Application of ultra-high-temperature ceramics to oxidation-resistant and anti-ablation coatings for carbon-carbon composite (탄소-탄소 복합재의 내삭마 내산화 코팅을 위한 초고온 세라믹스의 적용)

  • As applications in extreme environments such as aerospace, high-energy plasma and radio-active circumstances increases, the demand for materials that require higher melting points, higher mechanical strength and improved thermal conductivity continues to increase. Accordingly, in order to improve the oxidation/abrasion resistance of the carbon-carbon composite, which is a typical heat-resistant material, a method of using ultra high temperature ceramics was reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of CVD coating, pack cementation and thermal plasma spraying, the simplest methods for synthesizing ultra-high temperature ceramics, were compared. As a method for applying the CVD coating method to C/C composites with complex shapes, the possibility of using thermodynamic calculation and CFD simulation was proposed. In addition, as a result of comparing the oxidation resistance of the TaC/SiC bi-layer coating and TaC/SiC multilayer coating produced by this method, the more excellent oxidation resistance of the multilayer coating on C/C was confirmed.

Fabrication and Electrical Properties of PZT/BFO Multilayer Thin Films

  • Lead zirconate titanate (PZT)/ bismuth ferrite (BFO) multilayer thin films have been fabricated by the spin-coating method on Pt(200 nm)/Ti(10 nm)/$SiO_2$(100 nm)/p-Si(100) substrates using $BiFeO_3$ and $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ metal alkoxide solutions. The PZT/BFO multilayer thin films show a uniform and void-free grain structure, and the grain size is smaller than that of PZT single films. The reason for this is assumed to be that the lower BFO layers play an important role as a nucleation site or seed layer for the formation of homogeneous and uniform upper PZT layers. The dielectric constant and dielectric losses decreased with increasing number of coatings, and the six-layer PZT/BFO thin film has good properties of 162 (dielectric constant) and 0.017 (dielectric losses) at 1 kHz. The remnant polarization and coercive field of three-layer PZT/BFO thin films were 13.86 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ and 37 kV/cm respectively.

Characteristics of Al Films Prepared by Oblique Angle Deposition (빗각 증착으로 제조한 Al 박막의 특성)

  • Oblique angle deposition (OAD) is a physical vapor deposition method which utilizes non-normal angles between the substrate and the vaporizing source. It has been known that tilting the substrate changes the properties of the film deposited on it, which was thought to be a result of morphological change of the film. In this study, OAD has been applied to prepare single and multilayer Al films by magnetron sputtering. The magnetron sputtering source of 4 inch diameter was used to deposit the films. Al films have been deposited on Si wafers and cold-rolled steel sheets. The multilayer films were prepared by changing the tilting angle upside down at each layer interval, which means that when the first layer was deposited at an angle of $+45^{\circ}$, the second layer was deposited at an angle of $-45^{\circ}$, and vice versa. The microstructure, surface roughness and reflectance of the films were investigated using a scanning electron microscope, a surface profiler and a spectrophotometer, respectively. The corrosion resistance was measured and compared using the salt spray test. The single layer film prepared at an oblique angle of $60^{\circ}$ prepared at other angles. However, for the multilayer films, the film prepared at an oblique angle of $45^{\circ}$ showed the most compact and featureless structure. The multilayer films were found to exhibit higher corrosion resistance than the single layer films.

Characterization of Hydrazine Solution Processed Multi-layered CuInSe2 Thin Films (하이드라진 용액법으로 형성된 CuInSe2 다층 박막 분석)

  • $CuInSe_2$ thin films which have been widely used for thin solar cells as a light absorber were prepared by hydrazine solution processing, and their microstructural properties were investigated. Hydrazine $CuInSe_2$ precursor solutions were prepared by dissolving $Cu_2S$, S, $In_2Se_3$ and Se powder in hydrazine solvent. Multilayer $CuInSe_2$ chalcopyrite phase thin films were prepared by repeating spin-coating process using the precursor solution. Unfortunately, the presence of the interfaces between each $CuInSe_2$ layer formed by multi-layer coating impeded grain growth across the interface. Here, by doing simple interface engineering to solve the limited grain growth issue, the large grained (${\sim}1{\mu}m$) $CuInSe_2$ thin films were obtained.

  • In this study, in order to fabricate sintered dental implant, the effects of HA, Ti and TiN on corrosion and biocompatibility, cell toxicity, osseointegration of electroless Cu-plated and sintered stainless steel implant were investigated using various characteristics. The effects of Ti/TiN/HA coating on the interface activation and surface characteristics of sintered stainless steels(SSS) by electron-beam physical vapor deposition(EB-PVD) method have been studied. Stainless steel compacts containing 2, 4, and 10 wt%Cu were prepared by electroless Cu-plating method which results in the increased homogenization in alloying powder. The specimens were coated with HA, Ti and TiN with few $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness respectively by EB-PVD method. The microstructures and phase analysis were conducted by using SEM. Biocompatibility were investigated in experimental dog. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiosat in 0.9% NaCl solution and corrosion surface was observed using SEM and XPS.

Wear Characteristics of Coated $Si_3N_4$-TiC Ceramic Tool (Coated $Si_3N_4$-TiC Ceramic 공구의 마모 특성)

  • Titanium carbide(TiC), Titanium nitride(TiN), and Titanium carbonnitride(Ti(C,N)) films were deposited on $Si_3N_4$-TiC composite cutting tools by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) using $TiCl_4-CH_4-H_2$, $TiCl_4-N_2-H_2$, and $TiCl_4-CH_4-N_2-H_2$ gas mixtures, respectively. The experimental results indicate that TiC coatings compared with TiN coatings on $Si_3N_4$ -TiC ceramic have an improved microstructural property, good thermal shock resistance, and good interfacial bonding. However TiN coatings compared with TiC coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good chemical stability. It is found by cutting test that coated insert compared with $Si_3N_4$-TiC ceramic have a superior flank and crater wear resistance. And multilayer coating compared with monolayer coating shows a improved wear resistance.

  • Titanium nitride and related overlayers produced by arc ion plating (AIP) are applied as commercial coatings in world-wide scale since the middle of 80s. Due to the achievements of low temperature deposition (LTD), they begin now to be used as wear and corrosion-resistant coatings for machine parts, besides applications on cemented carbide and high speed steel cutting tools. On the other side, TiN can be now applied successfully to brass, Al-alloy, ZnAl alloy articles as decorative coating through LTD. Various nitrides, carbonitrides, borides and other refractory compounds, such as (Ti, Al)N, TiCN, CrN, are used as the coatings for special heavy-duty working conditions instead of TiN since 90s. More and more multilayer coatings are applied now substituting single layer ones. Duplex processes are under development.

Statistical characterisation of end milling of AISI 52100 annealed bearing steel

  • The present paper is a contribution in characterising end milling process of AISI 52100 ball bearing steel through statistical analyses of variance (ANOVA). The latter has been performed to identify the effect of the cutting parameters on the machined surface roughness and the cutting tool life. Wear measurements have been carried on multilayer coated carbide inserts and the respective surface roughness has been recorded. Taguchi's technique has been adapted to conduct the design experiments in terms of orthogonal arrays according to the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut), the type of coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN) and lubricating condition. Regression analyses have conducted to the development of simplified empirical models that can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and tool wear in the present milling process.

  • TiAlN coatings are available in various industry fields as a wear resistant coating for high-speed machining, due to its high hardness, excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of TiAlN multilayer coatings is better than that of single TiN coatings. Most of TiAlN coated layers were formed by heat treatment of coating layers with a non-stoichiometric $Ti_xAl_{1-x}N$. In this study, TiAlN coated layer was prepared by R.F magnetron sputtering and investigated the thermal behavior for heat treatment at various temperature in tube furnace. The formation of large particles with porous microstructure and phase change from HCP to FCC were observed on coated layer during heat treatment over $850^{\circ}C$ and it reduced the corrosion resistance of coated TiAlN layers.
