Web-based virtual collaboration is increasingly gaining popularity in almost every area in our society due to the fact that it can bridge the gap imposed by time and geographical constraints. However, in medical field, such collaboration has been less popular than other fields. Some of the reasons were timeliness, security, and preciseness of the information they are dealing with. In this paper, we are proposing a web-based distributed medical collaboration system called Virtual Collaboration System for Medicine (VCSM) for medical doctors that meet the needs. The proposed system consists of two parts - multimedia presentation and recordable virtual collaboration. The former supports synchronized multimedia presentation using Synchronous Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL.) It allows synchronization of the contents of a PowerPoint presentation file and a video file. The presentation may be provided to the participants before the discussion begins. Next, in the virtual collaboration stage, participants can use text along with associated symbols during the discussion over the presented medical images. The symbols such as arrows or polygons can be set or removed dynamically to represent areas of interest in digital images using so called layered architecture that separates image layer from annotation layer. XML files are used to record participants' opinions along with the symbols over some particular images
Multimedia systems design generally requires a collaborative effort from a group of designers with a variety of backgrounds and tasks, such as content experts, instructional designers, media specialists, users, and so forth. The fact that the designers have totally different backgrounds and tasks may hinder their collaboration. This research develops a collaborative design tool for multimedia systems design, called the Designer's Cafe, with which multimedia designers can share their design knowledge on the Web freely. Designer's Cafe consists of three intelligent agents that are designed for supporting collaboration activities of multimedia designers. The intelligent agents are implemented by using JAVA SCRIPT and COLD FUSION. By using the tool, designers create, revise, and share their knowledge/ideas in very structured ways. The structured design process might enhance the collaboration activities of designers while designing a multimedia system within a virtual working space.

The perforrnance and portability of mobile applications can be greatly increased by adopting proxy modiles which exists between the conventional system and the device. When mobile devices collaborate with the conventional computers, there are problems to address: a battery life problem, limited input and output methods, and intermittent wireless connection. Those issues are magnified in the multimedia collaboration environment since it works in a real-time condition and the size of the message in the system is big in many cases. Additionally, because multimedia collaboration system softwares are too heavy and complex for mobile devices, it is veη hard to integrate them with conventional systems. In this paper, we describe our design and its implementation of a novel approach to map events (i.e. messages) using a proxy for mobile applications. We adopt a proxy to provide a content adaptation (i.e. transcoding) where the message contents are customized. Also, we design a mobile version publish/subscribe system to provide communication service for mobile device in loosely coupled and flexible manner. We present our empirical results which show that our design can be efficiently implemented and integrated with a conventional multimedia collaboration system.
Because of development of information communication and multimedia technology, the focus of M2M(Machine to Machine) intelligent network, multimedia collaboration environment, and transportation safety service is increased. This paper describes a multimedia replicated architecture based on Shepherd environment for transportation safety service. The relationship of information collection and utility is relationship of man to man, but is developed object to object by information communication and control system. This paper suggests a design of multimedia cyber collaboration environment based on M2M. This structure can make multimedia collaboration environment and fault tolerance, so on easily. Because M2M system does not affected to all system in spite of occurring to fault to a node or resource, it has a good condition for design of transportation safety service running on M2M.
This paper suggested a whiteboard for multimedia collaboration work. We implemented the whiteboard so that the users participated in collaborative work may refer shared media objects as the same view to others. In this paper, we discuss a method for increasing reliability of media data through whiteboard. This paper explains a performance analysis of a media data system running on distributed multimedia environment using the rule-based DEVS modeling and simulation techniques.
This paper explains an error process for multimedia collaboration works with session management running on vehicle network environment. This system consists of an FDA and FRA. FDA is an agent that detects an error by hooking techniques for multimedia system based on vehicle network environment with session management. FRA is a system that is suitable for recovering software error for multimedia system with session management based on vehicle network environment. This paper describes only FRA. When multiple local sessions is opened, each local session manager sends information of participant to global session manager and take current information about session of processing in network.
This paper suggested a cyber collaboration platform based on web for food safety service. We implemented the cyber collaboration platform for food safety service so that the users participated in collaborative work may refer shared media objects as the same view to others. In this paper, we discussed a model for increasing reliability of food safety data through N screen server and client model. This paper explained a performance analysis of a system with function comparison running on multimedia collaboration work based on web and N screen techniques.
We propose ESS_WMCE. This paper explains the design and implementation of the EDSS running on ESS_WMCE. EDSS is a synchronization error control system for web based multimedia collaboration environment. We have an error detection approach by using hooking method. The technique of an error transmission is a mended model of utilizing an application sharing system. DOORAE is a good framework model for supporting development on application for computer supported cooperated works. It has primitive service functions. Service functions are implemented with an object oriented concept. It is a system that is suitable for detecting and sharing a software error rapidly occurring on web based multimedia collaboration environment by using software techniques. It is able to share an error as well as providing URL synchronization to access shared objects. When an error occurs, this system detects an error by using hooking methods in MS-Windows API(Application Program Interface) function. If an error is found, it is able to provide an error sharing to access shared objects.
Recent advances in Internet-of-Things and wearable computing have established computationally sufficient infrastructure to remove the barriers of physical locations. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of remote collaboration, work-from-home, teleconferencing, online education, digital twin, and metaverse enriched with various configurations of augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, and extended reality. Beyond specialized niche wearable applications in the medical and entertainment domains, we aim to identify the underlying characteristics of smartglass-enabled killer applications for everyday use. In this paper, we analyze intermediary roles in remote collaboration consisting of authoritative supervisors, synergetic collaborators, and speculative explorers. We also propose technical components for smartglass-assisted interactive remote collaboration composed of personal tracking, teleconference, and interaction components. More specifically, the application tasks of each intermediary role and objectives of three functional components are defined and elaborated.
Advancements in mobile phone hardware and network connectivity made communication becoming more and more convenient. Compared to pictures or texts, people prefer to share videos to convey information. For intentions clearer, the way to annotating comments directly on the video are quite important issues. Recently there have been many attempts to make annotations on video. These previous works have many limitations that do not support user-defined handwritten annotations or annotating on local video. In this sense, we propose an augmented reality based real-time video annotation system which allowed users to make any annotations directly on the video freely. The contribution of this work is the development of a real-time video annotation system based on recent augmented reality platforms that not only enables annotating drawing geometry shape on video in real-time but also drastically reduces the production costs. For practical use, we proposed a real-time collaboration system based on the proposed annotation method. Experimental results show that the proposed annotation method meets the requirements of real-time, accuracy and robustness of the collaboration system.
