  • Recently, there has been much interests in InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures due to their applicability as optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes [1]. Their ultrafast and physical properties are also of significant interests. Anomalously large acoustic phonon oscillations have been observed using ultrafast lasers in InGaN MQWs [2]. In this study, we have peformed femtosecond pump-probe experiments in the reflection geometry on 5 periods InGaN/GaN MQW LED structure with well width of 20$\AA$ and barrier width of 100$\AA$ at room temperature. • A new all-optical flip-flop (AOFF) method based on the absorption nulls of an injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) in transverse magnetic (TM) mode is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. For the set and reset operations of the AOFF, injection locking and the destructive minus of beating in transverse electric (TE) mode are used. The absorption nulls on the TM mode are modulated according to the operations, and then non-inverted (Q) and inverted (${\bar{Q}}$) outputs can be obtained simultaneously. Thanks to the use of several absorption nulls, the proposed AOFF can achieve multiple outputs with extinction ratios of more than 15 dB. Even though the experiment is demonstrated at 100 Mbit/s, the results of previous experiments using the injection of a CW holding beam imply that the operation speed can increase to 10 Gbit/s.

  • Recently, the development of mobile devices demands information storage systems to use micro drive devices and cheap media. These should have several characteristics, for example, the subminiature of size, the robustness of shock, the minimum of cost and power consumption, and the removability of multiple applications. A conventional optical disk drive is more suitable for these specifications than the others. The optical storage system of the new generation to use a blue laser and a high numerical aperture (NA) is the perfect candidate for micro optical disk drives. In this paper, the micro actuator that can be applied to a micro optical disk drive is designed by response surface methodology to use a structural analysis and an electro-magnetic analysis. Based on above results, the coarse actuator and fine actuator are designed and improved from the point of view of the size and the power. Consequently, the designs of a micro actuator are proposed through these courses.

  • In this paper, I introduce Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management of high power devices that can be applied to High Power Laser and Electric Propulsion Systems which are composed of multiple distributed superheat sources. Phase-Change Cooling can be good used to efficient cooling of their heat sources. Phase-Change Cooling has extremely high efficiency of two-phase heat transport by utilizing heat of vaporization, relatively low flow rates and reduced pumps power. And I suggest TPI(Thermal Performance Index) which is a quantitative performance index of Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management. I quantify the performance of Phase-Change Cooling by introducing TPI. I present the test results of TPI's changing refrigerant, heat sink and flow rate of the Phase-Change Cooling system through the experiments and analyze these results.

  • Granular cell tumor or also called Abrikossoff's tumor, is a rare benign tumor that can occur anywhere in the body. Granular cell tumor may single or multiple (synchronous or metachronous). Approximately half of all granular cell tumors occur in the head and neck. most commonly in the tongue. But granular cell tumors of the larynx are rare, accounting for only 7 to 10% of all reported cases. Laryngeal tumors are usually small and men are more frequently affected than women. The exact histogenesis is still not known but most recent data support the neurogenic Schwann cell origin. The preferred treatment is local excision using cold knife or laser. Radiation therapy is of little benefit. We report a case of granular cell tumor of the larynx which was confirmed by histopathology.

  • Low-stress silicon nitride (LSN) thin films with embedded metal line have been developed as free standing structures to keep microspheres in proper locations and localized heat source for application to a chip-based sensor array for the simultaneous and near-real-time detection of multiple analytes in solution. The LSN film has been utilized as a structural material as well as a hard mask layer for wet anisotropic etching of silicon. The LSN was deposited by LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) process by varing the ratio of source gas flows. The residual stress of the LSN film was measured by laser curvature method. The residual stress of the LSN film is 6 times lower than that of the stoichiometric silicon nitride film. The test results showed that not only the LSN film but also the stack of LSN layers with embedded metal line could stand without notable deflection.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions have been investigated by a digital speckle tomography with a novel integration method. Multiple CCD images captured movements of speckles in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and unsteady. The speckle movements which have been formed by a ground glass between no flow and downward butane flow from an elliptical nozzle have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. A novel integration method has been developed to obtain projection data from the deflection angles for the speckle tomography. The unsteady density fields have been reconstructed from the accurate projection values by the digital speckle tomography method using the developed integration method.

  • Rapid Prototyping has made a drastic change in all industries which needs to reduce the time for the development of new products. Orientation and packing in rapid prototyping is considered as the most important factors to maximize the utilization of space in the build chamber and reduce build time. However, the decision of these parameter is mainly dependant on the operators's experience. This paper presents the methodology to find the optimal build layout considering an orientation and packing of multiple parts in SLS processing. Each part is represented as a voxel structure to deal with the inefficiency in a bounding box approach. Test results show that the adapted BL algorithm with a genetic algorithm(GA) can be applicable to a real industry.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions have been investigated by three-dimensional digital speckle tomography. Multiple CCD images captured movements of speckles in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and transient. The speckle movements between no flow and downward butane flow from a circular half opening have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a real-time multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART).
