  • When we derive multi-scale databases from a source spatial database, thegeometries and topological relations in the source database are transformed according to a predefined set of constraints. This means that the derived databases should be checked to see if the constraints are respected during the construction or updates of databases and to maintain the consistency of multi-scale databases. In this paper, we focus on the topological consistency between the source and derived databases, which is one of the important constraints to respect. In particular, we deal with the method of assessment of topological consistency, when 2-dimensional objects are collapsed to 1-dimensional ones. We introduce eight types of topological relations between 2-dimensional objects and 19 topological ones between 1-dimensional objects and propose four different strategies to convert 2-dimensional topological relations in the source database to 1-dimensional ones objects in the target database. With these strategies, we guarantee the topological consistency between multi-scale databases.

  • For a design of multi-layer armor, the extensive full scale or sub-scale penetration test data are required. In generally, the collection of penetration data is in need of time-consuming and expensive processes. However, the application of numerical or analytical method is very limited due to poor understanding about penetration mechanics. In this paper, we have developed a neural network analyzer which can be used as a design tool for a new armor. Calculation results show that the developed neural network analyzer can predict relatively exact penetration depth of a new armor through the effective analysis of the pre-existing penetration database.

  • Fading effect of old pictures and printings is shown up differently according to the ink property, temperature, humidity, illuminants, and so on. Faded image enhancement techniques based on illuminant estimation are proposed such as the gray world algorithm and white patch retinex methods. However, conventional simple operators are not suitable for enhancing faded images because partial fading effect is appeared differently. Thus, this paper presents a color enhancement algorithm based on integrating correction coefficients for faded images. First, the proposed method adopts local process by using multi-scale average mask. The coefficients for each multi-scale average mask are obtained to apply the gray world algorithm. Then, integrating the coefficients with weights is performed to calculate correction ratio for red and blue channels in the gray world assumption. Finally, the enhanced image is obtained by applying the integrated coefficients to the gray world algorithm. In the experimental results, the proposed method reproduces better colors for both wholly and partially faded images compared with the previous methods.

  • In video surveillance system, the exposure of a person's face is a serious threat to personal privacy. To protect the personal privacy in large amount of videos, an automatic face detection method is required to locate and mask the person's face. However, in real-world surveillance videos, the effectiveness of existing face detection methods could deteriorate due to large variations in facial appearance (e.g., facial pose, illumination etc.) or degraded face (e.g., occluded face, low-resolution face etc.). This paper proposes a new face detection method based on multi-level facial features. In a video frame, different kinds of spatial features are independently extracted, and analyzed, which could complement each other in the aforementioned challenges. Temporal domain analysis is also exploited to consolidate the proposed method. Experimental results show that, compared to competing methods, the proposed method is able to achieve very high recall rates while maintaining acceptable precision rates.

  • This study presents the efficiency of simulating structural systems using a method that combines a simplified component model (SCM) and rigorous component model (RCM). To achieve a realistic simulation of structural systems, a numerical model must be adequately capturing the detailed behaviors of real systems at various scales. However, capturing all details represented within an entire structural system by very fine meshes is practically impossible due to technological limitations on computational engineering. Therefore, this research develops an approach to simulate large-scale structural systems that combines a simplified global model with multiple detailed component models adjusted to various scales. Each correlated multi-scale simulation model is linked to others using a multi-level hierarchical modeling simulation method. Simulations are performed using nonlinear finite element analysis. The proposed method is applied in an analysis of a simple reinforced concrete structure and the Reuipu Elementary School (an existing structure), with analysis results then compared to actual onsite observations. The proposed method obtained results very close to onsite observations, indicating the efficiency of the proposed model in simulating structural system behavior.

  • This paper proposes a novel texture segmentation method using Bayesian image segmentation method and SOM(Self Organization feature Map). Multi-scale wavelet coefficients are used as the input of SOM, and likelihood and a posterior probability for observations are obtained from trained SOMs. Texture segmentation is performed by a posterior probability from trained SOMs and MAP(Maximum A Posterior) classification. And the result of texture segmentation is improved by context information. This proposed segmentation method shows better performance than segmentation method by HMT(Hidden Markov Tree) model. The texture segmentation results by SOM and multi-sclae Bayesian image segmentation technique called HMTseg also show better performance than by HMT and HMTseg.

  • Recently, an approach for nano-scale material deformation has been developed that couples the atomistic and continuum approaches using Finite Element Method (FEM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD). However, this approach still has problems to connect two approaches because of the difference of basic assumptions, continuum and atomistic modeling. To solve this problem, an alternative way is developed that connects the QuasiMolecular Dynamics (QMD) and molecular dynamics. In this paper, we suggest the way to make and validate the MD-QMD coupled model.

  • Turbulent flows with wavy wall are simulated using Residual-based Variational Multiscale Method (RB-VMS) which is proposed by Bazilves et al(2007) as new Large Eddy Simulation methodology. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using Isogeometric analysis which adopt the basis function as NURBS. The Reynolds number is 6760 based on the bulk velocity and averaged channel height. And the amplitude (${\alpha}/{\lambda}$) of wavy wall is 0.05. The computational domain is $2{\lambda}{\times}1.05{\lambda}{\times}{\lambda}$ in the streamwise, wall normal and spanwise direction. Mean quantities and turbulent statistics near wavy wall are compared with DNS results of Cherukat et al.(1998). The predicted results show good agreement with reference data.
