The Mesozoic leucocratic granite in the northeastern margin of the Taebaeksan Basin was transformed to protomylonite and mylonite. Mylonitic foliations generally strike to NWWNW and dip to NE with the development of a sinistral strike-slip (top-to-the-northwest) shear sense. Grain-size reduction of feldspar in the mylonitized leucocratic granite occurred due to fracturing, myrmekite formation and neocrystallization of albitic plagioclase along the shear fractures of K-feldspar porphyroclasts. As the deformation proceeded, compositional layering consisting of feldspar-, quartz- and/or muscovite-rich layers developed in the mylonite. In the feldspar-rich layer, fine-grained albitic plagioclase and interstitial K-feldspar were deformed dominantly by granular flow. On the other hand, quartz-rich layers containing core-mantle and quartz ribbons structures were deformed by dislocation creep. Based on calculations from conventional two-feldspar and ternary feldspar geothermometers, mylonitization temperatures of the leucocratic granite range from 360 to $450^{\circ}C$. It thus indicates that the mylonitization has occurred under greenschist-facies conditions. Based on the geochemical features and previous chronological data, the leucocratic granite was emplaced during the Middle Jurassic at volcanic arc setting associated with crustal thickening. And then the mylonitization of the granite occurred during the late Middle to Late Jurassic (150-165 Ma). Therefore, the mylonitization of the Jurassic granitoids in the Taebaeksan Basin was closely related to the development of the Honam shear zone.
The older granitic rocks of the study area are composed of mainly orthogneiss and foliated granite. These rocks shows mostly mortar or fiaser structure by strong mylonitization and thermal metamorphism during several orogenies. $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ incremental·release ages of these rocks have been determined for 6 hornblende. 7 muscovite and 4 biotite concentrates separated from rocks collected across the Ryeongnam massif. Most $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ age are discordant with Rb-Sr whole rock age of the same area. These ages range from 1998 to 172Ma. This discordant age is interpreted to indicate that samples were in contact with Daebo granite body that was characterized by large and variable $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ ratios. Such ratios most likely resulted from widespread diffusion of the argon liberated from older granitic rocks during several metamorphic overprint. The general trend of the chemical composition of these rocks suggest that most of them are some series of differentiated products by fractional crystallization.
Rock structural and microstructural analyses on the deformed Cheongsan granite, which is characterized by abundant feldspar megacrystals, have been carried out to understand the microstructural change during the mylonitization by ductile shear deformation. In K-feldspars, the characteristic microstructures are recognized as microkinks, microfractures, myrmekites, flame perthites, and core-and-mantle structures without the development of subgrains in outer core-zone. Microkinks are observed in both the microfractured and unmicrofractured K-feldspars and the directions of their axes are generally extended across the adjacent K-feldspar fragments bounded by microfractures. Myrmekites and flame perthites are found on the strain-localized boundaries of the microfractured K-feldspars. In plagiclases, microfractures, deformation twins and kink bands are predominant. Grain size reduction of plagioclase megacrysts also occurs by microfracturing but the core-and-mantle structures like the case of K-feldspars are uncommon in the microfractured plagioclases. The deformation twins, which overlap the igneous zoning structures, are often found in less deformed rocks. The twin lamellae in more deformed rocks generally bisect the obtuse angles of conjugate kink-band boundaries, and are microfractured or microfaulted and randomly oriented. From such characteristic microstructures, thus, it can be suggested that the micostructures during the mylonitzation of Cheongsan granite was developed as follows: production of microkinks in the K-feldspar megacrysts and of deformation twins and kink bands in the plagioclase megacrysts, and then grain-size reduction of the feldspar megacrysts through microfracturing, and then production of core-and-mantle structures (grain-size reduction of the microfractured K-feldspars through grain boundary migration), myrmekites and flame perthites in the microfractured K-feldspars.
Geochemical study was conducted to elucidate the origin of fluorine (F) distributed in the rocks within the four areas of Yongyudo and Sammokdo, Incheon, which have been used as the source area of land reclamation for the $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ stage construction sites of the Incheon International Airport. The main geology of the study area is Triassic biotite granite. Fluorine is contained at high levels in biotite granite, mylonite, and dykes (andesite and, basaltic-andesite). Furthermore, the higher concentrations of fluorine in the biotite granite can be contributed to fluorite. The results of microscopic analyses reveal that the fluorite was mostly observed as small vienlets together with quartz. This features support that fluorite was naturally formed due to the secondary process of hydrothermal fluids. In addition, fluorine was investigated to be highly enriched in a large amount of mica within the veins. In the case of mylonite, a high levels of fluorine was contributed to a large amount of sericite. The sericites contained in the mylointe, differently to those of the biotite granite, filled the micro-fractures of quartz formed as a result of mylonitization and included small cataclastic quartz grains. This indicates that fluorine was naturally enriched due to the alteration of hydrothermal fluids filling fractured zones formed by mylonitization. Consequently, the results of petrological and mineralogical study confirm that the fluorine distributed in the rocks within the Yongyudo and Sammokdo originated naturally.
The K-Ar ages of a sericite quartz schist in the lower Jangsan Formation along the Okdong fault zone reported by Yun (1983) have attracted attention again because of their potential to constrain the depositional timing of the Jangsan Formation. The oldest age of $562{\pm}2Ma$ among three reported K-Ar ages in the schist led to the claim that the depositional period of the lowermost Jangsan Formation in the Joseon Supergroup is late Neoproterozoic. Its depositional age is important for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula including the formation and evolution histories of its sedimentary basins. Thus, the reliability and geological meaning of three K-Ar ages in the original paper (Yun, 1983) were revisited in the review. Quartz grains in the analyzed sample contain a considerable amount of excess Ar, and therefore it is inappropriate to use the ages as a basis for a depositional age constraint of the Jangsan Formation. The timing of mylonitization in the schist is recalculated as ~170 Ma.
The CHIME (chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method) dating on monazite was carried out for two foliated granites from a dextral ductile shear zone in the vicinity of Gangjin area, which is considered to be a southern extension of Sunchang shear zone. The result gives emplacement age of the medium-grained biotite granite and the coarse-grained biotite granite as $183.6{\pm}2.2Ma$(MSWD=0.21) and $171.7{\pm}4.0Ma$(MSWD=0.57), respectively. Microtextures of quartz and feldspar observed in the foliated granite are almost identical with those reported in Jurassic (ca 180 Ma) foliated granites from the Imsil-Namwon area of the Sunchang shear zone, and they constraint that the ductile deformation took place at temperature condition of $300{\sim}550^{\circ}C$. Assuming cooling curves of the foliated granites in this study are similar with those of Jurassic foliated granites from Imsil-Namwon area, dextral ductile shear in the Gangjin area would take place between 172 Ma and 150 Ma, about 10 Ma later than the previous estimation based on CHIME monazite ages.
Nearly NS-trending Fe-Ti ore bodies intermittently occur in the Hadong anorthosites, south Korea, irrespective of the rock types of the anorthosites. In order to determine their occurrence mode and deformation history, we collected the features of occurrence and geological structures in the field, petrographic features using thin sections of the principal constituent rocks, and geochemical data of ilmenites in the ore body using electron probe microanalysis. Fe-Ti ore bodies examined in this study are divided into two types: dike- and lamina-types. It is steadily supported that the dike-type has intruded into the anorthositic rocks after their emplacement and solidification. And the laminar-type is probably a result of the mylonitization and transposition of the dike-type ore bodies parallel to the shear planes, due to later strong dextral ductile shearing. In the meantime, the Fe-Ti ore bodies have experienced the stronger dextral shearing in the more northern part of the study area, i.e. Cheongryong-ri, Wolhoeng-ri, Jonghwa-ri, and Jayangri and Baekun-ri in ascending order of its strength, together with the less content of $TiO_2$. All ilmenites of the ore bodies have very similar chemical composition, as pure ilmenite of 52~55 wt.% in $TiO_2$ content, irrespective of the occurrence mode and degree of later ductile shearing of the ore bodies. And they didn't experience to exsolve into magnetite. The structural data indicate that the Hadong anorthosites have deformed by NNE-trending folding, intrusion of the Fe-Ti ore bodies, NNW~NNE-trending dextral ductile shearing, NW~NNW-trending sinistral semi-brittle shearing, and intrusion of NNE~NE-trending mafic dykes in descending order of chronology after the formation of foliation of the anorthositic rocks. The foliation is interpreted as a result of the accumulation of crystals that settle out from the magma by the action of gravity.
Characteristics and complex structures in the northwest Nevada, U.S.A. are de-veloped due to relative tectonic movement of major tectonostratigraphic terranes. Theresearch area is composed of autochthonous rocks of both Early Triassic Koipato Group and Middle Triassic Star Peak Group, which is located in the Humboldt Range, northwest Nevada, U.S.A. The present research is focused on deformation history, related fabric development, and state of regional paleostress during the Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. The Triassic autochthonous rocks in the Humboldt Range, Nevada, U.S.A. display polyphase deformation due to E- to ESE-directed tectonic transport of the Fencemaker allochthon over autochthonous rocks of the Humboldt Range. Structures involving the Mesozoic foreland deformation are development of intense foliation, different styles of folds, minor thrusts, transposed layering, and strong mylonitization. These tectonic structures are mostly developed along the western flank of the Humboldt Range, and are reported as the first deformation of the Mesozoic foreland in the Humboldt Range, Nevada, U.S.A. Regional principal stress(${\sigma}_1$) is interpreted to be E to ESE between the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous on the basis of orientations of strongly developed $D_1$ structures. The deformation during the Middle to Late Cretaceous, is characterized by development of consistent N- to NNE-trending metamorphic quartz veins, and shear zones parallel to pre-existing $D_1$ foliation. Orientations of metamorphic quartz veins as well as other kinematic indicators are N to NNE and are interpreted as those of regional principal stress(${\sigma}_1$) during the Late Cretaceous. The sense of shear applied in the Humbololt Range is dextral and is caused by reactivation of early-formed $D_1$ structures. These results reflect counterclockwise rotation of regional principal paleostress in the Humboldt Range from the Jurassic to Late cretaceous. Finally, development of both shear band cleavage and S/C mylonitic fabrics indicates that the shear zones in the Humboldt Range reflect involvement of enhanced non-coaxial flow during bulk shortening in mylonitic formation.
The study area, which is located in the southeastern part of the Jirisan province, Yeongnam massif, Korea, is mainly composed of the Precambrian Hadong southern anorthosite complex (HSAC), the Jirisan metamorphic rock complex (JMRC) and Cretaceous sedimentary rock which unconformably covers them. Lithofacies distribution of the Precambrian constituent rocks mainly shows NS and partly NE trends. This paper researched deformational phased structural characteristics of HSAC and JMRC based on the geometric and kinematic features and the forming sequence of multi-deformed rock structures, and suggests that the geological structures of this area was formed through at least three phases of ductile deformation. The first phase ($D_1$) of deformation happened due to the large-scale top-to-the SE shearing, and formed the sheath or "A"-type fold and the regional tectonic frame of NE trend in the HSAC and JMRC. The second phase ($D_2$) of deformation, like the $D_1$ deformation, regionally occurred under the EW-directed tectonic compression, and most of the NE-trending $D_1$ tectonic frame was reoriented into NS trend by the active and passive folding, and the persistent and extensive ductile shear zone (Hadong shear zone) with no less than 2.3~1.4 km width was formed along the eastern boundary of HSAC and JMRC through the mylonitization process. The third phase ($D_3$) of deformation occurred under the NS-directed tectonic compression, and partially reoriented the pre-$D_3$ structural elements into ENE or WNW direction. It means that the distribution of Precambrian lithofacies showing NE trend locally and NS trend widely in this area is closely associated with the $D_1$ and $D_2$ deformations, respectively, and the NS-trending Hadong shear zone in the eastern part of Hadong northern anorthosite complex, which is located in the north of Deokcheon River, also extends into the HSAC with continuity.
