  • Recently, it has been studied for the application of nano-materials in the concrete. Applied a small amount of nano-materials can achieve the goal of high strength, high performance and high durability. The small addition of nano clay improves strength, thermal stability, and durability of concrete because of the excellent dispersion. The present study has investigated the effectiveness, when varying with the contents of nano clay, influencing the pull-out behavior of macro synthetic fibers in nano materials cement mortar. Pullout tests conducted in accordance with the Japan Concrete Institute (JCI) SF-8 standard for fiber-reinforced concrete test methods were used to evaluate the pullout performance of the different nano clay. Nano clay was added to the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 % of cement weight. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of nano clay led to improve the pull-out properties as of the load-displacement curve in the precracked and debonded zone. Also, the compressive strength, flexural strength and pullout performance and of Mix No. 1 and No. 2 increased up to the point when nano clay used increased by 2 and 3 % contents, respectively, but decreased when the exceeded 3 and 4 %, respectively. It was proved by verifying increase of the scratching phenomenon in macro synthetic fiber surface through the microstructure analysis on the surface of macro synthetic fiber.

  • To resolve environmental pollution caused by synthetic packaging materials, biodegradable films have been studied as an alternative. In this study, we prepared rockfish skin gelatin (RFG) and nano-clay (Cloisite $Na^+$ and Cloisite 10A) composite films to compare the effects of nano-clay on the physical properties of RFG film. Gelatin was extracted from rockfish skin and used to prepare RFG film with sorbitol as a plasticizer. Tensile strength (TS), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) of the RFG film were 15.0 MPa, $2.70{\times}10^{-9}g\;m/m^2\;s\;Pa$, and 53.8%, respectively. Addition of nano-clay to the RFG film increased TS and decreased WVP and WS. The X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopic results suggest that RFG/nano-clay composite films formed an exfoliated structure. These results indicate that RFG/nano-clay composite films can be applied as biodegradable packaging materials in the food industry.

  • To prepare the alumina cement free vibrated alumina castable, $\rho$-alumina is employed as a binder material, and nano-sized clay is added to enhance the curing strength and give thixotropic behavior. The rheological behavior of matrix of castable is controlled by investigating the influences of ultrafines, $\rho$-alumina, and nano-sized clay on the viscosity of matrix. The microsilica and ultrafine alumina were added 3 wt% and 4 wt%, respectively to the matrix, which showed that the viscosities tends to be lowest values. The rheological property of the matrix is well established by adding $\rho$-alumina as 8 wt% and clay as 4 wt%. The thixotropic behavior of the $\rho$-alumina bonded castable was appeared by introducing nano-sized clay into the matrix and adjusting the pH near to the PZC of the clay suspension.

  • The nano-clay is widely used in polymer-nanocomposites due to the high aspect ratio, heat resistance and nano-scale dimension. In recent researches, the thermal and mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were improved with introducing the nano-clay. In this study, we describe the influence of ultrasonic treatment and content of nano-clay on properties of polyurethane foam. The nano-clay/polyurethane foam were characterized using their recovery time, compressive deflection, cell morphology and tensile test. The ultrasonic treatment was very effective for dispersion of nano-clay. Moreover, we found that introducing over 3 wt% of nano-clay bring the decrease of properties due to the poor dispersion. Expecially, ultrasonically treated 20A/polyurethane foam(1 wt%) showed greatly improved properties, such as homogeneous cell size and good dimension stability. We expect that our results could be applied to insulating materials for construction.

  • In recent years, Nano-technology significantly invaded the field of Geotechnical engineering, particularly in soil stabilisation techniques. Stabilisation of weak soil is envisioned to modify various soil characteristics by the addition of natural or synthetic materials into the virgin soil. In the present study, laboratory experiments were executed to investigate the influence of nano-silica particles in the consistency limits, compressive strength of the soft clay blended with cement. The results revealed that the high compressibility behaviour of soft clay modified to medium-stiff condition with fewer dosages of cement and nano-silica. The mechanism behind the strength development is verified with the previous researches as well as from Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction test (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Based on the results, the presence of nano-silica in soft clay blended with cement has a positive effect on the behaviour of soil. This technique proves to be very economical and less detrimental to the environment.

  • Mesoporous nickel intercalated aluminosilicate nanohybrid has been synthesized through a recombination reaction between the colloidal suspension of exfoliated montmorillonite nanosheets and aqueous nickel acetate solution. According to powder X-ray diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopic analyses, the intercalation of nickel species expands significantly the basal spacing of the host montmorillonite clay and the crystallites of the intercalation compound are assembled to form a house-of-card structure. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurements with BJH pore analyses clearly demonstrated that the porosity of the intercalate originates mainly from mesopores (diameter $\sim50\;\AA$) formed by the house-of-card type stacking of clay crystallites. From FT-IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopic analyses, it becomes certain that intercalated nickel ion is stabilized in an isolated $NiO_6$ octahedral unit. The present mesoporous intercalation compound is expected to be applicable as efficient catalysts or absorbents.

  • Layered silicate was synthesized at hydrothermal condition from silica adding to various materials. Nano-clay was synthesized by intercaltion of various amine compounds into synthetic layered silicate. The products were analysed by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR in order to examine the condition of synthesis and intercalation. From the results, it was confirmed that kaolinite was synthesized from precipitated silica and gibbsite at $220^{\circ}C$ during 10 days, and hetorite was synthesized from silica sol at $100^{\circ}C$ during 48 h. Na-Magadiite was synthesized from silica gel at $150^{\circ}C$ during 72 h, and Na-kenyaite was synthesized from silica gel at $160^{\circ}C$ during 84 h. Nano-clay was prepared using synthetic layered silicate intercalated with various amine compounds. Kenyaite was easily intercalated by various organic compounds, and has the highest basal-spacing value among other layered silicates. Basal-spacing was changed according to the length of alkyl chain of amine comopounds. Polymer can be easily intercalated by dispersion with large space of interlayer. Finally, epoxy/nano-clay nanocomposite can be easily prepared.

  • This study investigates the effect of nano-silica and nano-calcite on the hydration properties and mechanical performance of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) paste. The pastes were synthesized by replacing limestone with nano-silica and nano-calcite in order to enhance the mechanical properties in both early and late stages of hydration. The nano-calcite enhanced the strength of LC3 pastes at 1 day of hydration, however, the strength decreased compared to the ordinary LC3 pastes afterwards due to excessive amount of carboaluminate produced in the pastes. On the other hand, nano-silica improved the mechanical properties of LC3 pastes at all ages of hydration. This is mainly due to the nucleation effect and pozzolanic reaction of nano-silica, affecting the early age and late ages of hydration, respectively. The nucleation effect of both nanomaterials were confirmed by the analysis of hydration heat, supporting the enhanced early age strength of nanomaterial incorporated LC3 pastes. Furthermore, the dense matrix was shown in the pore size distribution, and the increased C-S-H due to the pozzolanic reaction evidence the improved compressive and splitting tensile strength of nano-silica incorporated LC3 pastes.

  • Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAAm) containing polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) block and nano clay was obtained by the polymerization of NIPAAm and [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethyl ammonium montmorillonite(MAPTAC-MMT) with PDMS-macroinitiator. The polymer was characterized with FT-IR, XRD and DSC. The addition of PDMS in the polymers did not affect the value of the lower critical solution temperature(LCST) and the glass transition temperature($T_g$) of the PNIPAAm. However, the swelling ratio decreased with increasing PDMS contents. In the case of PNIPAAm containing nano clay, the content of MAPTAC-MMT did not affect swellability, but the $T_g$ of the PNIPAAm decreased with increasing nano clay contents.

  • Fireproofing polyolefin nanocomposite for the application of power distributing panel was prepared by compounding linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE), decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO), $Sb_2O_3$ as flame retardant agents, and modified nano clay as filler. The optimized formulation ratio of compounds to prepare the fireproofing polyolefin nanocomposite was obtained. The flame retardant properties for nanocomposite prepared by compounding 22.5 phr of nano clay and 18 phr of DBDPO based on 100 phr of LLDPE were shown that the combustion time. 10${\sim}$18 s, combustion distance, 12${\sim}$15 mm and non-melt dropping characteristics. In particular. the content of DBDPO in nanocomposite could be decreased to 18 phr from 40 phr DBDPO for fireproofing composite containing 30 phr of clay. The electrical properties measured from tracking test, had an excellent antitracking properties by not showing the phenomenon of leakage current and sparking.
