  • Experiments were performed to study freezing on a finned vertical tube when either conduction in the solid or natural convection in a liquid controls the heat transfer. Conduction is the controlling mode when the liquid is at its fusion temperature, whereas natural convection controls when the liquid temperature is above the fusion value. The liquid was housed in a cylinderical containment vessel whose surface was maintained at a uniform, time-invariment temperature during a data run, and the freezing occurred on a finned vertical tube positioned along the axis of the vessel. The phase change medium was n-octacosan, a paraffin which freezes at about $61^{\circ}C$. For conduction-controlled freezing, the enhancement of the frozen mass due to finning is greatest when the frozen layer is thin and decrease as the layer grows thicker. The degree of enhancement is generally less than the surface area ratio of the finned and unfinned tube.

  • Wear and wear transition mechanisms during sliding as a function of time in Al2O3 have been studied to understand the wear behaviour of brittle ceramic materials. Commercial Si3N4 ball was rotated against flat Al2O3 specimens which were hot pressed and polished using upto 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diamond paste. Paraffin oil was used as a lubricant. Experimental data show that wear of Al2O3 is separated into distinct two stages, i.e., initial stage of slow wear and final stage of rapid wear. Microstructural observations at worn surface show that wear occurs through grooving and grain pull-out in the initial and final stage respectively. TEM observations beneath the worn surfaces show that grain pull-out starts to occur by the propagation of grain boundary cracks induced by dislocation pile-up throughthe surface.

  • This paper focuses on the investigation of the heat transfer phenomena that occur inside the cylindrical tube. The inclination of the tube is adopted as a principal parameter varying from vertical to horizontal. The phase change material employed in this experiment is 99 percent pure n-docosane paraffin($C_{22}$ $H_{46}$). It is found that the amount of solidified mass during a prescribed solidifying period is not sensitive to the inclination of the tube but to the local layer thickness. It is studied that the latent energy is the largest contributor to the total extracted energy. The sensible energy($E_{s1}$, $E_{s2}$, $E_{s3}$) may not be negligible at the large wall-subcooling and initial-liquid-superheating, also at the first step of solidifying.

  • Olefin/paraffin separation by the facilitated transport membrane using silver salts as carriers has been considered as a promising alternative to the conventional energy intensive distillation process. The basis for the separation is the ability of silver ions to react reversibly with olefin forming silver-olefin complexes.(omitted)

  • Nafion supported catalytic membranes were found to be active, stable and selective in th partial oxidation of propane to oxygenates with H2O2 under mild condition. Addition of Fe2+ in liquid phase enhances the reaction rate. Reaction proceeds according to a radical mechanism based on th electrophilic activation of propane on superacid sites and subsequent reaction of the activated paraffin with OH radicals. The use of a catalytic membrane, which allow separation of the intermediate products from the liquid phase containing the oxidant, was found to be effective to perform selective partial oxidation of propane with high yields to oxygenated products.

The liquid was housed in a cylindrical containment vessel whose surface was maintained at a uniform, time-invariment temperature during a data run, and the solidification occurred at a finned and unfinned vertical tube positioned along the axis of the vassel. The phase change material(PCM) employed in this experiment is 99 percent pure n-Octacosan paraffin($C -{28}H_{58}/$). It is studied that the latent energy($E_{\lambda}$) is the largest contributor to the total extracted energy($E_{\lambda} + E_{sl}+E_{s2}$) and the total extracted energy rate at a finned vertical tube is greater than that at a unfinned vertical tube.

  • A new test system was established to measure the flame extinguishing concentration of Halon alternatives. The main characteristic of this system is to use the solid paraffin with a wick instead of liquid fuel, such as n-Heptane. Our results showed that the extinguishing concentration of compounds was lower than that of other existing data, but the trend was consistent with others. The flame extinguishing concentration of all tested compounds were not almost effected by gas flow velocity. The system produces good reliable data with a minimum error for measuring the flame extinguishing concentration. Therefore our new system can be utilized as a standard equipment to evaluate Halon alternatives.

  • Heat transfer phenomena during inward melting and solidification process of the phase change material were studied expertimentally. The phase change medium was 99% pure n-docosane paraffin ($C_{22}H_{46}$). The solid-liquid interface motion during phase change was recorded photographically. Measurements were made on the temperature, the solid-liquid interface, the melted or frozen mass and the various energy components stored or extracted from the cylinder wall. For melting, the experimental results reaffirmed the dominant role played by the conduction at an early stage, by the natural convection at longer time. For solidification, natural convection effects in the superheated liquid were modest and were confined to short freezing time. Although the latent energy is the largest contributor to the total stored or extracted energy, the aggregate sensible energies can make a significant contribution, especially at large cylinder wall superheating or subcooling, large initial phase change material subcooling or superheating.

  • Background: K-RAS and N-RAS gene mutations cause resistance to treatment in patients with colorectal cancer. Based on this, awareness of mutation of these genes is considered a clinically important step towards better diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Materials and Methods: Fifty paraffin-embedded blocks of colorectal cancer were obtained from Imam Reza Hospital of Birjand, Iran. Following DNA extraction, the samples were analyzed for common mutations of exons 2, 3 and 4 of KRAS and NRAS genes using real time PCR and pyrosequencing. Results: According to this study, the prevalence of mutations was respectively 28% (14 out of 50) and 2% (1 out of 50) in KRAS and NRAS genes. All the mutations were observed in patients >50 years old. Conclusions: Mutations were found in both KRAS and NRAS genes in colorectal cancers in Iranian patients. Determining the frequency of these mutations in each geographical region may be necessary to benefit from targeted cancer therapy.

  • A mathematical model was proposed to describe the behavior of the liquid emulsion membrane(LEM) conraining sodium carbonate as internal stripping reagent. Experimental results of the batch extraction of lactic acid were compared with computed results by using the model. it was found that the model computations could predict fairly well the effects of parameter variations such as the carrier concentration, the stripping reagent concentration, the stirrer speed and the treatment ratio. An attempt has been made to reduce emulsion swelling which is one of the main problem of LEM. As the additives for swelling control, liquid paraffin, n-decanol, cyclohexanone and Span 85 were used. All the additives that were investigated tend to reduce the quantity of swelling to some extent. Cyclohexanone was found not only to reduce the swelling but also to increase largely the acid transport rate.
