  • This paper is to develop the position error equations including the attitude errors, the errors of nadir and ship's heading, and the errors of ship's position in the free-gyro positioning and directional system. In doing so, the determination of ship's position by two free gyro vectors was discussed and the algorithmic design of the free-gyro positioning and directional system was introduced briefly. Next, the errors of transformation matrices of the gyro and body frames, i.e. attitude errors, were examined and the attitude equations were also derived. The perturbations of the errors of the nadir angle including ship's heading were investigated in each stage from the sensor of rate of motion of the spin axis to the nadir angle obtained. Finally, the perturbation error equations of ship's position used the nadir angles were derived in the form of a linear error model and the concept of FDOP was also suggested by using covariance of position error.

  • The authors aim to establish the theory necessary for developing free gyro positioning system and focus on measuring the nadir angle by using the motion rate of a free gyro. The azimuth of a gyro vector from the North can be given by using the property of the free gyro. The motion rate of the spin axis in the gyro frame is transformed into the platform frame and again into the NED (north-east-down) navigation frame. The nadir angle of a gyro vector is obtained by using the North components of the motion rate of the spin axis in the NED frame. The component has to be transformed into the horizontal component of the gyro by using the azimuth of the gyro vector and then has to be integrated over the sampling interval.

  • A low earth orbit satellite with a fixed solar array always has a sun-pointing attitude during daylight, and changes into a nadir-pointing attitude for a imaging mission. Since external heating sources to the satellite panels are Earth irradiation and Albedo during most of daylight in a sun-pointing attitude, the thermal environment condition is relatively stable. However, direct sunlight which is the greatest environmental heating has an affect on the satellite panels during a mission period (10% of one orbit) in a nadir-pointing attitude. In satellite thermal design, thermal effects of a nadir-pointing mission attitude due to this thermal environment change need to be evaluated although the duration of a nadir-pointing attitude is short. Therefore, a nadir-pointing attitude during a mission is incorporated into thermal model and by the thermal analysis result, thermal effects on the satellite are investigated.

  • Drone has been widely used for many applications ranging from amateur and leisure to professionals to get fast and accurate 3-D information of the surface of the interest. Most of commercial softwares developed for this purpose are performing automatic matching based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) or SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Features) using nadir-looking stereo image sets. Since, there are some situations where not only nadir and nadir-looking matching, but also nadir and oblique-looking matching is needed, the existing software for the latter case could not get good results. In this study, a matching experiment was performed to utilize images with differences in geometry. Nadir and oblique-looking images were acquired through drone for a total of 2 times. SIFT, SURF, which are feature point-based, and IMAS (Image Matching by Affine Simulation) matching techniques based on affine transformation were applied. The experiment was classified according to the identity of the geometry, and the presence or absence of a building was considered. Images with the same geometry could be matched through three matching techniques. However, for image sets with different geometry, only the IMAS method was successful with and without building areas. It was found that when performing matching for use of images with different geometry, the affine transformation-based matching technique should be applied.

  • General Hyperspectral Image Sensor acquires an image of line form such as a thin rectangle shape because of using 1D array Push Broom or Whisk Broom scanning method. A special mechanism is required for a Hyperspectral Image Sensor to operate for nadir and slant range. To design the mechanism, the characteristics of the flight motion and the overlap rate between consecutive frames were analyzed. Also, system requirements were proposed through modeling and simulation.

  • Helicopter-borne FMCW radar altimeter obtains the altitude information using the beat frequency between the transmitted and reflected signal from the nadir direction. However, the altitude error may exist when the strong echoes are received from the large RCS at the off-nadir direction because of the wide beamwidth of the altimeter antenna. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of the altitude error due to the large RCS around the off-nadir direction, the reflected signals were measured by using the corner reflectors displaced on the several reference ground positions, and the acquired signals were analyzed and compared in the spectral domain. The analysis results can be used for the improvement of the altitude accuracy in the radar altimeter.

  • Alterations in thyroid function test results are frequently seen in patients with nonthyroidal illness & correlate with the severity of the illness & prognosis. We studied thyroid hormone changes in 14 patients received cardiopulmonary bypass[CPB]. All patients were biochemical euthyroidism preoperatively. TSH[Thyroid Stimulating Hormone] level reached its nadir[0.46 $\pm$ 0.11 ulU/ml, P<0.0005] at 12 hours after the start of CPB & showed elevating pattern to the preoperative level thereafter. FT4[Free Thyroxine] reached to its nadir[10.16$\pm$ 1.17 pmol/L, P<0.01] at POD[Post Operative Day] #4 & reached to the preoperative level at POD #7. Mean serum TSH & FT4 concentration were within normal limits[P>0.25] during CPB & thereafter. TT3[Total Triiodothyronine] reached to its nadir[38.6 $\pm$ 8.4 ng/dl, P<0.001] at 30 minutes after the start of CPB & remained low[P<0.05] throughout the study period. The patients whose recovery was uneventful[Group I] had higher serum TSH, TT3 levels[P<0.05] than who had complications or died[Group II]. Group I showed the elevating pattern of TSH, TT3 at POD #4, but Group II failed to show such elevating pattern. In Group I, FT4 was within normal limits[P>0.5] throughout the study period, and also within normal limits[P>0.1] in Group II.

  • CNUSAIL-1, to be launched into low-earth orbit, is a cubesat-class satellite equipped with a $2m{\times}2m$ solar sail. One of CNUSAIL's missions is to deploy its solar sail system, thereby deorbiting the satellite, at the end of the satellite's life. This paper presents the design results of the attitude control system for CNUSAIL-1, which maintains the normal vector of the sail by a 3-axis active attitude stabilization approach. The normal vector can be aligned in two orientations: i) along the anti-nadir direction, which minimizes the aerodynamic drag during the nadir-pointing mode, or ii) along the satellite velocity vector, which maximizes the drag during the deorbiting mode. The attitude control system also includes a B-dot controller for detumbling and an eigen-axis maneuver algorithm. The actuators for the attitude control are magnetic torquers and reaction wheels. The feasibility and performance of the design are verified in high-fidelity nonlinear simulations.

  • Irradiation is widely used for the treatment of malignant diseases, and possibly cause the osteoporosis. The bone densitometry and bone scintigraphy are valuable when used to monitor the patients longitudinally to access the progression of osteoporosis and risk of osteoradionecrosis. To evaluate the osteoporosis after irradiation of cobalt-60 gamma ray on the lumbar spines of New Zealand white rabbits, bone densitometry by dual photon absortiometry and bone scintigraphy were performed weekly. The decrease of bone density began at the first week after irradiation, and were in the nadir at 4-6th week. The osteoblastic activity measured by bone scintigraphy decreased in the first week, and was in the nadir at 4-6th week. The severity of these changes were related to the radiation dose. In conclusion, the osteoporosis before presentation of the osteoradionecrosis can be developed at low dose irradiation and confirmed by bone densitometry, bone scanning, and histopathology.
