image. comfort and freshness was felt by those in the pine forest, the korean pine forest, the broad leafed forest and the mixed forest. A Feeling of order and space was felt in the korean pine forest. Intimacy was felt in the pine forest, broad leafed forest and the mixed forest.
