  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the determinants on the absence of after-school care among elementary students. This study is based on the National Children and Youth Panel Survey(2010) data and analyzed through Binary Logit Model and Multinominal Logit Model. The Following results were obtained: First, school grades, the number of siblings, mother's education, family type by parental employment, family structure, family type by parental nativity, and family income, all affected the absence of after-school care. Second, the absence days of after-school care was affected by different factors. 1day-2days a week in absence of after-school was more likely to increase among children with more siblings and an older father. On the other hand, spending over 3-4days a week without after-school care was more likely to increase among mothers with lower education, dual-earner families, multicultural families, lower family incomes, small cities and rural areas. Based on the results of this study, we agree with the generalization and the diversification of after-school care policy for elementary school students.

To this end, we surveyed 960 multicultural parents who responded to MAPS' multicultural youth panel 5th year data for parents. The main results are as follows. First, the daily life stress of multicultural parents did not affect the learning care style of their children. Second, parental efficacy was found to be mediating between daily life stress of multicultural parents and child's learning care style. In other words, the positive role of parental efficacy plays an important role in the child's learning care style by improving the stress-relieving ability of multicultural parents.

This study used data from the second, third, and fourth waves of the middle school student cohort (N=2,178) of the Korean Children-Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). The dependent variable was multicultural acceptability. The independent variables were peer relationship and teacher relationship. The major longitudinal findings of this study are as follows: First, peer relationships, teacher relationships and multicultural acceptability increased with time. Second, peer relationship showed a significant effect on the multicultural acceptability over time. Finally, the teacher relationship showed a significant effect on the multicultural acceptability over time. These results show differentiation with previous cross-sectional studies of multicultural acceptability. Furthermore, it is expected that this study will provide educational implications for the cultivation of multicultural acceptability.

  • This study used the raw data of the 15th (2019) Korean Youth Health Risk Behavior Survey to investigate the risk factors of the health-risk behaviors of Korean multicultural adolescents on the subjective oral symptoms. The scope of the multicultural family was limited to children of immigrant women's families married to Korean men and immigrant male families married to Korean women, and 572 were selected as the final study subjects. The sociodemographic variables were surveyed as gender, grade, economic level, and school performance. The health risk behaviors included drinking, smoking, medication, stress, sleep satisfaction, suicidal thoughts, depression, and brushing before bedtime. The oral symptoms examined were toothache, gum pain, and halitosis. As a result, toothache was related to drinking, toothbrushing before sleep, stress, sleep satisfaction, suicidal thoughts, and depression. Gum pain was associated with drug use, sleep satisfaction, suicidal thoughts, and depression. Halitosis was associated with medication, brushing before sleep, stress, suicidal thoughts, and depression. In terms of health risk factors, drinking, stress, and sleep satisfaction were risk factors for toothache. Smoking, sleep satisfaction, and suicidal thoughts were risk factors for gum pain. The presence of toothbrushing and stress were risk factors for halitosis. In conclusion, a policy system is needed to support oral health education programs nationally at times, such as after-school activities or club activities, to promote oral health for teenagers.

  • This research investigated the influence of subjective well-being on attitude towards minority group members. In a cross-sectional data, the higher subjective well-being predicted more positive cognitive beliefs, affective feelings, and behavioral intentions towards foreign laborers and children of international couples. The causal link from subjective well-being to greater tolerance for cultural diversity was found again in a large longitudinal sample. The rate of life satisfaction increase from Time 1 to Time 2 significantly predicted multicultural receptiveness at Time 2. Overall, the findings suggest that subjective well-being may contribute to the formation of favorable attitude towards minority group members.

  • This study investigated the information behavior and media use of Korean young adults with immigration background, focusing on the influence of their social and cultural context. 11 young adults between 13 and 18 with immigration background participated in the study. The participants provided data via daily logs about information needs, written surveys about media use, and two times of in-depth interviews. The data gathered from these diverse methods were used in analyzing the participants' daily problem situations and attempts to satisfy information needs using media. The information needs of young adults with immigration background in their everyday lives included study, leisure, appearance, self-development, living, and career searching - study and leisure were the most needed information subjects. The young adults who participated in this study were actively using media to solve their information needs. For them, media was an emotional support, a tool to express their own identities, a solution that gives all the answers, and a good companion to spend time with. The proposed strategies about young adults' media use in this study could be used in planning library services for children of families with immigration background.
