  • We present a simple and an inexpensive method for the fabrication of a nano-fluidic filter and a nano-pore micromixer using self-assembly of nano-spheres and surface tension. Colloid-plug was formed by surface tension of liquid in a microchannel to fabricate nanofluidic filter. When colloid is evaporated, nano-spheres in a colloid are orderly stacked by a capillary force. Orderly stacked nano-spheres form 3-D nano-mesh which can be used as a mesh structure of a fluidic filter. We used silica nano-sphere whose diameter is $567{\pm}85nm$, and silicon micro-channel of $50{\mu}m$-diameter. Fabricated nano-fluidic filter in a micro-channel has median pore diameter of 158nm which was in agreement with expected diameter of the nano-pore of $128{\pm}19nm$. A nano-pore micromixer consists of $200\;{\mu}m-wide,\;100\;{\mu}m-deep$ micro-channel and self-assembled nano-spheres. In the nano-pore micromixer, two different fluids had no sooner met together than two fluids begin to mix at wide region. From the experimental study, we completely apply self-assembly of nano-spheres to nano-fluidic devices.

  • Boehmite sols have been prepared by crystallization of amorphous aluminum hydroxide gel obtained by hydrolysis and peptization of aluminum using acetic acid. The size of the boehmite crystallites could be controlled by Al molar concentration in amorphous gel by means of controlling grain growth at nucleation stage. The size of boehmite increases as a function of Al molar concentration. With increasing boehmite crystallite size, the $d_{(020)}$ spacing and the specific surface area decreases, whereas the pore volume increases along with pore size. Especially, the pore size of the boehmite sol particles is comparable to the crystallite size along the b axis, suggesting that the fibril thickness along the b axis among the crystallite dimensions of the boehmite contributes to the pore size. Therefore, the physical properties of boehmite sols can be determined by the crystallite size controlled as a function of initial Al concentration.

  • There has been increasing interest in the fabrication of nano-sized structures because of their various advantages and applications. Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) is one of the most successful methods to obtain highly ordered nano pores and channels. Also It can be obtained diverse pore diameter, density and depth through the control of anodization condition. The three types of substrates were used for anodization; sheets of Aluminum on Si wafer and Aluminum on Mo-coated Si wafer. In Aluminum sheet, a highly ordered array of nanoholes was formed by the two step anodization in 0.3M oxalic acid solutions at 10$^{\circ}C$ After the anodization, the remained aluminum was removed in a saturated HgCl$_2$ solution. Subsequently, the barrier layer at the pore bottom was opened by chemical etching in phosphoric acid. Finally, we can obtain the through-channel membrane. In these processes, the effect of various parameters such as anodizing voltage, anodizing time, pore widening time and pre-heat treatment are characterized by FE-SEM (HITACH-4700). The pore size. density and growth rate of membrane are depended on the anodizing voltage and temperature respectively. The pore size is proportional to applied voltage and pore widening time The pore density can be controlled by anodizing temperature and voltage.

  • In this work, the electrophoretic motion of dsDNA molecule represented by a polymer through an artificial nano-pore in a membrane is simulated using the numerical method combining the lattice Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamic method. The polymer motion is represented by Langevin molecular dynamics technique while the fluid flow is taken into account by fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann method. The hydrodynamic interactions between the polymer and solvent in a confined space with a membrane having a hole are considered explicitly through the frictional and the random forces. The electric field intensity over the space is obtained from a finite difference method. Initially, the polymer is placed at one side of the space, and an electric field is applied to drive the polymer to the other side of the space through the nano-pore. In future, we plan to study the effect of the polymer size and the electric field on the electrophoretic velocity.

  • Porous carbon materials were prepared with a thermal treatment of coal tar pitch at 550 in the Ar gas. Growth, merger, and distribution of pore were characterized with scanning electron microscopy as variation ascending temperature gradient and chamber pressure. After graphitizing at the 2600 (1 hr.), walls and connecting parts between pores were investigated with X-ray diffraction patterns. Wall thickness and pore size decreases as increasing ascending temperature gradient, and pore size becomes homogeneous. Graphite quality and thermal conductivity become higher due to the enhanced orientation of walls and connecting parts between pores.

  • An alumina membrane with nano-sized pores was fabricated by anodic oxidation. The shape and structure of the pore on alumina membrane were changed according to the roughness of aluminum surface. The shape and structure of the nano-sized pre were investigated according to purity of aluminum substrate for the anodization process. The aluminum substrates with 99.5% and 99.999% purities were used. The aluminum substrate(99.5%) was anodized after the processes of pressing, mechanical polishing, chemical polishing, and electrochemical polishing. The nano-sized pores with the pore size of 50 - 100nm, the cell size of 20-50nm and the thickness of $10{\mu}m{\sim}45{\mu}m$ were obtained. Even though the electrochemical polishing was used for the aluminum substrate (99.999%), the same characteristics as the aluminum substrate (99.5%) was obtained. The alumina membrane prepared by anodization for 5 min using fixed voltage method shows the pore with irregular shape. The pore shape was changed to regular shape after pore widening process.

  • Anodic alumina layer can be used as templates for preparation of nano-structured materials, because porous oxide layer on aluminum shows a uniform pore size and a high pore density. In order to find out possibility for template material to prepare nano wire, the effects of the anodic applied potential, anodic time and the temperature of electrolyte on pore diameter of anodic alumina layer were studied using SEM and AFM. The pore diameter of anodic alumina layer increased with applied anodic potential and electrolytic temperature. Especially, the pore diameter of anodic oxide layers formed in chromic acid can be well replicated by widening process in $H_3$$PO_4$solution.

  • AlO(OH) nano gel is used in precursor of ceramic material, coating material and catalyst. For use of these, not only physiochemical control for particle morphology, pore characteristic and peptization but also studies of synthetic method for preparation of advanced application products were required. In this study, AlO(OH) nano gel was prepared through the aging and drying process of aluminum hydroxides gel precipitated by the hydrolysis reaction of dilute NaOH solution and aluminum sulfate solution. In this process, optimum synthetic condition of AlO(OH) nano gel having excellent pore volume as studying the effect of water and aluminum sulfate mole ratio on gel precipitates has been studied. Water and aluminum sulfate mole ratio brought about numerous changes on crystal morphology, surface area, pore volume and pore size. Physiochemical properties were investigated as using XRD, TEM, TG/DTA, FT-IR, and $N_2$ BET method.

  • An alumina membrane with nano-sized pore array by anodic oxidation using thin film aluminum deposited on silicon wafer was fabricated. It is important that the sample prepared by metal deposition method has a flat aluminum surface and a good adhesion between the silicon wafer and the thin film aluminum. The oxidation time was controlled by observation of current variation. While the oxalic acid with 0.2M was used for low voltage anodization under 100V, the chromic acid with 0.1M was used for high voltage anodization over 100V. The nano-sized pores with diameter of 60~120nm was obtained by low voltage anodization of 40~90V and those of 200~300nm was obtained by high voltage anodization of 120~160V. Finally, the sample was immersed to the phosphoric acid with 0.1M concentration to etching the barrier layer. The sample will be applied to electronic sensors, field emission display, and template for nano-structure.
