멀티미디어 매체의 지각된 특성이 학습 효과에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증적 연구 (An Empirical Study of Factors Influencing on the Learning Effects of Perceived Characteristics of Multimedia Media)

  • Recently, the rabid development of information technology has brought enormous changes in education. Consolidation of communications and multimedia technologies are enabling the new educational paradigm such as distance learning and virtual education. Furthermore, many studies in the education engineering field report that teaching using multimedia technologies more enhances students' performance than the traditional instructor-teaching method. However, little research regarding the education using multimedia has been done in the MIS filed. None of multimedia-related studies could be found in the top-ranked MIS journals published in Korea for the last five years, and only a few studies were found even worldwide. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate which features of multimedia software are most important to enhance the teaching results of students. From the previous research, we found out the specific features of the educational multimedia software which are considered to affect the students'performance, and defined the research variables related to those educational software features. And, based on the constructivism and motivation theory of the education engineering field a theoretical research model and research hypotheses were developed. Perceived usefulness of the class and a student's perceived interests in the class were used as surrogate variables to measure teaching performance. Total 277 students participated separately in one of the two multimedia classes which have continued for three weeks. One was C programming language class and the other was multimedia CD-title development class. Each student listened for the multimedia session of the class using multimedia software and, at the end of the multimedia session, answered the survey questionnaire. The results of the study show that motivation to the class and the contents of education were statistically significant to the students'performance in the class. That implies, not only in the traditional instructor-teaching method but also in the multimedia class, that the contents of education itself and student's motivation to the class are most important to raise instructional results.

기술.가정 교과 '수송기술' 단원에서 수업 자료의 제시 방법에 따른 학업 성취도와 학습 만족도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Academic Achievement and Learning Satisfaction According to the Presentation Method of the Multimedia Materials for 'Transportation Technology' Unit of Technology.Home Economics Subject)

  • 본 연구는 기술 가정교과 '수송기술' 단원의 수업시 강의식 수업인 통제집단과 교사가 멀티미디어 자료로 수업한 실험집단 1, 멀티미디어 자료에 내레이션을 넣어 동영상으로 제작하여 교실에서 보는 수업을 하는 실험집단 2 간의 수업 자료의 제시 방법에 따른 학업 성취도와 학습 만족도를 분석하고자 하는 것이다. 연구 대상은 기술교과를 수업하는 93명 여고생들이며, 6개 질문에 대한 응답자료는 SPSS통계 프로그램을 활용하여 분석하였고 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수업에 대한 학생들의 학습 만족도 응답 평균(M)은 교사가 멀티미디어 자료로 진행한 수업(실험집단 1)이 4.14로 가장 높고, 멀티미디어 자료에 내레이션을 넣은 동영상을 교실에서 보는 수업(실험집단 2)이 3.16, 강의식 수업(통제집단)이 보통보다 약간 아래 수준인 2.63으로 나와 멀티미디어 자료로 교사가 수업을 하는 것이 가장 바람직함 수업임을 보여준다. 둘째, 문항간 상관계수에서 보면 흥미있는 수업에서는 기억도와 내용 이해도가 높지만, 집중도가 떨어지면 기억도도 떨어짐을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 학업 성취도는 실험집단 1이 가장 높았으며, 실험집단 2는 통제집단과 유사한 수준이다. 학업 성취도를 높이기 위해서는 강의식 수업에서는 흥미를 높여야 하며, 내레이션을 포함한 동영상을 보는 교실수업에서는 수업 집중도를 높이는 방안이 요청된다.

  • In this paper, we propose a multimedia query language MQL which defines and manipulates multimedia data as integration of monomedia data in time and space. The MQL is designed for a multimedia data model, called the object-relationship model, and based on the multimedia object calculus which formally describes operations on multimedia data. The SQL- like syntax for class definition and object manipulation, such as retrieval, insert, update, and delete, is defined. We show how the MQL can represent the user queries using composite temporal-spatial class structures and various relationships, such as equivalence and sequence.

  • This paper aims to introduce some useful multimedia freewares, and also support Chinese instructor with discussing how to operate them for instructional design of multimedia language learning class. For this aims, this paper consists of three parts: First, instructional design. This part is focused to what kind of instructional model to be based on, for example, Dick & Carey model, ADDIE model, ASSURE model etc. This part introduces these models, and modifies ADDIE and ASSURE model to D.D.A.I.E.S and S.S.A.U.R.E.S as 'A(nalysis)' in these model may apply to the next 'D(evelopment)' on ADDIE, 'S(elect Methods, Media and Materials)' on ASSURE in the practical Chinese class. Second, Programme: What to use. This part is focused to what kind of free software we can use. In the web site online, there are huge free softwares so we usually hesitate to select and also don't know how to operate even though selected one of them. This part, accordingly, introduces ten of useful freewares and compares each other in terms of usefulness for Chinese instructors. Third, Programme: How to use. It is of no use just to know what to use but not to know how to operate, so this part describes how to use freewares like a kind of manual in detail as far as possible. In conclusion, we hope more Chinese instructors to learn and use more useful freewares for designing the better multimedia Chinese class by this paper.

Evaluation Metrics for Class Hierarchy in Object-Oriented Databases: Concurrency Control Perspectives

  • Object-oriented databases (OODBs) have been adopted for managing non-standard applications such as computer-aided design (CAD), office document management and many multimedia applications. One of the major characteristics of OODBs is class hierarchy where a subclass is allowed to inherit the definitions defined on its superclasses. In this paper, I present the evaluation metrics for class hierarchy quality in OODBs. These metrics are developed to determine if a concurrency control scheme can achieve good performance or not on a given class hierarchy. I first discuss the existing concurrency control schemes for OODBs. Then I provide evaluation metrics based on structural information and access frequency information in class hierarchies. In order to discuss significance of the proposed performance metrics, an analytical model is developed. Analysis results show that the performance metrics are important factor in concurrency control performance. I consider both single inheritance and multiple inheritance. The proposed metrics can be used to provide guidelines on how to design class hierarchy of an OODB for maximizing the performance of concurrency control technique.

Study on the Factors Influencing the Quality of a Cyber Lecture

  • There are numerous advantages of online education to the students and to the institution. There are important factors to be considered for a successful online education. The purposes of this paper are to investigate students' viewpoints, called factors, to the cyber class and analyze these factors to be a successful cyber class. For theses purposes, we developed and constructed the cyber lecture, and we surveyed student evaluations two times for the cyber lecture in the middle and at the end. We found that students view the cyber class with four factors. Assessments on factors were changed during the cyber class and were different according to students' background.

A Design and Implementation of Tangible Educational Contents

  • Currently on the school education site, various multimedia contents are used to effectively deliver knowledge to the students and increase interest in class. The majority of the multimedia contents currently used in classes are composed of visual and auditory information. This paper intends to maximize actuality and immersion in the content by adding olfactory information to the existing visual and auditory data. Tangible contents were developed based on the details of aromatic plants learned in the fifth grade of elementary school. The shape and explanation of the aromatic plants are displayed with visual and auditory information, and an aroma spraying application is used to allow the students to smell the aromatic plants. After conducting the class using the developed contents, the students' satisfaction of the class, as well as their overall academic understanding, were investigated. Upon doing so, it was discovered that the students' academic understanding and satisfaction increased in comparison to classes comprised of only visual and auditory contents.

  • We developed a XMAS (X Multimedia Analysis System) for analyzing the illegal and objectionable multimedia in Internet environment based on Web2.0. XMAS uses the MPEG-7 visual descriptor and multi-class SVM (support vector machine) and its performance (accuracy on precision) is about 91.6% for objectionable multimedia analysis and 99.9% for illegal movie retrieval.

  • 본 논문은 효율적인 프리젠테이션을 위한 이종 객체의 처리 방안에 대하여 설계를 중심으로 기술하였다. 이종 객체의 개별적인 특징을 살리기 위하여 각 미디어별로 세분화된 클래스를 두었다. 특히 멀티미디어 프리젠테이션을 위한 저작 과정에서 세분화된 각 클래스를 사용자 정의가 가능한 각각의 객체와 통합적으로 처리할 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다. 본 논문에서 제안한 데이터 구조와 처리 방법은 향후 또 다른 특화된 클래스 정의를 추가함으로써 손쉽게 데이터 객체의 처리 기능을 화장할 수 있도록 설계되었다.
