The modified ESPRIT(MESPRIT) method for harmonic retrieval is presented and analyzed. The estimation of frequencies of sinusoidal signals corrupted by white or colored measurement noise is considered for the MESPRIT method. Monte-carlo simulations are conducted for the comparison of MESPRIT method with TK method in terms of sampled mean, root mean square and relative bias.
We propose to use transverse waves instead of longitudinal waves in a scanning tomographic acoustic microscope (STAM) and new type of multiple-transducer with the functions of muliple-angle and multiple-frequency tomography. Proposed multiple-transducer scheme has three insonification angles and three resonance frequencies in order to operate in the transverse wave mode and multiple-angle and multiple frequency tomography for the STAM. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed transducer scheme we have simulated tomographic reconstruction with back-and-forth propagation(BFP) algorithm. Simulation results showed proposed multiple-transducer scheme is capable of obtaining good resolution with transverse wave mode and multiple-frequency tomography. It is also showed that proposed scheme is an efficient rotation scheme by proportion to the number of projections.

A new concept of piezoelectric smart panels for noise reduction in wide band frequencies is proposed and their possibility is experimentally investigated. The proposed panels are based on active and passive methods. They use piezoelectric smart structure technology for active noise reduction at low band frequencies and passive sound absorbing materials for mid-range of noise frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment was performed. The smart panels exhibit a good noise reduction in middle and high frequency ranges due to the mass effects of absorbing materials or/and the air gap. The use of piezoelectric smart panel renders noise reduction large at resonance frequency. Another concept of smart panel that uses piezoelectric damping is experimentally investigated. Since piezoelectric dampings can reduce vibration and noise at resonance frequencies with simple shunt circuit, they have merits in terms of economy and simplicity. Dissipated energy method(DEM) is adopted to tune the shunt circuit precisely in piezoelectric dampings. Noise reduction at multiple resonance frequencies is demonstrated.

In this paper, we described the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CLRB) performances of Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and Frequency Difference of Arrival (FDOA) methods when there are multiple emitters. The TDOA and FDOA values between two receivers can be simultaneously estimated by using the so-called Complex Ambiguity Function (CAF). In the case of multiple emitters, there exist Inter Symbol Interferences (ISIs) in the measurement data. Therefore, it is required to reduce the effect of ISI and provide a performance evaluation method of TDOA and FDOA estimations. In order to eliminate the ISIs, using of a filter bank before calculating CAF is proposed when the carrier frequencies of the emitters are different to one another. Angle of Arrival (AOA) or Received Signal Strength (RSS) methods before calculating CAF were proposed to reduce the ISIs when the carrier frequencies are the same. In order to evaluate the CRLB of TDOA and FDOA estimations, we employed the conditional probability distribution method and described the numerical comparison results.

This paper investigates the characteristics of cogging torque and magnetic force of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor due to imperfect magnetization of permanent magnet (PM) numerically and experimentally which results in the magnetically induced vibration. A predicted magnetization pattern of the PM of the BLDC motor, which is derived from the measured surface magnetic flux density along the PM, is applied to the finite element analysis in order to calculate the cogging torque and the unbalanced magnetic force. This research also develops the experimental setup to measure the unbalanced magnetic force as well as the cogging torque. It shows numerically and experimentally that the imperfect magnetization of permanent magnet generates the driving frequencies of cogging torque with integer multiple of slot number in addition to the least common multiple of pole and slot. It also shows that the driving frequencies of unbalanced magnetic force are integer multiple of slot number ${\pm}1$ due to imperfect magnetization of PM even in the rotationally symmetric design.

This paper investigates the distortion of magnetic field of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor due to deformed rubber magnet. Global or local deformation of rubber magnet in the BLDC motor is mathematically modeled by using the Fourier series. Distorted magnetic field is calculated by using the finite element method, and unbalanced magnetic force are calculated by using the Maxwell stress tensor. The first harmonic deformation in the global deformation of rubber magnet generates the first harmonic driving frequency of the unbalanced magnetic force, and the rest harmonic deformations of rubber magnet except the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot introduces the driving frequencies with multiple of slot number ${\pm}1$ to the unbalanced magnetic force. However, the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot does not generate unbalanced magnetic force due to the rotational symmetry. When the rubber magnet is locally deformed, the unbalanced magnetic force has the first harmonic driving frequency and the driving frequencies with multiples of slot number ${\pm}1$.
Positive selection on a new beneficial mutation generates a characteristic pattern of DNA sequence polymorphism when it reaches an intermediate allele frequency. On genome sequences of African Drosophila melanogaster, we detected such signatures of selection at 37 candidate loci and identified "sweeping haplotypes (SHs)" that are increasing or have increased rapidly in frequency due to hitchhiking. Based on geographic distribution of SH frequencies, we could infer whether selective sweeps occurred starting from de novo beneficial mutants under simple constant selective pressure. Single SHs were identified at more than half of loci. However, at many other loci, we observed multiple independent SHs, implying soft selective sweeps due to a high beneficial mutation rate or parallel evolution across space. Interestingly, SH frequencies were intermediate across multiple populations at about a quarter of the loci despite relatively low migration rates inferred between African populations. This invokes a certain form of frequency-dependent selection such as heterozygote advantage. At one locus, we observed a complex pattern of multiple independent that was compatible with recurrent frequency-dependent positive selection on new variants. In conclusion, genomic patterns of positive selection are very diverse, with equal contributions of hard and soft sweeps and a surprisingly large proportion of frequency-dependent selection in D. melanogaster populations.
We developed an accurate and simple vibration model to calculate the natural frequencies and their corresponding vibration modes for multi-span beam bridges with non-uniform cross-sections. A closed set of characteristic functions of a single-span beam was used to construct the vibration modes of the multi-span bridges, which were considered single-span beams with multiple constraints. To simplify the boundary conditions, the restraints were converted into spring constraints. Then the functional of the total energy has the same form as the penalty method. Compared to the conventional penalty method, the penalty coefficients in the proposed approach can be calculated directly, which can avoid the iteration process and convergence problem. The natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes were obtained via the minimum total potential energy principle. By using the symmetry of the eigenfunctions or structure, the matrix size can be further reduced, which increases the computational efficiency of the proposed model. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach were validated by the finite element method.
2-D complex Gabor filtering has found numerous applications in the fields of computer vision and image processing. Especially, in some applications, it is often needed to compute 2-D complex Gabor filter bank consisting of the 2-D complex Gabor filtering outputs at multiple orientations and frequencies. Although several approaches for fast 2-D complex Gabor filtering have been proposed, they primarily focus on reducing the runtime of performing the 2-D complex Gabor filtering once at specific orientation and frequency. To obtain the 2-D complex Gabor filter bank output, existing methods are repeatedly applied with respect to multiple orientations and frequencies. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that efficiently computes the 2-D complex Gabor filter bank by reducing the computational redundancy that arises when performing the Gabor filtering at multiple orientations and frequencies. The proposed method first decomposes the Gabor basis kernels to allow a fast convolution with the Gaussian kernel in a separable manner. This enables reducing the runtime of the 2-D complex Gabor filter bank by reusing intermediate results of the 2-D complex Gabor filtering computed at a specific orientation. Experimental results demonstrate that our method runs faster than state-of-the-arts methods for fast 2-D complex Gabor filtering, while maintaining similar filtering quality.
When generating spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion in engineering practices, the effect of the variation in fitting parameters on the distribution of the peak ground displacement (PGD) has not yet drawn enough attention. In this study, a method for simulating ground motion matching for multiple targets is developed. In this method, a frequency-dependent amplitude envelope function with statistical parameters is introduced to simulate the nonstationarity of the frequency in earthquake ground motion. Then, several groups of time-history acceleration with different temporal and spectral nonstationarities were generated to analyze the effect of nonstationary parameter variations on the distribution of PGD. The following conclusions are drawn from the results: (1) In the simulation of spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion, if the acceleration time-history is generated with random initial phases, the corresponding PGD distribution is quite discrete and an uncertain number of PGD values lower than the limit value are observed. Nevertheless, the mean values of PGD always meet the requirement in every group. (2) If the nonstationary frequencies of the ground motion are taken into account when fitting the target spectrum, the corresponding PGD values will increase. A correlation analysis shows that the change in the mean and the dispersion values, from before the frequencies are controlled to after, correlates with the modal parameters of the predominant frequencies. (3) Extending the maximum period of the target spectrum will increase the corresponding PGD value and, simultaneously, decrease the PGD dispersion. Finally, in order to control the PGD effectively, the ground motion simulation method suggested in this study was revised to target a specified PGD. This novel method can generate ground motion that satisfies not only the required precision of the target spectrum, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and nonstationarity characteristics of the ground motion but also meets the required limit of the PGD, improving engineering practices.
