An epulis(plural: epulides) is a benign neoplasm derived from the periodontal ligament or connective tissue. They occur commonly in dogs [1]. Epulides can be classified into four types on the basis of histologic appearance: Fibromatous, ossifying, acanthomatous and giant cell [2]. Here we report a case of epulis that shows all features of fibromatous, ossifying and giant cell epulides simultaneously. (omitted)
A 5-month-old intact female Siberian Husky dog was presented for evaluation of severely enlarged maxilla. Abnormalities in CBC, serum chemistry and urinalysis indicated purulent inflammation and renal failure. Cytologic examination of the swollen maxilla showed a mixed population of multinucleated giant cells and round to polygonal to spindle shaped cells either individualized or aggregated. Both type of cells showed moderate anisokaryosis, and anisocytosis, prominent nucleolus or multiple nucleoli, and coarse chromatin. On histopathology maxilla and turbinate were diffusely expanded and replaced by variably dense fibrous connective tissue, and the kidneys showed changes consistent with renal dysplasia. Based on these findings, the diagnosis of fibrous osteodystrophy due to renal dysplasia and fibrosis was made. Despite the supportive care, the dog continued to decline and was euthanized.
Panax ginseng (family- Araliaceae) is a native plant of Korea and has been used for past several years among oriental people. To evaluate the radioprotective potential of P. ginseng on the formation of giant cells in the testis of Swiss albino mice, the animals were divided into four groups: -(I)-Only vehicle was administered. (II)P. ginseng treated group: -The animals received 10 mg/kg body weight P. ginseng root extract (in DDW) i.p. continuously for 30 days. (III) Irradiated group: -The animals were exposed to 8 Gy gamma radiation at the dose rate of 1.69 Gy/min at the distance of 80 ems. (IV) Combined treatment group: -Animals were given P. ginseng extract for four days and on fourth day they were irradiated to 8 Gy gamma radiation after 30 minute of extract administration. The animals of these three groups were autopsied on day 1,3, 7, 14 and 30 days. In ginseng treated group, active spermatogenesis was observed without any toxic effect. Histopathological studies of irradiated group (II) revealed reduction in germ cell count, loss of sperms and formation of multinucleated giant cells on day 7th. These giant cells were formed by round nuclei of early or late spermatids. In combination group (III), although germinal epithelium was still disorganized with loss of cells in few tubules, but no giant cell formation was observed. In order to know the mechanism of radioprotection of ginseng, LPO and GSH were estimated. It was observed that pretreated irradiated animals showed inhibition of LPO and increase in GSH. Thus the present study suggests ginseng protects male gonads. This may be attributed to the inhibition of LPO and increase synthesis of GSH byginseng.
To know the effect of Ivermectin(IVM) toxicity in testis, histopathologic changes as well as clinical signs were observed in experimental animals including dogs by the subcutaneous injection with 3-50mg/kg of IVM. Clinically, it was observed to have depression and ataxia in all groups whereas tremor and coma in mice, rats and guinea pigs, coma in hamsters and rabbits, and tremor and salivation in dogs were shown. The clinical signs were different by the dosage of IVM, species and individuals in all animals. Susceptibility to IVM was most sensitive in dogs, especially in a Tosa dog and this was susceptible in mice, hamsters and rabbits, guinea pigs and rats in order. Microscopical observation revealed that the seminiferous tubules of testis had decreased thickness of germinal epithelium due to the necrosis and desquamation of the spermatids and spermatocytes. The progressive pattern by the times of administration showed vacuolar formation between the layer of spermatids and spermatogonia due to the marked necrosis of spermatocytes and the presence of multinucleated giant cells derived from spermatid throughout the seminiferous tubules of testis. Only a layer of spermatogonia, a few spermatogonia, and Sertoli cells wore observed with atrophied wavelike basement membrane in the seminiferous tubules of testis. Necrotic germinal cells, sloughed immature spermatids and spermatocytes were present in the lumen of epididymis and ductus deferens. Microscopical observation showed different susceptibility to IVM with clinical observation in which it was also most sensitive in dogs, especially in a Tosa dog and this was susceptible in rabbits and guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice in order. It was considered that IVM affects mainly spermatocyte or spermatid stage in the spermatogenesis and disturbs their developing beyond these stage.
Phosphamidon(PMD) is orgnophosphate insecticide broadly using in agriculture. In order to study PMD toxicity in the testis, histopathological change and apoptosis were assessed following acute and chronic oral administration in rats and chickens. In acute studies, histopathological changes included necrosis and desquamation of spermatogenic cells, multinucleated giant cells in the lumen of seminiferous tubules, and necrotic cells and the giant cells in the epididymal lumen. Atrophy of seminiferous tubule was seen in the chronic exposure with low doses. The toxic effects of PMD in chronic exposure including clinical signs and histopathological changes were more pronounced in chickens than rats. Apoptosis assessment was performed by TUNEL method and Hoechst staining. TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells were found in spermatocytes of seminiferous tubules, testicular apoptosis was more prominent following acute exposure than control and chronic exposure. Above mentioned result noticed that PMD causes apoptotic death and effects directly the spermatocytogenesis.
Isolated tuberculosis of the coccyx is extremely rare. A 35-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of coccygeal and gluteal pain. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed osseous destruction and a large enhancing mass involving the coccyx with anterior and posterior extension. Pathologic examination of the surgical specimen revealed necrosis, chronic granulomatous inflammation, and multinucleated giant cells consistent with tuberculosis. This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis as a diagnosis even though unusual sites are involved.
An adult female ringed seal died suddenly and was subsequently examined for diagnostic purposes. The animal's lungs demonstrated mild non-collapsibility and multifocal white to yellow patches. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal pulmonary histiocytosis. Alveoli were filled with numerous foamy macrophages cytoplasm and scattered multinucleated giant cells containing cholesterol clefts. The foamy cytoplasm of the macrophages stained with oil red O stain. Further, lipid droplets within the cytoplasm were detected by electron microscopy. To the author's knowledge, this is the first case report describing the histochemical staining and electron microscopic findings associated with endogenous lipid pneumonia in ringed seal.
A 4-week-old male piglet being maintained in a research facility was found dead without any previous clinical signs. The piglet had been born from a surrogate mother after somatic nuclear transfer as part of a xenotransplantation study. Ovaries for nuclear transfer were obtained from a private farm outside the research facility. Histopathologically, multifocal to coalescing granulomatous myocarditis was observed in the heart, characterized by infiltration of lymphocytes, macrophages and multinucleated giant cells, and by myocardial necrosis and fibrosis. Lymphoid tissues showed marked lymphoid depletion with infiltration by histiocytes or giant cells. Immunohistochemistry showed PCV-2 antigens in necrotic myocytes, macrophages and multinucleated giant cells in the heart, as well as in macrophages and giant cells in lymphoid depleted areas of lymphoid tissues. Reproductive failure associated with PCV-2 in aborted or stillborn piglets is frequently characterized by myocarditis, and similar lesions were observed in this 4-week-old piglet with PCV-2 infection. The PCV-2 infection in this piglet may have been due to contamination or infection of an ovary from the pig farm.
Fine needle aspiration of the breast is an important diagnostic tool in malignant lesions, but is also useful in differentiation of inflammatory breast diseases mimicking carcinoma clinically and radiologically. Recently, the authors have experienced eight biopsy-proven cases of chronic inflammatory diseases of the breast, which consisted of 4 cases of duct ectasia, 2 cases of fat necrosis, and a case of tuberculous mastitis and granulomatous mastitis respectively. Their cytologic features mainly based on the components and the relative frequency of inflammatory cells were evaluated for differential diagnosis of chronic inflammatory breast diseases. The results are as follows; 1. In cases of duct ectasia, varying amount of neutrophils, mononuclear leukocytes, histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells were intermixed with benign epithelial cell clusters. 2 Abundant fat tissue fragments were diagnostic for fat necrosis. Histiocytes and mononuclear cells were main components but not rich, and neutrophils and giant cells were infrequently observed. 3. Characteristic granulomas composed of epithelioid cells, mononuclear leukocytes and Langhans' type giant cells and lymphocytic infiltrates were conspicuous in tuberculous mastitis, and occasionally neutrophils, necrotic materials and epithelial cell clusters were found 4. In granulomatous mastitis, epithelioid cell granulomas were also noted but numerous neutrophils and histiocytes were intermingled within or outside the granulomas.

The soft tissue tumors that occur commonly in newborn infants include palatal and gingival cyst of the newborn, congenital epulis, hemangioma, teratoma, pyogenic granuloma, and irritation fibroma. Such soft tissue tumors in the alveolar ridge of newborns are usually treated by surgical excision. If untreated, they can cause airway obstruction and breathing difficulty due to aspiration. They also cause discomfort during oral feeding. If nasal feeding is tried, since vomitting is impossible, there is a risk of aspiration pneumonia. In this case, a newborn infant visited our hospital with soft tissue tumor as chief complaint, and the infant was treated by surgical excision. It appeared to be similar to pyogenic granuloma and irritation fibroma upon histologic exam. However, it was different from those diseases since multinucleated giant cells were observed and it was congenital. The pathologic process of this neoplasm is not clear. This case is reported, since it is difficult to classify it as a specific disease.
