Human factors guidelines for designing anchors in the moving pictures on multimedia systems (멀티미디어 시스템의 동영상 노드를 위한 앵커의 인간공학적 설계지침)

  • Multimedia systems present information by various media, for example, video, sound, music, animation, movie, etc., in addition to the text which has long been used for conveying the information. Among many multimedia applications, the multimedia information retrieval systems commercialized in the forms of multimedia encyclopedia CD-ROMs, benefited from various media for their ability to present information in an efficient and complete way. But using several media, on the other hand, may cause end users' confusion and furthermore, poorly designed user interface often exacerbates the situation. In this study, the multimedia systems were studied from the standpoint of usability. The conceptual framework of the user interface of the multimedia system was newly defined. And 100 initial variables for user interface design of general multimedia systems were suggested through literature survey and expert opinions based upon the framework developed. Among various application areas, the multimedia information retrieval systems were chosen for investigation, and 36 variables particularly relevant to user interface of the multimedia information retrieval systems were selected. According to the sequential research strategy, the variables that were considered to be most important were finally selected through a screening stage. A part of selected variables were verified through a human factors experiment as the first step of sequential research. Based upon the result of the experiment, guidelines for user interface design were provided. For future study, the variables remained will be Investigated and the study will expand to another application areas.

Analysis on Current States of Multimedia Interface Design Research (멀티미디어 인터페이스 디자인의 연구 경향 분석)

  • This study aims to clarify the nature and properties of multimedia interface design, and to identify direction of multimedia interface design research. It also focuses on forecasting boundaries and major trends in current researches on multimedia interface design. The two jargons, 'interface' and 'interaction', are distinguished clearly to show the definition and boundary of multimedia interface. The multidisciplinary nature of multimedia interface design is identified as a result of examination and analysis on major researches. Nine research cases have been selected and categorized into two directions as the theoretical approach and the technical approach. Major characteristics of each case are examined in terms of subjects and methodologies. Findings on current states of the multimedia interface design research are: $\circled1$increasing importance of contextuality; $\circled2$emerging tendency for perceiving the content as one of interacting subjects; $\circled3$providing idiomatic interface context; and $\circled4$paying much attention to the meaning of minor actions. Those findings can be possible as a result of expansion of boundary of multimedia content with rapid distribution of multimedia in recent years. The study concludes that further researches can be activated on the basis of the concept of content-based multimedia interface.

  • 햅틱 인터페이스 장치는 가상공간 상에서 얻어지는 시각적 효과와 더불어 힘(촉각)을 전달하여 사용자에게 현실감을 줄 수 있는 장치이다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 용도로 사용할 수 있는 2 차원 햅틱 인터페이스 장치를 설계 및 제작하고, 입체영상 시스템과 연동하여 오락실에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 에어하키 시스템을 가상현실 기술로 구현하였다. 이때 적절한 모델링과 햅틱 렌더링을 통하여 가상 에어하키 공을 칠 때 사용자가 핸들을 잡은 손으로 느끼는 충격과 반력을 2 차원 햅틱 인터페이스 장치를 통하여 느낄 수 있도록 하였다. 구현된 시스템의 시연을 통하여 공과 핸들의 충돌 시 공이 튕겨 나가는 방향과 속도가 실제와 유사하고 공과 핸들에서 충돌이 일어날 때 실제와 상당히 유사한 느낌은 얻을 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Among many multimedia applications, the multimedia information retrieval systems commercialized in the form of multimedia encyclopedia CD-ROMs, benefit by using various media for their ability to present information in an efficient and complete way. But using various media may cause end users' confusion and furthermore, poor user-interface design often exacerbates the systems. For appropriate design of the user interface of multimedia information retrieval systems, we investigated the characteristics of the multimedia information retrieval systems and listed 35 variables that might affect the usability of the user interface. And we selected 10 variables through some procedures such as brainstorming, literature survey, expert opinion, relevance analysis and feasibility analysis, in order to perform a screening study which will remarkably reduce the cost and time in conducting subsequent human factors experiments.

  • For the low-power design of the mobile multimedia system architecture, this paper modeling the mobile multimedia system and analysis the power consumption profile about the whole communication environment. The mobile system model consist of air interface, RIP front-end, base-band processing module and human interface. For the result of power consumption profile analysis, the power consumption of multimedia processing is above 60% compare to the whole power consumption in mobile multimedia system. To minimize the power consumption in processing module which consumes the large power, this paper proposed the Microscopic DVS technique which applies the optimum voltage for the each multimedia frame. For the simulation result, proposed power minimization technique reduce the power consumption about 30%.

  • In this paper, we propose the multimedia tutoring system that provides multimedia learning contents for english Loaming on mobile environment. In order to design and implement the system, we have developed mobile multimedia contents from contents modeling based on the types of item, but also mobile interface to provide learning contents for learners effectively under limitation of mobile environment. The contents server in this system creates multimedia learning contents as XML document for each learner and provides those to learners through mobile interface using Wireless Application Protocol at anytime and anyplace.

  • In this letter, we present a layered structure of the Korean terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (TDMB) transmission system for multimedia broadcasting service and introduce a device called the Ensemble Remultiplexer which is designed to remultiplex the Ensemble Transport Interface (ETI) for T-DMB service. This letter describes the remultiplexing process of the Ensemble Remultiplexer.

  • In this paper, we designed and made a bicycle with tangible interface using a game to make a tangible interface for health-care system. In particular, through a survey of the preference of users, we have showed a tangible machine which is possible to recognize users' control as a form of tangible interface, have presented the controllable method of a game contents, have provided the contents reality maximized using game AI and game physics.
