  • Since their first discovery, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become a material central to the field of nanotechnology. Owing to their splendid physical, structural and chemical properties, they have the potential to impact a wide range of applications, including advanced ceramics, nanoelectronic devices, nanoscale sensors, solar cells, battery electrodes, and field emitters. This review summarizes the synthetic methods of preparing CNTs and focuses on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, especially catalytic CVD. In order to stabilize and disperse the catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) during synthesis, zeolite was implemented as the template to support metal-containing NPs, so that both CNTs in the bulk and on a 2D substrate were successfully synthesized. Despite more challenges ahead, there is always hope for widespread ever-new applications for CNTs with the development of technology.

  • The metal catalyst particles which there is as impurities on a tip part of carbon nanotube (CNT) are not good to apply it to a nano-electronic device. It was very important the opening of CNT-tip to fix a target bio material and a material to accept in CNT in a biosensor, so we performed $HNO_3$ wet etching to remove the metal catalyst particle which there was on a tip part of CNT grown up in the study and observed the opened CNT-tip with etching time. We synthesized the CNTs using a HF-PECVD method and choses the CNT length of 700 nm for the application of nano-electronic device such as a biosensor etc.. We observed the opened CNT-tip with wet etching times of $HNO_3$ (10, 30, 60 min). From the results, we observed that the CNT-tip was opened with the increase of wet etching time lively. In case of CNTs etched during 60 min, we confirmed that there was not the ratio of Ni included in CNTsI as catalyst. Conclusively, in the case of CNT etched for 60 minutes, it is completely good for application of a biosensor and, in addition, the metal-free CNTs will contribute to the application of other nanoelectronic devices.

  • Miniaturized sensors capable of both sensitive and selective real-time monitoring of target analytes are tremendously valuable for various applications ranging from hazard detection to medical diagnostics. The wide-spread use of such sensors is currently limited due to insufficient selectivity for target molecules. We developed selective nanocoatings by combining trinitrotoluene (TNT) receptors bound to conjugated polydiacetylene (PDA) with single-walled carbon nanotube-field effect transistors (SWNT-FET). Selective binding events between TNT molecules and phage display derived TNT receptors were effectively transduced to sensitive SWNT-FET conductance sensors through the PDA coating. The resulting sensors exhibited unprecedented 1 fM sensitivity toward TNT in real time, with excellent selectivity over various similar aromatic compounds. Our biomimetic receptor coating approach may be useful for the development of sensitive and selective micro and nanoelectronic sensor devices for various other target analytes.

  • The thermoelectric Seebeck and Peltier effects of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) quantum dot nanodevice are investigated, taking into consideration a certain value of applied tensile strain and induced ac-field with frequency in the terahertz (THz) range. This device is modeled as a SWCNT quantum dot connected to metallic leads. These two metallic leads operate as a source and a drain. In this three-terminal device, the conducting substance is the gate electrode. Another metallic gate is used to govern the electrostatics and the switching of the carbon nanotube channel. The substances at the carbon nanotube quantum dot/metal contact are controlled by the back gate. Results show that both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients have random oscillation as a function of gate voltage in the Coulomb blockade regime for all types of SWCNT quantum dots. Also, the values of both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are enhanced, mainly due to the induced tensile strain. Results show that the three types of SWCNT quantum dot are good thermoelectric nanodevices for energy harvesting (Seebeck effect) and good coolers for nanoelectronic devices (Peltier effect).

  • Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has become an indispensable tool in efforts to develop the next generation of nanoelectronic devices, given its achievable nanometer spatial resolution and highly versatile ability to measure a variety of properties. Recently a new scanning probe microscope was developed to overcome the tip degradation problem of the classic SPM. The main advantage of this new method, called Reverse tip sample (RTS) SPM, is that a single tip can be replaced by a chip containing hundreds to thousands of tips. Generally for use in RTS SPM, pyramid-shaped diamond tips are made by molding on a silicon substrate. Combining RTS SPM with Scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) using the diamond tip offers the potential to perform 3D profiling of semiconductor materials. However, damage frequently occurs to the completed tips because of the complex manufacturing process. In this work, we design, fabricate, and evaluate an RTS tip chip prototype to simplify the complex manufacturing process, prevent tip damage, and shorten manufacturing time.

  • This study uses first-principles calculations to investigate the mechanical properties and effect of strain on the electronic properties of the 2D material 1H-PbX2 (X: S, Se). Firstly, the stability of the 1H Pb-dichalcogenide structures was evaluated using Born's criteria. The obtained results show that the 1H-PbS2 material possesses the greatest ideal strength of 3.48 N/m, with 3.68 N/m for 1H-PbSe2 in biaxial strain. In addition, 1H-PbS2 and 1H-PbSe2 are direct semiconductors at equilibrium with band gaps of 2.30 eV and 1.90 eV, respectively. The band gap was investigated and remained almost unchanged under the strain εxx but altered significantly at strains εyy and εbia. At the fracture strain in the biaxial direction (19 %), the band gap of 1H-PbS2 decreases about 60 %, and that of 1H-PbSe2 decreases about 50 %. 1H-PbS2 and 1H-PbSe2 can convert from direct to indirect semiconductor under the strain εyy. Our findings reveal that the two structures have significant potential for application in nanoelectronic devices.

  • The 2-dimensiona electron gas (2DEG) layers have opened tremendous interests in the heterooxide interfaces formed between two insulating materials, especially between LaAlO3 and $SrTiO_3$. The 2DEG layers exhibit extremely high mobility and carrier concentrations along with metallic transport phenomena unlike the constituent oxide materials, i.e., $LaAlO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$. The current work inserted artificially the interfacial layer, $Sr_xCa_{1-x}TiO_3$ between $LaAlO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$, with the aim to controlling the 2-dimensional transports. The insertion of the additional materials affect significantly their corresponding electrical transports. Such features have been probed using DC and AC-based characterizations. In particular, impedance spectroscopy was employed as an AC-based characterization tool. Frequency-dependent impedance spectroscopy have been widely applied to a number of electroceramic materials, such as varistors, MLCCs, solid electrolytes, etc. Impedance spectroscopy provides powerful information on the materials system: i) the simultaneous measurement of conductivity and dielectric constants, ii) systematic identification of electrical origins among bulk-, grain boundary-, and electrode-based responses, and iii) the numerical estimation on the uniformity of the electrical origins. Impedance spectroscopy was applied to the $LaAlO_3/Sr_xCa_{1-x}TiO_3/SrTiO_3$ system, in order to understand the 2-dimensional transports in terms of the interfacial design concepts. The 2-dimensional conduction behavior system is analyzed with special emphasis on the underlying mechanisms. Such approach is discussed towards rational optimization of the 2-dimensional nanoelectronic devices.
