  • This article defines sijo's musicality in two ways and verifies how musicality is shown in modern sijo with some examples. First, the first metre of a song's fourth part, that is, the sijo's jongjang, should include a reverse of its poetic image. A song consists of five parts. Each part is sung as a part of the song, that is, the sijo's dimetre, trimetre, or tetrametre, but its fourth part is sung as the monometre which is the first metre of its jongjang. This is because the first metre of a sijo's jongjang forms the axis of the reverse in its poetic image, and when this works properly, it can maintain musicality as a sijo. Second, a sijo's tetrametre and sijo-chang's gak should correspond as the same value along with the completion of its meaning. If a sijo does not keep the metre, each part's completion of meaning and also the sijo-chang's gak become problematic, so it is impossible to perform sijo-chang. Only when each part's completion of meaning and the gak of the metre correspond to each other as the same value, the sijo can maintain its musicality. Next, the study verifies how musicality is shown in modern sijo. This was examined through the examples of gyeol-metre and yangjang-sijo in dan-sijo that cannot form any tongsa madi, arrangement of syllable units beyond metres, or the examples of loose reverse of meaning in a transitional phrase. The two kinds of musicality presented by this author have already been proved with old sijo. However, modern sijo has been created mainly centering around its image, so such musicality has been ignored and sijo's identity has been damaged seriously. In sijo, musicality gives life. If modern sijo is created mainly around its image, it can never be called as sijo unless it has musicality. Although modern sijo is not performed as music, it should be equipped with the form to be performed as a chang. This is how sijo can maintain its musicality. It is thought that now is the time to recognize modern sijo as the matter of communication between sijo-chang and sijo literature, not just as the combination of sijo-chang and sijo literature.

  • Analyzing various works of Nam June Paik who pioneered the world of video art, we can find a number of audiovisual art pieces - in a broad sense - with the characteristics of "intermedia" that are not clearly identified as one genre. Especially, his career as a musician becomes an important clue for us to discuss the unique originality found in Paik's works. Nevertheless, examples of research that specifically explore how Paik's musicality is reflected in his artistry and could be deeply understood is still rare. This article examines Paik's audiovisual art world, and reviews how his musicality is expressed through the characteristics of media and form, as well as contributed to the ultimate technical and aesthetic realizations of his pieces from the perspective of musical synesthesia. The fact that Paik expanded the concept of music through technology, and fused different media to visualize music, is an important achievement in the context of aesthetic, synesthetic music in the field of audiovisual art.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide methods to improve the teaching of piano technique of intermediate-level learners through the works of Stephen Heller by focusing on rhythm and balance. Although a romantic-era composer, Stephen Heller's works are not well-known. However, when analyzing his compositions, many require the player to focus on their foundational piano techniques and musicality. Heller composed many interesting works including etudes that allow intermediate-level pianists to develop their musicality as much as those playing Chopin or Liszt from the same era. This study presents teaching methods for developing piano technique by focusing on rhythm and balance, and for enhancing musicality to improve the quality and significance of piano education and pedagogical research.

  • This paper analyses the geometric aspect of Sonia Delaunay′s works on the basis of design elements and principles. Geometric pattern is one of the distinct features of early 20th century avant-garde works. The significance of its pattern and colour comes from the fact that it has not only influenced the contemporary fine art but also offered the basic principle of modern costume design. In 1925 she was designing clothes which could be worn today without appearing old-fashioned. She foresaw the future trends in fashion and interior decoration. One might claim she belongs to the avant-garde even today and no less astonishing a phenomenon than she was in 1925. Sonia Delaunay′s art was one of the first expressions of abstract painting and her "simultaneous contrasts" are among the earliest example of the aesthetic. In Delaunay′s geometric abstraction it is found that the technique of "simultaneous contrasts" is exploited almost without exception. Colour as well as Collage was the favourite technique Delnaunay used in creating a distinct simultaneity. Many "inobjective" paintings as she herself called unite the rigour of simple geometric forms with an inner life and poetry which emanate from the richness of the colour, the musicality of the rhythm, the vibrant breadth of the execution.

  • Pat Metheny debuted in 1976 and attracted the public beyond his genre in jazz by committing experimental and various music. His 50 albums have been recognized with musicality and artistry by winning 20 Grammy Awards and being awarded a Gold Disc 3 times. Therefore, his music cannot be expressed merely with the single word 'jazz'. In basic harmonics, there are distinct chords between major chord and minor chord. For example, Ionian Scale and Lydian Scale are used in major chord and Dorian Scale, Phrygian Scale, and Aeolian Scale are used in minor chord. It is also common to use m7b5 chord in Locrian Scale. However, after analyzing Pat Metheny's scale, he made Lick using Dorian Scale in major chord or using Lydian Scale in minor chord. In Dominant chord that can use various six scales, he often used Dorian Scale or Lydian Scale surprisingly. In some measures, he made Lick using Ionian Scale and Lydian Scale. In this case, since the whole atmosphere of that measure simultaneously expresses both the bright feeling of major and the lonely feeling of minor, it arouses a very special atmosphere. In addition, he brought 12-measure pattern and made Lick not using blues scale but often using Ionian Scale, Lydian Scale, and Mixo-Lydian Scale.
