  • The goal of the multi-reservoir operation planning is to provide an optimal release plan that maximize the reservoir storage and hydropower generation while minimizing the spillages. However, the reservoir operation is difficult due to the uncertainty associated with inflows. In order to consider the uncertain inflows in the reservoir operating problem, we present a Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) model based on the markov decision process (MDP). The objective of the model is to maximize the expected value of the system performance that is the weighted sum of all expected objective values. With the SDP model, multi-reservoir operating rule can be derived, and it also generates the steady state probabilities of reservoir storage and inflow as output. We applied the model to the Geum-river basin in Korea and could generate a multi-reservoir monthly operating plan that can consider the uncertainty of inflow.

  • It is a difficult task for decision makers(DMs) to choose an appropriate release plan which balances the conflicts between water storage and hydro-electric energy generation in a multi-reservoir operation problem. In this study, we proposed a DEA-based ranking procedure by which the DM can rank the potential alternatives and select the best solution among the Pareto-optimal solutions. The proposed procedure can resolve the problem of mix inefficiency that may cause errors in measuring the efficiency of alternatives. We applied the proposed procedure to the multi-reservoir operation problem for the Geum-River basin and could choose the best efficient solution from the Pareto-set which were generated by the Coordinated Multi-Reservoir Operating Model.

  • Determining sizes and the locations of reservoirs in the water distribution system(WDS) with multi-reservoirs is much difficult than that with single reservoir. The extended period simulation(EPS) models provide more comprehensive analysis of water distribution systems than the steady-state models can do. Therefore, EPS models should be applied to the WDS with multi-reservoirs. This study is to investigate the variations of required reservoir sizes and residual nodal pressures according to reservoir locations. In this study, EPS was applied to analyze an artificial and a real WDS under several water demand patterns. As a result, it was found that water demand patterns make no significant differences in the determining of the reservoir size, if they have similar peaking factors. And the variations of the peaking factor should be carefully checked in the design and the analysis of the WDS with multi-reservoirs, because the peaking factor itself will affect the minimum allowable sizes of reservoirs in those systems.

  • Temperature monitoring techniques per depth have been recognized as important information in the reservoir environmental issues. However, old measurement method by single temperature sensor and cable type has demerits not only for its limited measuring location but for its inconvenience of users. In this study, multi-channel temperature monitoring system was introduced and executed experiment for actual application feasibility evaluation. Both type of new techniques such as multi-channel addressable built-in temperature sensor and fiber optic multi sensor were tested in Daechung and Imha reservoir. As a result, it was proved that these kinds of temperature monitoring skills had very good performance and availability for a output of spatial, simultaneous thermal distribution focused on the user's convenience. And these measuring method and thermal data will be useful for providing basic information in a water resources investigation like reservoir stratification and environmental problems.

  • The application of conventional method for optimizing firm water supply and hydro-electric power generation has some limitation during abnormal or extreme drought periods. Hashimoto et al. (1982) suggested there risk evaluation criteria such as reliability, resilience, and vulnerability. These three criteria have been incorporated into a mixed-integer programming model for evaluating the possible performance of water- supply reservoir (Moy et al., 1986; Srinivasan et al., 1999). However, till now, these kind of researches have been conducted only for water-supply reservoir. Therefore there have been no other study for multi-purpose dam including hydro-electric power generation. This study presents an improved formulation of the previous model for evaluating a multi-purpose reservoir system operation considering water supply and hydro-electric power generation. The modified model was applied to the Daechung multi-purpose reservoir system in the Keum river basin to demonstrate the efficiency of the improved formulation.

  • Abstract The need for integrated reservoir system operation become more intense as the demands from the system increase. A deterministic, three-dimensional discrete incremental dynamic programming approach is presented to derive reservoirs system operational planning strategies. The developed H3DP model optimizes the monthly operation of the Hwachon and Soyang Projects on the North Han river and Chungju Main Project on the South Han river. By using the H3DP model, Hwachon project was reevaluated as a component of the upstream multipurpose storage reservoirs in the basin based on 1993 hydrology. This case study demonstrates the practical use of the developed model for the basin multi-reservoir system operation in an integrated, multipurpose fashion.

  • The Upper Fenhe Reservoir System studied by KOWACO to supply water to Taiyuan City, capital of Shanxi Province in China, is a very complicated one. Many reservoirs will be connected serially and it will be operated as a multi-purpose and multi-criteria system because several objectives and appraisal functions are taken into account regarding system operation. For reservoirs in the system, the critical system operation objectives are to minimize water shortage and reservoir sediment. Furthermore the reservoir system will be jointed with a large-scale pumping system, namely Yellow River Diversion Project. The water development cost in the Yellow River Diversion Project is much higher than that of reservoir system, and around the year 2020 the diversion volume will be twice of the surface water available in the Upper Fenhe Basin. In this study, an optimization technique for connecting the system of reservoirs and pumping station was developed to solve a conjunctive low River Diversion Project. The developed scheme includes a suggestion on the combining methodology of real reservoir system and pumping system using imaginary reservoir concept for the Yellow River Diversion Project, and practical examples to the minimization problem of the Yellow River diversion satisfying other reservoir operation objectives.

  • In this study, die turning injection(DTI) mold design for manufacturing reservoir fluid tanks used for cooling in-vehicle batteries, inverters, and motors was conducted based on multi-field CAE. Part design, performance evaluation, and mold design of the reservoir fluid tank was performed. The frequency response characteristics through modal and harmonic response analysis to satisfy the automotive performance test items for the designed part were examined. Analysis of re-melting characteristics and structural analysis of the driving part for designing the rotating die of the DTI mold were performed. Part design was possible when the natural frequency performance value of 32Hz or higher was satisfied through finite element analysis, and the temperature distribution and deformation characteristics of the part after injection molding were found through the first injection molding analysis. In addition, it can be seen that the temperature change of the primary part greatly influences the re-melting characteristics during the secondary injection. The minimum force for driving the turning die of the designed mold was calculated through structural analysis. Hydraulic system design was possible. Finally, a precise and efficient DTI mold design for the reservoir fluid tank was possible through presented multi-field CAE process.

  • In the daily multi-reservoir operating problem, monthly storage targets can be used as principal operational guidelines. In this study, we tested the use of a simple back-propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to derive monthly storage guideline for daily Coordinated Multi-reservoir Operating Model (CoMOM) of the Han-River basin. This approach is based on the belief that the optimum solution of the daily CoMOM has a good performance, and the ANN model trained with the results of daily CoMOM would produce effective monthly operating guidelines. The optimum results of daily CoMOM is used as the training set for the back-propagation ANN model, which is designed to derive monthly reservoir storage targets in the basin. For the input patterns of the ANN model, we adopted the ratios of initial storage of each dam to the storage of Paldang dam, ratios of monthly expected inflow of each dam to the total inflow of the whole basin, ratios of monthly demand at each dam to the total demand of the whole basin, ratio of total storage of the whole basin to the active storage of Paldang dam, and the ratio of total inflow of the whole basin to the active storage of the whole basin. And the output pattern of ANN model is the optimal final storages that are generated by the daily CoMOM. Then, we analyzed the performance of the ANN model by using a real-time simulation procedure for the multi-reservoir system of the Han-river basin, assuming that historical inflows from October 1st, 2004 to June 30th, 2007 (except July, August, September) were occurred. The simulation results showed that by utilizing the monthly storage target provided by the ANN model, we could reduce the spillages, increase hydropower generation, and secure more water at the end of the planning horizon compared to the historical records.

  • Future uncertainty on water demand caused by future climate condition and water consumption leads a difficulty to determine the reservoir operation rule for supplying sufficient water to users. It is, thus, important to operate reservoirs not only for distributing enough water to users using the limited water resources but also for preventing floods and drought under the unknown future condition. In this study, the reservoir storage is determined in the first stage when future condition is unknown, and then, water distribution to users and river stream is optimized using the available water resources from the first stage decision using 2-stage stochastic linear programming (2-SLP). The objective function is to minimize the difference between target and actual water storage in reservoirs and the water shortage in users and river stream. Hedging rule defined by a precaution against severe drought by restricting outflow when reservoir storage decreases below a target, is also applied in the reservoir operation rule for improving the model applicability to the real system. The developed model is applied in a system with five reservoirs in the Han River basin, Korea to optimize the multi-reservoir system under various future water demand scenarios. Three multi-purposed dams - Chungju, Hoengseong, and Soyanggang - are considered in the model. Gwangdong and Hwacheon dams are also considered in the system due to the large capacity of the reservoirs, but they are primarily for water supply and power generation, respectively. As a result, the water demand of users and river stream are satisfied in most cases. The reservoirs are operated successfully to store enough water during the wet season for preparing the coming drought and also for reducing downstream flood risk. The developed model can provide an effective guideline of multi-reservoir operation rules in the basin.
