  • The purpose of this study was to design a development frame for multicultural science program and develop a corresponding program using the frame. This study organized a development frame to design a multicultural science education program based on the culturally responsive teaching theory. This development frame consisted of the elements of purpose, teaching examples, teaching and learning methods, and assessment. This program consisted of the guideline for class teaching courses, reading materials, student worksheet, and teachers' reference materials. Based on this development frame, a multicultural science education program was developed, which was comprised of seven activities for elementary and middle school students. Each activity of the program included the concept and inquiry related to science education. In particular, by connecting the concept of science with the cultural characteristics of various countries, the activity made students aware of cultural diversity and the commonness of science principles. Compared to other subjects, the science education field has not actively undertaken studies on multicultural education. In term of dealing with universal principles, science education is suitable for making students aware of commonness. Accordingly, this gives rise to the need to draw cultural characteristics based on basic studies such as the analysis of science textbooks in various countries and develop culturally responsive programs utilizing the outcomes.

  • At public elementary schools in areas where multicultural students are concentrated, they have difficulty understanding classes due to their lack of Korean proficiency. Multicultural teaching and learning materials produced by teachers have not been managed or reused and stored individually. To overcome this situation and increase students' learning effect, the study applied digital curation to multicultural teaching and learning materials and suggested to link the materials with a platform that can be stored, used, and shared. The study was based on B Elementary School in A City, a multicultural international innovation school under the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education. The process of applying digital curation to multicultural teaching and learning materials was analyzed by collecting, organizing/selecting teaching and learning materials, categorizing subject, classifying subtopic, and linking with platforms. Practical issues and policy suggestions in school settings were also proposed.

From May to December of the year 2015, the researcher conducted continuous e-mail interviews as well as in-depth interviews with mentors who participated in multicultural mentoring at I university. The interview contents were transcribed and comparative analysis was done. The result of the study is as follows. The process of multicultural perception change of mentors were discovered to be change in stereotypes, prejudice and ideas on multiculture, difference detection and social desire. They realized that stereotypes and prejudice were the errors of generalization due to their ideas on multiculture which were developed through media. Through mentoring activities the mentors reflected on the inherent negative ideas on multiculture, thus changing their ideas and thoughts. Also, the difference detection acknowledged cultural diversity along with the understanding of the cultural environment of mentees. Social desire expressed their wish for the change of perception in the cultures of others along with the positive change of multicultural perception through mentees. Thus, it was discovered that multicultural mentoring activities are sufficient prerequisites to change the social perception of multiculture from personal interest.

  • This research analyzed reality of multicultural education of Korea and suggested policy implication through a questionnaire survey of teachers, students, and parents in elementary schools, Daegu City. Multicultural policies in Korea mainly helped a member of multicultural family who immigrated into Korea to learn Korean language and culture. Thus, the common people have a few chances to have multicultural education; however they mainly experienced multiculture indirectly through mass media. Therefore they had low level of understanding and satisfaction and their consciousness was narrow. Most of people completely come out in sympathy with that multicultural education should be taught at school. To overcome the current issues of multicultural education, its goals, contents and tasks should be clearly established. Multicultural education is taught from elementary school in holistic approach; however, methods of learning and teaching are different according to a curriculum.
