The objective of this study was investigate the characteristic of biosurfactant produced from the iso-lated strain. The strain was isolated from soli samples of Duck-Yu Mountain and it was identified as Bacillus atrophaeus DYL-130 by 16S rDNA and gyrA gene nucleotide sequence analysis. The surface ten-sion of culture filtrate of Bacillus atrophaeus DYL-130 decreased to 28 mN/m and its biosurfactant con-centration was determined by diluting the culture filtrate until the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The emulsifying activity and stability of crude biosurfactant was measured by using water-immiscible hydrocarbons and oils as substrate. The biosurfactant was purified by affinity chromatography and the surface activity of purified biosurfactant was measured by drop-collapsing method and it could be effectively emulsify toluene.
This study evaluated the concentrations of urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrial waste incineration workers. The effect of genetic polymorphisms of xenobiotic metabolism enzymes on urinary concentration of PAH metabolites was assessed. And, aromatic DNA adduct levels were also determined in total white blood cells. Fifty employees were recruited from a company handling industrial wastes located in Ansan, Korea: non-exposed group (n=21), exposed group (n=29). Sixteen ambient PAHs were determined by GC/MSD (NIOSH method) from personal breathing zone samples of nine subjects near incinerators. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene glucuronide (1-OHPG), a major pyrene metabolite, was assayed by synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy after immunoaffinity purification using monoclonal antibody 8E11 (SFS/IAC). Multiplex PCR was used for genotyping for GSTMI/TI and PCR-RFLP for genotyping of CYP1A1 (MspI and Ile/Val). PAH-DNA adducts in peripheral blood WBC were measured by the nuclease P1-enhanced postlabeling assay. Smoking habit, demographic and occupational information were collected by self-administered questionnaire. The range of total ambient PAH levels were 0.00-7.00 mg/㎥ (mean 3.31). Urinary 1-OHPG levels were significantly higher in workers handling industrial wastes than in those with presumed lower exposure to PAHs (p=0.006, by Kruskal-Wallis test). There was a statistically significant dose-response increase in 1-OHPG levels with the number of cigarettes consumed per day (Pearson correlation coefficient=0.686, p<0.001). Urinary 1-OHPG levels in occupationally exposed smoking workers were highest compared with non-occupationally exposed smokers (p=0.053, by Kruskal-Wallis test). Smoking and GSTMI genotype were significant predictors for log-transformed 1-OHPG by multiple regression analysis (overall model R²=0.565, p<0.001), whereas smoking was the only significant predictor for log-transformed aromatic DNA adducts (overall model R²=0.249, p=0.201). Aromatic DNA adducts was also a significantly correlation between log transferred urinary 1-OHPG levels (pearson's correlation coefficient=0.307, p=0.04). However, the partial correlation coefficient adjusting for Age, Sex, and cigarette consumption was not significant (r=0.154, p=0.169). The significant association exists only in individuals with the GSTMI null genotype (pearsons correlation coefficient=0.516, p=0.010; partial correlation coefficient adjusting for age, sex, and cigarette consumption, r=0.363, p=0.038). Our results suggest that the significant increase in urinary 1-OHPG in the exposed workers is due to higher prevalence of smokers among them, and that the association between urinary PAH metabolites and aromatic DNA adducts in workers of industrial waste handling may be modulated by GSTMI genotype. There results remain to be confirmed in future larger studies.
Volatile flavor components in powdered Katsuobushi were simultaneous trapped by steam distillation-extraction method, and these were fractionated into the neutral, the phenolic, the acidic and the basic fraction. Volatile flavor components in these fraction were analyzed by the high-resolution GC and GC-MS equipped with a fused silica capillary column. The whole steam volatile concentrate consisted of $48\%$ neutral fraction(NF), $35\%$ phenolic fraction(PF), $12\%$ acidic fraction(AF) and $5\%$ basic fraction(BF). Thirty components such as 8 hydrocarbons, 8 aldehydes, 6 furans, 5 alcohols and 3 ketones were identified from NF. And sixteen components such as phenol, guaiacol, dimethoxy phenol, eugenol in PF, twelve components such as propionic, butanoic, isopentanoic, n-hexanoic, heptanoic, octanoic acid in AF, ten components such as 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, 2-nethylpyridine, 2,4-dimethylthiaBole in BF were identified. NF and PF gave a much higher yield than others and were assumed to be indispensable for the reproduction of aroma of powdered Katsuobushi. It was also identified eight components of volatile carbonyl compounds such as ethanal, propanal, butanal, pentanal by 2,4-DNPH method.

In this study, fluidized-bed pyrolysis has been conducted in order to recover the bitumen contained in the oil sand. Canada Alberta oil sand contains 11.9% of bitumen and the bitumen-derived heavy oil produced in fluidizedbed tends to be upgraded relative to the bitumen. The continuous operation has been performed using $N_2$ as a fluidization gas at 1 atm and $500^{\circ}C$ in a reactor of 170 cm height. The results showed 87.76% of bitumen conversion, where liquid products are 74.45% and gas products are 13.31%. $H_2$, $O_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and NO and $C_1{\sim}C_4$ hydrocarbons in the gas products were analyzed by on-line gas analyzer and gas chromatography, respectively. The pyrolysis oil was analyzed by using proximate analysis, heavy metal analysis, SIMDIS, asphaltenes, and heating value. By SIMDIS analysis, naphtha was 11.50%, middle distillation was 44.83% and heavy oil was 43.66%. It was obvious that the pyrolysis oil was upgraded compared with bitumens.
Much progress has been made in understanding the subcellular events of the human lung injuries after acute exposure to environmental air pollutants. Host of those events represent oxidative damages mediated by reactive oxygen species such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and the hydroxy, free radical. Recently, nitric oxide (NO) was found to be endogenously produced by endothelial cells and cells of the reticulo-endothelial system as endothelialderived relaxation factor (EDRF) which is a vasoactive and neurotransmitter substance. Together with superoxide, NO can form another strong oxidant, peroxonitrite. The relative importance of exogenous sources of $N0/N0_2$ and endogenous production of NO by the EDRF producing enzymes in the oxidative stresses to the heman lung has to be elucidated. The exact events leading to chronic irreversible damage are still yet to be known. From chronic exposure to oxidant gases, progressive epithelial and interstitial damages develop. Type I epithelial cells become thicker and cover a smaller average alveolar surface area while thee II cells proliferate instead. Under acute damages, the extent of loss of the alveolar epithelial cell lining, especially type II cells appears to be a good predictor of the ensuing irreversible damage to alveolar compartment. Interstitial matrix undergo remodeling during chronic exposure with increased collagen fibers and interstitial fibroblasts. However, Inany of these changes can be reversed after cessation of exposure. Among chronic lung injuries, genetic damages and repair responses received particular attention in view of the known increased lung cancer risks from exposure to several air pollutants. Heavy metals from foundry emission, automobile traffics, and total suspended particulate, especially polycystic aromatic hydrocarbons have been positively linked with the development of lung cancer. Asbestos in another air pollutant with known risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma, but asbestos fibers are nonauthentic in most bioassays. Studies using the electron spin resonance spin trapping method show that the presence of iron in asbestos accelerates the production of the hydroxy, radical in vitro. Interactions of these reactive oxygen species with particular cellular components and disruption of cell defense mechanisms still await further studies to elucidate the carcinogenic potential of asbestos fibers of different size and chemical composition. The distribution of inhaled pollutants and the magnitude of their eventual effects on the respiratory tract are determined by pollutant-independent physical factors such as anatomy of the respiratory tract and level and pattern of breathing, as well as by pollutant-specific phyco-chemical factors such as the reactivity, solubility, and diffusivity of the foreign gas in mucus, blood and tissue. Many of these individual factors determining dose can be quantified in vitro. However, mathematical models based on these factors should be validated for its integrity by using data from intact human lungs.

In this paper we studied about Bacillus sp. TBM40-3 producing biosurfactants. The strains were isolated from Taeback Mountain soil and identified as Bacillus sp. by l6S rDNA nucleotides sequence analysis. The TBM40-3 was gram-positive and rod-shaped as observed by field emission scanning microscopy. After the cultivation TBM40-3 in LB broth for 90 h and the surface tension of supernatant was decreased to 29 mN/m. Emulsification activity and stability of crude biosurfactant was measured by using water-immiscible hydrocarbons and oil as substrate. Maximum emulsification activity and stability was obtained from soybean oil. Also, we confirmed that the TBM40-3 producing biosurfactant had an effect on crude oil while showing a superior effect as compared to chemically synthesized surfactants (SDS, Span85, Tween40, Triton X-100). As a result, the Bacillus sp. TBM40-3 producing biosurfactant had potent properties as an emulsifying agent and an emulsion stabilizing agent.
Compare with volatile organic compounds from unirradiated and irradiated dried-red pepper that is representative spice of korea. Volatile compounds from unirradiated and irradiated dried-red pepper were extracted using simultaneous distillation-extraction(SDE) apparatus and analyzed by Gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS). A total of 61 and 62 compounds were identified from unirradiated and irradiated dried red pepper at dose of 10 kGy. These compounds included alcohols, aldehydes, furans, hydrocarbons, ketones, N-containing compounds, terpenes and micellaneous compounds. Furfural, benzaldehyde, linalool, nerolidol, ${\alpha}$-curcumene, ${\alpha}$-zingibirene were detected as the major volatile compounds from dried-red pepper. Specially, 1,3-bis[1,1-dimethylethyl]-benzene was confirmed as a marker of irradiated dried-red pepper because is not detected in unirraiatied dried-red pepper.
The remediation efficiency for a large scale petroleum-contaminated site was evaluated by using the Engineered Land-farming system which was consists of the following parameters; moisture & nutrient injector data, blower system, HDPE sheet and sump system. To enhance the degradation ability in the early stage, main nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were adjusted for the site condition. As a result of the periodic tilling process, the concentration of contaminated soil was decreased to 348 mg/kg, which was lower than 500 mg/kg (regal standards) while satisfying remediation Efficiency of 82% (the maximum concentration of 1,893 mg/kg). The appropriate temperature range for an active operation was investigated between $28.9{\sim}35.6^{\circ}C$. For the contaminated soils having different initial concentration, the TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) concentration was decreased evenly along with the CFU (Colony Forming Unit), moisture content and contaminant concentration after 38days of gratifying the legal standards of under 500 mg/kg.

The concentration levels and distribution characteristics of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated and evaluated for total 100 soil samples as a part of the survey on soil contamination in Gwangju. The results (median and range) of T-PAHs (sum of 16 PAH concentrations), C-PAHs (sum of carcinogenic PAH concentrations) and T-TEQs (sum of 16 TEQ concentrations) were 20.8 (7.6~1158.1), 2.2 (N.D~509.6), and 0.3 (N.D~424.6) ㎍/kg, respectively. There was a positive correlation between C-PAHs/T-PAHs and T-TEQs/T-PAHs except one point where the concentration of benzo(a)pyrene was high. The ratios of the C-PAHs/T-PAHs were 31.7% for low molecular weight-PAHs and 68.3% for high molecular weight-PAHs, suggesting that PAHs generation mainly arose from combustion sources. The ratio of isomers of individual PAHs, Phe/Ant, Flu/Pyr, Ant/(Ant+Phe), Flu/(Flu+Pyr), and BaA/(BaA+Chr), also confirmed the predominance of PAHs from combustion activities. Statistical tracing of the source of PAHs through principal component analysis indicated that the main sources of combustion were automobile fuel and coal. The overall results of this study suggested HMW-PAHs, T-PAHs, C-PAHs and T-TEQs should be separately evaluated to better assess the toxicity and environmental behavior of individual PAHs.
Illite-smectite mixed layers (I-S) occurring authigenically in diagenetic and hydrothermal environments reacts toward more illite-rich phases as temperature and potassium ion concentration increase. For that reason, I-S is often used as geothermometry and/or geochronometry at the field of hydrocarbons or ore minerals exploration. Generally, I-S shows X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns of ultra-thin lamellar structures, which consist of restricted numbers of sillicate layers (normally, 5 ~ 15 layers) stacked in parallel to a-b planes. This ultra-thinness is known to decrease I-S expandability (%S) rather than theoretically expected one (short-stacking effect). We attempt here to quantify the short stacking effect of I-S using the difference of two types of expandability: one type is a maximum expandability ($%S_{Max}$) of infinite stacks of fundamental particles (physically inseparable smallest units), and the other type is an expandability of finite particle stacks normally measured using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) ($%S_{XRD}$). Eleven I-S samples from the Geumseongsan volcanic complex, Uiseong, Gyeongbuk, have been analyzed for measuring $%S_{XRD}$ and average coherent scattering thickness (CST) after size separation under 1 ${\mu}m$. Average fundamental particle thickness ($N_f$) and $%S_{Max}$ have been determined from $%S_{XRD}$ and CST using inter-parameter relationships of I-S layer structures. The discrepancy between $%S_{Max}$ and $%S_{XRD}$ (${\Delta}%S$) suggests that the maximum short-stacking effect happens approximately at 20 $%S_{XRD}$, of which point represents I-S layer structures consisting of ca. average 3-layered fundamental particles ($N_f{\approx}3$). As a result of inferring the $%S_{XRD}$ range of each Reichweite using the $%S_{XRD}$ vs. $N_f$ diagram of Kang et al. (2002), we can confirms that the fundamental particle thickness is a determinant factor for I-S Reichweite, and also that the short-stacking effect shifts the $%S_{XRD}$ range of each Reichweite toward smaller $%S_{XRD}$ values than those that can be theoretically prospected using junction probability.
