Reliable and Flexible Storage System for NAS Environments (NAS를 위한 신뢰성과 확장성이 있는 저장 장치 시스템)

  • The rapid growth of high speed multimedia services demands the large capacity of the server's storage that maintains the multimedia contents. Among the server's devices, the low I/O speed and physical or logical failure of storage device decrease the total performance of system. The continuous increase of multimedia contents require the flexibility of storage capacity. In order to solve the these problems, we propose the uses of software RAID and LVM techniques that provide the performance improvement and reliability of storage device and the flexibility of storage device respectively. In the LINUX 2.4 kernel, we implemented the reliable and flexible storage device and evaluated the performance of it.

  • The web 2.0 is leading a rapid change of internet services. The UCC(User Created Contents) service is one of the representative internet services with web 2.0 paradigm. In this paper, we design and implement the UCC services prototype system for image and video. The proposed system does not need to install ActiveX and client programs on devices of users to edit their contents. All processes for editing UCC are conducted on the server. Our proposed system consists of the two components such as the multimedia editing subsystem and the metadata management system. They provide the API to UCC service developers or vendors. The multimedia editing subsystem supports editing for image and video, and the streaming services of video. The metadata management subsystem supports the metadata management and retrieval of image and video.

  • As a single video server exposes its limitation in scalability, capability, fault-tolerance, and cost-efficiency, solutions of this limitation emerge. However, these solutions have their own problems that will be discussed in this paper. To solve these problems and exploit various video silvers, we designed a parallel multimedia system architecture that supported a content-aware routing to heterogeneous personal computer (PC), operating system (OS), video servers through a HTTP-level redirection. We also developed a prototype, added different video servers into the prototype, and measured its overheads.

  • We study the problem of search in which a server contains various multimedia contents and a user wishes to retrieve some multimedia items containing a specific without revealing to the server which items they are. Recently, Ogata and Kurosawa introduced a search scheme by using the notion of oblivious transfer. In their scheme, a user must inefficiently search and compare all the data stored in the seuer for each search query. In this paper, we propose an efficient oblivious search by using the oblivious transfer, in which a user needs not to search and compare all the data. We formally prove that the proposed scheme is secure under the hardness of RSA known target inversion problem.

  • In this paper, we implemented a system which provides more effective conference control than that of video conferencing system has been used on MBone. The system provides multicast service on the non-broadcasting network. It multicasts multimedia data using several MTS(Multipoint Transport Server)s and provides a tightly coupled conference control service with a CCS(Conference Control Server). As providing a tightly coupled conference control service, we can perform effectively video conferencing using this system.

  • Embedded system area has brought an innovation and has been spread rapidly by the growth of the Internet, wireless telephony and multimedia recently. Many embedded systems are required to be real-time systems in that it needs multi-tasking and priority based scheduling. This paper introduces a real-time system that was developed with web server ability for control and monitoring system employing a real-time operating system. It discusses the design model, structure, and applications of web server system. We used SNDS100 board which has a 32-bit RISC microcontroller of ARM7TDMI core as a hardware platform. MicroC/OS kernel was used as Real-time operating system that supports a preemptive and multitasking functions. We developed a hierarhchical control and monitoring system that not only reduced system and management costs, but also enhanced reusability and portability.

  • The Purposes of this study are twofold. Firstly, the study investigated the spec of the server environment for managing the academic affairs, and overviewed the theoretical background in connection with the clients and the server as a way of implementing a comprehensive management system for school information which can be effectively utilized for cyber education, multimedia education, joint ownership of learning materials, and educational activities as well as management of the academic affairs using the UNIX-based server, which has lately installed on school thanks to the speedy development of the Internet, Secondly, this study, placing emphasis on practical aspects, attempted to find a method of implementing the web server for constructing a school website in order to provide educational information.

Simulation Study on the Stream Server for Deciding the Priority for Using Resources (스트림 서버에서 자원 사용 우선순위 결정을 위한 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • Stream servers are for supplying multimedia stream data to users through the internet such as movies and music without discontinuation. A typical stream server is designed roughly by considering the characteristics of stream services and by employing processors, memory, PCI bus, Ethernet, TOE and disks. This study focuses on deciding the priority for using resources such as PCI bus, buffer memory and TOE buffer, which have limited capacities in a typical stream server. When the priorities for using limited resources are not given properly, the stream servers may not even function as originally designed. The simulation study shows that the top priority for using PCI bus for normal streaming services should be given to the operation that sends data from buffer memory to TOE buffer. Giving priority for using PCI bus to other operation such as sending data from disks to memory results in a deadlock phenomenon.

Web Server Cluster Load Balancing

  • This study designs a load balancer via direct routing that share a virtual service on a single IP address in the Linux system and suggests an efficient load balancing method to improve transmission speed in the web server cluster environment. It will increase performance and scalability with fast packet transfer and removing bottleneck problem by using TCP Splicing and Content-Aware Distributor method. This method is expected to be the noticeable technology that provides an important interface, which make application services for e-commerce effectively be applied to high-speed network infrastructure. At this time, it is required to study further on the optimum balancing method in the web server cluster environment so as to apply the hybrid (optimum load balancing method by software and hardware) method and improve the reuse of security cession based on high-speed TCP connections.
