  • The micron-sized indium zinc tin oxide (IZTO) particles were prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin and organic additives such as citric acid (CA) and ethylene glycol (EG) were added to aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin. The obtained IZTO particles prepared by spray pyrolysis from the aqueous solution without organic additives had spherical and filled morphologies, whereas the IZTO particles obtained with organic additives had more hollow and porous morphologies. The micron-sized IZTO particles with organic additives were changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particles, whereas the micron-sized IZTO particles without organic additives were not changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particle after post-treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and wet-ball milling for 24 hours. Surface resistances of micron-sized IZTO's before post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling were much higher than those of nano-sized IZTO's after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling. From IZTO with composition of 80 wt. % $In_2O_3$, 10 wt. % ZnO, and 10 wt. % $SnO_2$ which showed a smallest surface resistance IZTO after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling, thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering, and the electrical and optical properties were investigated.

  • We prepared the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles by the diffusion flame reactor and investigated the effects of several process variables on the generation and transport properties of $TiO_2$ particle. As the length from the tip of diffusion flame reactor increases, the size of $TiO_2$ particle increases by the coagulation between particles. The structure of $TiO_2$ particles prepared is almost found to be anatase. It was found that the $TiO_2$ particle size depends more largely on the change of reactor temperature than on the change of inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration.

  • Experiments in the batch soil/aqueous systems were conducted to compare the sorption onto soil and extraction efficiency of sorbed phenanthrene in the presence of the micelle-forming anionic surfactant(SDS) or the micelle-like amphiphilic nano-sized polyurethane particles. Micelle-like amphiphilic nano-sized polyurethane(APU) particles synthesized from amphiphilic urethane acrylate anionomers(UAA) could solubilize phenanthrene within their hydrophobic interiors as the same way that surfactants micelles did in aqueous phase.

  • Nano-sized Zinc selenide (ZnSe) powder was successfully synthesized using Zn and Se precursors in a hydrothermal process. Temperature for the synthesis was varied from $95^{\circ}C$ to $180^{\circ}C$ to evaluate its influence on the microstructural properties of the synthetic particles. ZnSe powder thus fabricated was characterized using various analytical tools such as SEM, XRD, TEM and UV-Vis methods. Two types of ZnSe particles, that is, the precipitated particle and the colloidal particles, were identified in the analysis. The precipitated particles were around 100 nm in average size, whereas the average size of the colloidal particles was around 20 nm. The precipitated particles made at $150^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ were found to be a single phase of ZnSe; however, an inhomogeneous phase was obtained at the lower synthesis temperature of $95^{\circ}C$, suggesting that the temperature for the synthesis should be over $100^{\circ}C$. The precipitated particles were inactive in the UV-Vis absorption investigation, whereas the colloidal particles showed that absorptions occurred at 380 nm in the UV-Vis spectrum.

  • Epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite was prepared, and the effects of alumina content on the dielectric properties were investigated in order to develop an insulation material for gas-insulated switchgears (GIS). Nano-sized alumina (average particle size: 30 nm) was also incorporated into the epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite. Dielectric tests were carried out in ASTM D 150, and capacitance (Cp) and dielectric loss (tanδ) were measured. The dielectric constant increased with increasing alumina content in the epoxy/micro-alumina system and the epoxy/micro-alumina/nano-alumina system. As 1,3-diglycidyl glyceryl ether (DGE) content increased, the dielectric constant decreased and dielectric loss increased. This ocurred as a result of the weak electric field enhancement due to homogeneous dispersion of micro- and nano-sized alumina particles in an epoxy composite.

  • In purpose of introducing the inverse magnetostrictive properties into the structural ceramics, $Al_2O_3$ based nanocomposites dispersed with nano-sized Ni-Co particles were studied. The composites were fabricated by the hydrogen reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3$ and NiO-CoO mixed powders. The mixtures were prepared by using Ni- and Co-nitrate $(Ni(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O\;and\;Co(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\6H_2O)$ as source materials for the Ni-Co particles. Microstructural observations revealed that nano-sized Ni-Co particles were dispersed homogeneously at $Al_2O_3$ grain boundaries. High strength above 1 GPa was obtained for the $Al_2O_3/10$ wt% Ni-Co nanocomposite fabricated by a controlled powder preparation process. The inverse magnetostrictive response to applied stress was obtained due to the presence of dispersed Ni-Co particles, which indicates a possibility to incorporate new functions into the structural ceramics without loosing the mechanical properties.

  • It is not easy to detect nano-sized airborne particles (< 100 nm in diameter) in air. Therefore, the condensation of the nanoparticles alongside of the size-classification is needed for their detection. This paper proposes a hybrid (aerodynamic+electrical) particle classification and condensation device using a micro virtual impactor (${\mu}VI$). The ${\mu}VI$ can classify the nanoparticles according to their size and condense the number concentration of nanoparticles interested. Firstly, the classification efficiency of the ${\mu}VI$ was measured for the particles, polystyrene latex (PSL), ranging from 80 to 250 nm in diameter. Secondly, the nanoparticles, NaCl of 50 nm in diameter, were condensed by 4 times higher. In consequence, the output signal was amplified by 4 times (before condensation: 4 fA, after condensation: 16 fA). It is expected that the proposed device will facilitate the detection of nanoparticles.

  • In this study, nano-sized cobalt oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm was prepared from a cobalt chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The influences of reaction temperature on the properties of the generated powder were examined. The average particle size of the particles formed based on the spray pyrolysis process at a reaction temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ is roughly 20 nm. Moreover, most of these particles cannot appear with an independent type, thereby coexisting in a droplet type. When the reaction temperature increases to $800^{\circ}C$, the average particle size not only increases to roughly 40 nm but also shows a more dense structure while the ratio of particles which shows a polygonal form significantly increases. As the reaction temperature increases to $900^{\circ}C$, the distribution of the particles is from roughly 70 nm to 100 nm, while most of the particle surface is more intricately close and forms a polygonal shape. When the reaction temperature increases to $1000^{\circ}C$, the particle size distribution of the powder shows an existing form from 80 nm to at least 150 nm in an uneven form. As the reaction temperature increases, the XRD peak intensity gradually increases, yet the specific surface area gradually decreases.

  • Nano-sized $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The effect of polymeric precursor and lithium carbonate flux on the morphology and luminescence characteristics of nano-sized $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles was investigated. When using the spray solution containing both the polymeric precursor and the flux, the $Y_2O_3:Eu$ particles with spherical shape and micron size were turned into nano-sized $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles during the post-treatment at high temperature. The mean size of $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles was affected by the contents of polymeric precursors and lithium carbonate flux, and preparation temperature. The as-prepared particles by spray pyrolysis at high temperature from solution containing high contents of polymeric precursors had good photoluminescence intensity under vacuum ultraviolet after post-treatment above $1,000^{\circ}C$. The prepared nano-sized $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles had comparable photoluminescence intensity under vacuum ultraviolet light with that of the commercial $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor particles prepared by solid state reaction method.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid materials have rapidly become a fascinating research field. In this study, $polyimide/TiO_2$ composites were synthesized from nano-sized anatase $TiO_2$ and two types of polyimide, that is, BPDA-PPD and PMDA-ODA. Nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles were prepared from $TiOEt_4$ solution by the sol-gel method. The synthesized PI/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by using XRD, TGA, FT-IR, TEM, and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). $TiO_2$ particles were dispersed well in polyimides and the mechanical and thermal stability of polyimide was improved with $TiO_2$ nano particles.
