Reproductive Ecology of the Cardinalfish Apogon lineatus (Perciformes: Apogonidae) in the Coastal Waters of Gori, Korea (고리 주변 해역에 출현하는 열동가리돔 (Apogon lineatus)의 생식생태)

  • The reproductive ecology of the cardinalfish Apogon lineatus was examined using 4,300 specimens collected monthly from January to December 2006 in the coastal waters of Gori, Korea. Specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 2.1 to 8.6 cm. They were distributed more in surface areas during summer and autumn and more on bottom areas during spring and winter. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in September and decreased until December, with the spawning season lasting from August to October. The monthly ratio of female to male did not significantly differ (${\chi}^2$-test, p>0.05). The size of 50% maturity was estimated at 5.43 cm SL and all females more than 7.0 cm SL were sexually mature. A. lineatus is a multiple spawner, spawning on more than one occasion in a single spawning season. The maximum egg diameter was 0.65 mm. Fecundity (F) ranged from 8,555 to 20,084 eggs, with a mean of 15,038 eggs. The relationship between fecundity and standard length was estimated as F=$334,851\;SL^{1.9876}$ ($R^2$=0.53). The relationship between fecundity and body weight(BW) was estimated as F=7,167.6 Ln (BW)-2,198.1 ($R^2$=0.33).

Reproductive Cycle of Female Hairychin Goby Sagamia geneionema (바닥문절 (Sagamia geneionema) 암컷의 생식주기)

  • This study investigated the reproductive cycle of the female hairychin goby, Sagamia geneionema, histologically. The fecundity of female hairychin goby ranged from 1,002 to 1,240 eggs when they reached a total length of 9.1-10.0 cm. Fecundity is related to total length. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) increased from December (1.87$\pm$0.46) and reached a maximum in April (11.57$\pm$1.92). The histological changes in the ovary were correlated with the GSI. Oocytes at the chromatin-nucleolus and peri-nucleolus stages were observed in the ovary year-round. In December, oocytes containing yolk appeared in the ovaries of a few fish. Most oocytes appearing in January were at the yolk globule stage. The frequency of oocytes appearing at the yolk globule stage from January to March was higher than in other months. Subsequently, empty follicles and atretic oocytes were observed in the ovaries in May. Based on the histological observations of gonad development and the monthly change in the GSI, the reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive stages: growing (October to November), mature (December to January), ripe and spawning (February to April), and degenerative and resting (May to September) stages. The histological observations of ovaries during the spawning period indicate that this species is a multiple spawner with abbreviated iteroparity based on the developmental pattern of oocytes.

Annual Reproductive Cycle of Wild Female Yellow Croaker, Larimichthys polyactis (자연산 암컷 참조기, Larimichthys polyactis의 생식년주기)

  • Annual reproductive cycle of small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis were histologically investigated based on samples captured nearby the coast around Chujado, Youngkwang and Kanghwa, South Korea from February $2004{\sim}February$,2005. By histological survey, the annual reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive stages: The primary growth stage from September to October, the second growth stage from October to December, the mature stage from January to April, the final mature, ovulation and spawning stage from May to June, the degeneration stage from June to July and the rest stage from August to September. Throughout anatomical observation of the ovary, it is found that the small yellow croaker, L. polyactis belongs to an asynchronous and multiple spawner from late spring to early summer.

Gonadal Maturation and Spawning of River Puffer Takifugu obscurus Indoor Cultured in Low Salinity (저염분에서 사육한 황복 Takifugu obscurus 생식소의 성숙과 산란)

  • Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) of wild river puffer Takifugu obscurus, and water quality environment in spawning area during breeding season were investigated from March 1995 to February 1996. Monthly changes in GSI and HSI of T. obscurus, that was cultured in low salinity, were calculated. The external morphology of the gonads, germ cell differentiation during gametogenesis and the reproductive cycle with the gonad developmental phases were investigated by histological analysis. The optimum water quality environment in Ganggyung, Choongcheongnam-do, where is spawning ground of wild T. obscurus, was $15-20^{\circ}C$ (water temperature) and 0 psu (salinity). Monthly changes in the GSI in females and males reached a maximum in May, and then rapidly decreased. Therefore, it is assumed that in the natural condition the spawning period of wild T. obscurus is May to June. In females and males, it showed a negative correlationship between the GSI and HSI. The external morphology of the gonads in female and male T. obscurus, that was cultured in low salinity, is composed of a pair of saccular structure. Based on monthly changes in the GSI, it is assumed that in female T. obscurus, that was cultured in low salinity, spawn from March through May. Therefore, it showed a negative correlationship between changes in the GSI and HSI. On the whole, in females and males, it showed a similar pattern between wild and cultured T. obscurus. The reproductive cycle with the gonad developmental phases can be classified into successive five stages in females: the early growing stage, late growing stage, mature stage, ripe and spent stage, and recovery and resting stage. In males, that can be divided into successive four stages: the growing stage, mature stage, ripe and spent stage, and recovery and resting stage. In case of wild T. obscurus, the spawning period has once a year, however, those cultured in the high water temperature ($20-27^{\circ}C$) - low salinity (under 3.3 psu) condition have reproductive characteristics having possibilities of discharge of eggs and sperms year-round as a multiple spawner.
