  • This study targets the pollutant removal of secondary effluent from final clarifiers in wastewater treatment plant using silver nanoparticles on activated carbon. The removal efficiency and treatment characteristics of pollutant are anlayzed by perfoming experiments using granular activated carbon with silver nanoparticles and ordinary granular activated carbon. The specific surface area of granular activated carbon with silver nanoparticles is smaller than that of ordinary granular activated carbon. However, the removal efficiency of $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P in experiments using activated carbon with silver nanoparticles are higher than that in experiment using ordinary granular activated carbon. That means the case of activated carbon with silver nanoparticles is much better at treatment activity. In addition, activated carbon with silver nanoparticles has antimicrobial activity because there is no microbe on the surface of it after experiments.

  • In polymer precursor based activated carbon, the structure of starting material is likely to have profound effect on the surface properties of end product. To investigate this aspect phenolic resins of different types were prepared using phenol, mcresol and formaldehyde as reactants and $Et_3N$ and $NH_4OH$ as catalyst. Out of these resins two resol resins PFR1 and CFR1 (prepared in excess of formaldehyde using $Et_3N$ as catalyst in the basic pH range) were used as raw materials for the preparation of activated carbons by both chemical and physical activation methods. In chemical activation process both the resins gave activated carbons with high surface areas i.e. 2384 and 2895 $m^2/g$, but pore size distribution in PFR1 resin calculated from Horvath-Kawazoe method, contributes mainly in micropore range i.e. 84.1~88.7 volume percent of pores was covered by micropores. Whereas CFR1 resin when activated with KOH for 2h time, a considerable amount (32.8%) of mesopores was introduced in activated carbon prepared. Physical activation with $CO_2$ leads to the formation of activated carbon with a wide range of surface area (503~1119 $m^2/g$) with both of these resins. The maximum pore volume percentage was obtained in 3-20 ${\AA}$ region by physical activation method.

  • Activated carbon has lower electrical conductivity and reliability than other carbonaceous materials because of the oxygen functional groups that form during the activation process. This problem can be overcome by doping the material with heteroatoms to reduce the number of oxygen functional groups. In the present study, N, F co-doped activated carbon (AC-NF) was successfully prepared by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, utilizing commercial activated carbon (AC-R) as the precursor and ammonium tetrafluoroborate as the single source for the co-doping of N and F. AC-NF showed improved electrical conductivity ($3.8\;S\;cm^{-1}$) with N and F contents of 0.6 and 0.1 at%, respectively. The introduction of N and F improved the performance of the pertinent supercapacitor: AC-NF exhibited an improved rate capability at current densities of $0.5-50mA\;cm^{-2}$. The rate capability was higher compared to that of raw activated carbon because N and F codoping increased the electrical conductivity of AC-NF. The developed method for the co-doping of N and F using a single source is cost-effective and yields AC-NF with excellent electrochemical properties; thus, it has promising applications in the commercialization of energy storage devices.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of surface-treatment by zinc salts on break-through and adsorption capacity of toluene. Firstly, the coconut activated carbon treated the surface with zinc salts, were exposed by the spike sample(toluene, 69.02ppm, $260.1mg/m^3$), and then the effects of zinc salts were examined by using the gas adsorption kinetics. The results obtained were as follows : 1) BET(Brumaure Emmett Teller) surface area were $954.4m^3/g$ in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$ $6H_2O$, and $830.3m^2/g$ in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$. 2) Migration was decreased in coconut activated carbon treated with the thin level of zinc salts. 3) Breakthrough volume were 73.07 L in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$ $6H_2O$, and 72.76 L in charcoal treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$. 4) ${\tau}$ values(the time required for 50% breakthrough) were 1046.1 min in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$ and 921.2 min in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$ $6H_2O$. 5) Maximum adsorption capacity was 53.9 mg/tube in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$ and 47.4 mg/tube in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$ $6H_2O$. In conclusion, the coconut activated carbon treated the surface with the thin concentration of zinc salts, decreased the breakthrough and increased the BET surface area and the adsorption capacity in case of sampling airborne toluene.

  • Commercially available activated carbon was treated with 0.2N NaOH/0.1N HCl to decrease the ash contents and to analyze the effect of demineralization. We have studied their properties and adsorptivity to solvents such as benzene, acetone, toluene and carbon tetrachloride, ammonia and also aldehydes of cigarette smoke. By demineralization with NaOH/HCl, surface area and pore volume were increased up to 10 - 20% according to developement of micro-pore and pH of activated carbon was also changed from 10.2 to 6.3. Surface acidity of the activated carbon treated with chemicals increased slightly. The chemical treatment led to small increase in adsorptioil properties of solvents, ammonia and aldehydes of cigarette smoke, but content of chlorine and sulfur in activated carbon were reduced. As the results of smoking test, charcoal taste caused by the activated carbon was reduced significantly by the treatment with NaOH/HCl.

  • The adsorption and reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by surface modified activated carbon (AC) in an aqueous solution was studied. The effects of surface modifications on the properties of the carbons were investigated by the analysis of specific surface area, carbon surface pH, acid/base surface values and functional groups. In order to understand the Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction ratio from Cr(VI) to Cr(III), the Cr adsorption capacity of AC was also measured and discussed by using inductively coupled plasma and UV spectrophotometer. The modifications bring about substantial variation in the chemical properties whereas the physical properties such as specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution nearly were not changed. Total Cr adsorption efficiency of as-received activated carbon (R-AC) and nitric acid treated activated carbon (N1-AC and N2-AC) were recorded on 98.2, 99.7 and 100%. Cr(III) reduction efficiency of R-AC increased largely from 0.4% to 28.3% compared to N1-AC and N2-AC.

  • A study of the treatment of piggery wastes using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration was carried out at bench scale. From the physicochemical properties obtained from samples treated with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as Ag$^+$, Cu$^{2+}$, Na$^{-}$, K$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$, main inspections are subjected to isothem shape, pore distribution with micropore, SEM and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted to waste water to inwestigate the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. From these removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was derermined by the properties of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.

  • Composite adsorbents were prepared by mixing water plant sludge with phenolic resin having the ratio of 1 : 1, 1 : 2, and 1 : 3 respectively, curing from $100^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere, and then activating with $N_2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. Thermal property, specific surface area and morphology of the composite adsorbents as well as their precursors were measured by TGA, BET and SEM respectively. Removal efficiency of the composite adsorbents to ${NH_4}^+$ and TOC was compared with those of commercial zeolite and activated carbon. The adsorbents presented very promising TOC removal efficiency of 98%, which was identical level to that of commercial activated carbon while they displayed removal efficiency, only 32%, of ${NH_4}^+$. Therefore, this composite adsorbent considered as the alternative material of commercial activated carbon, used as an expensive removal agent of organic substances and THM in water treatment plant and it also suggested a possibility of practical application in other processes.
