In many non-life insurance applications past data are given in a form known as the run-off triangle. Smoothing such data using parametric crisp regression models has long served as the basis of estimating future claim amounts and the reserves set aside to protect the insurer from future losses. In this article a fuzzy counterpart of the Hoerl curve, a well-known claim reserving regression model, is proposed to analyze the past claim data and to determine the reserves. The fuzzy Hoerl curve is more flexible and general than the one considered in the previous fuzzy literature in that it includes a categorical variable with multiple explanatory variables, which requires the development of the fuzzy analysis of covariance, or fuzzy ANCOVA. Using an actual insurance run-off claim data we show that the suggested fuzzy Hoerl curve based on the fuzzy ANCOVA gives reasonable claim reserves without stringent assumptions needed for the traditional regression approach in claim reserving.
A method for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) was introduced incorporating the information of mixed progeny from complex pedigrees. The method consisted of two steps based on single marker analysis. The first step was to examine the marker-trait association with a mixed model considering common environmental effect and reversed QTL-marker linkage phase. The second step was to estimate QTL effects by a weighted least square analysis. A simulation study indicated that the method incorporating mixed progeny from multiple generations improved the accuracy of QTL detection. The influence of within-genotype variance and recombination rate on QTL analysis was further examined. Detecting a QTL with a large within-genotype variance was more difficult than with a small within-genotype variance. Most of the significant marker-QTL association was detectable when the recombination rate was less than 15%.
The fatigue curve with estimated parameters represents the estimate of the median or mean life at a given applied stress But, in order to assist a designer in making decisions regarding the fatigue failure mode, it is common practice to construct a design curve on the lower or safe side of data. In this study, to overcome the limitations(i.e., no runout, equal variance, and quality of the approximation, etc) of Shen, Wirsching, and Cashman's method which suggested the approximate design curve for nonlinear models using tolerance interval constructed by Owen's method, an algorithm to find design curves under the fatigue model using a parametric bootstrap method, is proposed and illustrated with multiple fatigue data sets.

Agriculture is one of the essential needs of human life on planet Earth. It is the source of food and earnings for many individuals around the world. The economy of many countries is associated with the agriculture sector. Lots of diseases exist that attack various fruits and crops. Apple Tree Leaves also suffer different types of pathological conditions that affect their production. These pathological conditions include apple scab, cedar apple rust, or multiple diseases, etc. In this paper, an automatic detection framework based on deep learning is investigated for apple leaves disease classification. Different pre-trained models, VGG16, ResNetV2, InceptionV3, and MobileNetV2, are considered for transfer learning. A combination of parameters like learning rate, batch size, and optimizer is analyzed, and the best combination of ResNetV2 with Adam optimizer provided the best classification accuracy of 94%.
This exploratory study focuses on analyzing three mathematics textbooks in Germany, Singapore and South Korea to reveal similarities and differences in their introductions of fraction concepts. Findings reveal that all three countries' textbooks introduce fraction concepts predominantly by using pictorial representations such as area models, but the introductions of multiple fraction constructs vary. The Singaporean and South Korean textbooks predominantly used a part-whole construct to introduce fractional concepts while the German textbook introduced various constructs sequentially in the first pages using several scenarios from different real-life situations. The findings were represented using visual representations, which we called textbook signatures. The textbook signatures provided configurations of the textbook features across the three countries. At the end of paper, we share insights and limitations about the use of textbook signatures in the research on textbook analysis.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of adult children's marriage-delay on their parents' mental health. Furthermore, this study investigated how the influence of adult children's marriage-delay on parents' mental health could vary depending on the coresidence and employment status of the marriage-delayed adult children. Method: Two waves of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) were used for the analyses. Multiple regression models were conducted with 2,938 Korean parents who had at least one child, regardless of gender (aged 33~44). Results: First, adult children's marriage-delay was related to lower levels of parents' life satisfaction. Second, the levels of parents' life satisfaction were low regardless of residing with their marriage-delayed adult children, and the parents who were not living with their marriage-delayed adult children showed lower levels of life satisfaction than parents living with marriage-delayed adult children. Third, only the parents with unemployed marriage-delayed adult children showed significantly higher levels of depression. However, the levels of parents' life satisfaction were low regardless of the employment of marriage-delayed adult children, and the parents of unemployed marriage-delayed adult children showed lower levels of life satisfaction than the parents of employed marriage-delayed adult children. Conclusions: It is necessary to consider the effects of marriage, employment and coresidence of adult children on their parents in order to enhance the mental health of the parents. Also, the effects of marriage-delay on intimate relationships, such as family dynamics, need to be explored more in further research.
Purpose: Various methods have been proposed to achieve the nearly complete decontamination of the surface of implants affected by peri-implantitis. We investigated the in vitro debridement efficiency of multiple decontamination methods (Gracey curettes [GC], glycine air-polishing [G-Air], erythritol air-polishing [E-Air] and titanium brushes [TiB]) using a novel spectrophotometric ink-model in 3 different bone defect settings (30°, 60°, and 90°). Methods: Forty-five dental implants were stained with indelible ink and mounted in resin models, which simulated standardised peri-implantitis defects with different bone defect angulations (30°, 60°, and 90°). After each run of instrumentation, the implants were removed from the resin model, and the ink was dissolved in ethanol (97%). A spectrophotometric analysis was performed to detect colour remnants in order to measure the cumulative uncleaned surface area of the implants. Scanning electron microscopy images were taken to assess micromorphological surface changes. Results: Generally, the 60° bone defects were the easiest to debride, and the 30° defects were the most difficult (ink absorption peak: 0.26±0.04 for 60° defects; 0.32±0.06 for 30° defects; 0.27±0.04 for 90° defects). The most effective debridement method was TiB, independently of the bone defect type (TiB vs. GC: P<0.0001; TiB vs. G-Air: P=0.0017; TiB vs. GE-Air: P=0.0007). GE-Air appeared to be the least efficient method for biofilm debridement. Conclusions: T-brushes seem to be a promising decontamination method compared to the other techniques, whereas G-Air was less aggressive on the implant surface. The use of a spectrophotometric model was shown to be a novel but promising assessment method for in vitro ink studies.
Estimating genetic interaction effects in animal genomics would be one of the most challenging studies because the phenotypic variation for economically important traits might be largely explained by interaction effects among multiple nucleotide sequence variants under various environmental exposures. Genetic improvement of economic animals would be expected by understanding multi-locus genetic interaction effects associated with economic traits. Most analyses in animal breeding and genetics, however, have excluded the possibility of genetic interaction effects in their analytical models. This review discusses a historical estimation of the genetic interaction and difficulties in analyzing the interaction effects. Furthermore, two recently developed methods for assessing genetic interactions are introduced to animal genomics. One is the restricted partition method, as a nonparametric grouping-based approach, that iteratively utilizes grouping of genotypes with the smallest difference into a new group, and the other is the Bayesian method that draws inferences about the genetic interaction effects based on their marginal posterior distributions and attains the marginalization of the joint posterior distribution through Gibbs sampling as a Markov chain Monte Carlo. Further developing appropriate and efficient methods for assessing genetic interactions would be urgent to achieve accurate understanding of genetic architecture for complex traits of economic animals.
Mechanical properties of 15 mm thick, three-layer particleboard were studied by varying resin content, specific gravity, mat moisture content, pressing time and pressing temperature. Based on the results of the study, Multiple regression models were developed to estimate the mechanical properties of three-layer particleboard. The results of this study showed the mechanical properties of particleboard were highly related with resin content. specific gravity and mat moisture content in decending order. The mechanical properties were able to estimated as the linear function of resin content and specific gravity. However, the effects of change in mat moisture content on the mechanical properties showed a non-linear pattern. The mechanical properties curves over mat moisture content reached peaks at 15 %, and then decreased at 18 % and 21 % of mat moisture contents. On the other hand, the effects of pressing time and pressing temperature on the mechanical properties of particleboard were not significant.
For economical and environmental reasons, the aim of this research is hence to monitor the cutting conditions with the dry cutting, the wet cutting, and the mist cutting to obtain the proper cutting condition for the plain carbon steel with the ball end milling based on the consideration of the surface roughness of the machined parts, the life of the cutting tools, the use of the cutting fluids, the density of the particles of cutting fluids dispersed in the working area, and the cost of cutting. The experimentally obtained results of the relation between tool wear and surface roughness, the relation between tool wear and cutting force, and the relation between cutting force and surface roughness are correspondent with the same trend. The phenomena of surface roughness and tool wear can be explained by the in-process cutting forces. The models of the tool wear with the cutting conditions and the cutting times are proposed to estimate the tool cost for the different cooling strategies based on the experimental data using the multiple regression technique. The cutting cost is calculated from the costs of cutting tool and cutting fluid. The mist cutting gives the lowest cutting cost as compared to others. The experimentally obtained proper cutting condition is determined based on the experimental results referring to the criteria.
