  • Al-doped ZnO(AZO)/Ag/AZO multi-layer films deposited on PET substrate by RF magnetron sputtering have a much better electrical properties than Al-doped ZnO single-layer films. The multi-layer structure consisted of three layers, AZO/Ag/AZO, the optimum thickness of Ag layers was determined to be $112{\AA}$ for high optical transmittance and good electrical conductivity. With about $1800{\AA}$ thick AZO films, the multi-layer showed a high optical transmittance in the visible range of the spectrum. The electrical and optical properties of AZO/Ag/AZO were changed mainly by thickness of Ag layers. A high quality transparent electrode, having a resistance as low as $6\;W/{\square}$ and a high optical transmittance of 87% at 550 nm, was obtained by controlling Ag deposition parameters.

  • The effects of carbide and matrix structures on the abrasion wear resistance of multi-component white cast irons with 3.0 mass%C have been studied in this paper. Four different heats were poured in order to obtain the specimens with different combinations of the carbide structures: a basic iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%Cr-5.0 mass%V-5.0 mass% Mo-12.5mass%W)for M$_{6}$C and M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides, and a Cr free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr free free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5 mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr white cast iron was also poured to compare its wear resistance with those of the multi-component white cast irons. In the as-cast condition, the range of abrasive wear rate(Rw=mg/min) was from 4.15 to 5.98 . The lowest Rw, which means the highest wear resistance, was obtained in the basic iron with nodular MC, lamellar M$_{2}$C and cellular M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides. On the other hand, the Rw of the high Cr white cast iron ranked between the basic iron and the Mo and W free iron. In each alloy, the Rw of air hardened or tempered specimen was lower than that of the as-cast one because of the change of matrix structures by the heat treatments. The Rw of the hear treated speci-mens increased in the order Mo and W free iron, basic iron, Cr free iron, high Cr iron, and V free iron.n.n.n.

  • The use of geothermal energy has been increased for economic and environmental friendly utilization. Ground thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance are very important parameters in the design of geothermal heat pump system. This paper presents an experimental study of heat exchange rate of U and W type ground heat exchangers (GHEs) measured by thermal performance tests (TPTs). U and W type GHEs were installed in a partially saturated dredged soil deposit, and TPTs were conducted to evaluate heat exchange rates under 100-hr continuous operation condition. The heat exchange rates were also calculated by analytical models to estimate borehole thermal resistances and were compared with experimental results. It comes out that multi-pole and equivalent diameter (EQD) models resulted in more accurate agreement than shape factor (SF) model which is currently more often used.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) was prepared from polycarbonate diol (PCD), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Then, waterborne acrylic polyurethane dispersion (AUD) was synthesized by reacting the WPUD with different types of acrylate monomers, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). Subsequently, the AUD was mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to yield a conductive coating solution, and the mixture was coated on the polycarbonate substrate. The pencil hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the coating films from AUD were improved than those from WPUD, while the electrical conductivity of the coating films from AUD was decreased than that of WPUD. Also, the effect of acrylate types on the properties of coating films was investigated. The AUD obtained from HEMA showed the strongest pencil hardness, while the AUD obtained from MMA exhibited the strongest abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and electrical conductivity among several types of acrylate monomers.

  • Acorenone, a diterpene isolated from Acorus gramineus, showed strong resistance inhibitory activity against multi-drug resistant microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus SA2, which has resistance to 10 usual antibiotics including chloramphenicol (Cm). At the level of $5\;{\mu}g/ml$ when combined with $50\;{\mu}g/ml$ of Cm. Bacterial resistance to Cm is due to the presence in resistant bacteria of an enzyme, chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT), which catalyses the acetyl-CoA dependent acetylation of the antibiotic at C-3 hydroxyl group. To elucidate the mechanism of resistant inhibitory effect, the acorenone which had the strongest resistant inhibitory activity, was investigated on the CAT assay. As the result, the combination of Cm and acorenone showed the strongest inhibitory activity on CAT as noncompetitive and dose dependent manner.

  • Thirty six essential oils from herb drugs entered in Korean official formulary, which are frequently used in oriental region, were tested for antibiotic resistance inhibition. When the oils were combined with ampicillin (Am) or amoxicillin (Amx) they showed significant inhibitory effects on the growth of multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus SA2 in considerably low concentration. The most effective combinations were oils from Acanthopanacis Cortex ($0.49{\mu}g/mL$) with Am and Cnidii Rhizoma and Lonicerae Flos (2.77 and $2.79{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) with Amx as shown in minimum resistance inhibitory concentrations.

  • Resistance switching memory cells were fabricated using atomically dispersed Pt-$SiO_2$ thin film prepared via RF co-sputtering. The memory cell can switch between a low-resistance-state and a high-resistance-state reversibly and reproducibly through applying alternate voltage polarities. Percolated conducting paths are the origin of the low-resistance-state, while trapping electrons in the negative U-center in the Pt-$SiO_2$ interface cause the high-resistance-state. Intermediate resistance-states are obtained through controlling the compliance current, which can be applied to multi-level operation for high memory density. It is found that the resistance value is related to the capacitance of the memory cell: a 265-fold increase in resistance induces a 2.68-fold increase in capacitance. The exponential growth model of the conducting paths can explain the quantitative relationship of resistance-capacitance. The model states that the conducting path generated in the early stage requires a larger area than that generated in the last stage, which results in a larger decrease in the capacitance.

  • This study determined the thermal resistance of Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes in multi-grain soymilk and proposes processing conditions that meet the national standard for retort food products in Korea. D and z values were calculated from thermal inactivation kinetic curves after heating at 55, 60, and $65^{\circ}C$. The D value for B. cereus at $55^{\circ}C$ was the highest (22.8 min), followed by that for E. coli O157:H7 (18.8 min) and L. monocytogenes (17.6 min). At $60-65^{\circ}C$, the order was L. monocytogenes ($D_{60-65^{\circ}C}=3.4-0.9min$), E. coli O157:H7 (3.0-0.3 min), and B. cereus (1.2-0.3 min). The z values for these species were 5.2, 5.5, and $7.7^{\circ}C$, respectively. The Korean national standard for retort food products was achieved by thermal processing at $124{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 0.3-2.2 min. This study provides useful data for ensuring both the microbiological safety and product quality of multi-grain soymilk products.
