To achieve an efficient implementation of 114 operation modes, some design optimizations are considered including block-serial layered decoding scheme, a memory reduction technique based on the min-sum decoding algorithm and a novel method for generating the cyclic shift values of parity check matrix. From fixed-point simulations, decoding performance and optimal hardware parameters are analyzed. The designed LDPC decoder is verified by FPGA implementation, and synthesized with a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. It has 380,000 gates and 52,992 bits RAM, and the estimated throughput is about 164 ~ 222 Mbps at 56 MHz@1.8 V.

  • This paper proposes a high-throughput and multi-mode quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder based on a fully parallel structure. The proposed QC-LDPC decoder employs the fully parallel structure to provide very high throughput. The high interconnection complexity, which is the general problem in the fully parallel structure, is solved by using a broadcasting-based sum-product algorithm and proposing a low-complexity cyclic shift network. The high complexity problem, which is caused by using a large amount of check node processors and variable node processors, is solved by proposing a combined check and variable node processor (CCVP). The proposed QC-LDPC decoder can support the multi-mode decoding by proposing a routing-based interconnection network, the flexible CCVP and the flexible cyclic shift network. The proposed QC-LDPC decoder is operated at 100 MHz clock frequency. The proposed QC-LDPC decoder supports multi-mode decoding and provides 8.1 Gbps throughput for a (1944, 1620) QC-LDPC code.

  • For LDPC decoding, received symbols are splitted bit by bit based using the received in-phase and quadrature components. The method of bit-splitting is affected on decoding performance because its method depend on distance over symbol constellation. Therefore this paper propose the bit split method using the sector information with sacrifice a little performance loss compared to Euclidean distance method. Futhermore DVB-S2 specification supports BC(Backward Compactible) mode which using the hierarchical modulation method, this paper also analyze the decoding performance according to deviation angle of 8PSK constellation for various LDPC coding rates.

  • This paper describes a circuit-level optimization of DFU(decoding function unit) for LDPC decoder which is used in wireless communication systems including WiMAX and WLAN. A new design of DFU based on sign-magnitude arithmetic instead of two's complement arithmetic is proposed, resulting in 18% reduction of gate count for 96 DFUs array used in mobile WiMAX LDPC decoder. A multi-mode LDPC decoder for mobile WiMAX standard is designed using the proposed DFU. The LDPC decoder synthesized using a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library with 50 MHz clock has 268,870 gates and 71,424 bits RAM, and it is verified by FPGA implementation.

A novel memory reduction technique devised using the min-sum decoding algorithm reduces the size of check-node memory by 47% as compared to conventional method. From fixed-point modeling and Matlab simulations for various bit-widths, decoding performance and optimal hardware parameters such as fixed-point bit-width are analyzed. The designed LDPC decoder is verified by FPGA implementation, and synthesized with a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. It has 219,100 gates and 45,036 bits RAM, and the estimated throughput is about 164~212 Mbps at 50 MHz@2.5v.

  • In this paper, the BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of a DVB-T2(Second Generation Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting System) in MISO(Multiple Input Single Output) transmission mode is evaluated by the computer simulation. In the DVB-T2 receiver, an IDD(Iterative Demapping and Decoder) technique is employed that exchanges extrinsic information between the demapper and the LDPC decoder. Simulation results show that the IDD-based DVB-T2 receiver in MISO transmission mode provides 2dB gain at BER of $10^{-4}$ but suffer from the frequency offsets between transmit antennas.

  • In this paper, BER performance of LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Check) decoder for WiMAX is analyzed, and optimal design conditions of LDPC decoder are derived. The min-sum LDPC decoding algorithm which is based on an approximation of LLR sum-product algorithm is modeled and simulated by Matlab, and it is analyzed that the effects of LLR approximation bit-width and maximum iteration cycles on the bit error rate(BER) performance of LDCP decoder. The parity check matrix for IEEE 802.16e standard which has block length of 2304 and code rate of 1/2 is used, and AWGN channel with QPSK modulation is assumed. The simulation results show that optimal BER performance is achieved for 7 iteration cycles and LLR bit-width of (8,6).
