Design and Evaluation of a Multi-layer Interior PM Synchronous Motor for High-Speed Drive Applications

  • In general, surface mounted PM synchronous motors (SPMSMs) are mainly adopted as a driving motor for high-speed applications, because they have high efficiency and high power density. However, the SPMSMs have some weak points such as the increase of magnetic reluctance and additional losses as a consequence of using a non-magnetic sleeve. Especially, the magneto-motive force (MMF) in the air-gap of the SPMSMs is weakened due to the magnetically increased resistance. For that reason, a large amount of PM is consumed to meet the required MMF. Nevertheless, it cannot help using the sleeve in order to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly in high-speed rotation. Thus, in this paper, a multi-layer interior PM synchronous motor (IPMSM) not using the sleeve is presented and designed as an alternative of a SPMSM. Both motors are evaluated by test results based on a variety of characteristics required for an air blower system of a fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Having very strong current on the west coast with up to 10 m tidal range, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) in Korea. On the south west regions between many islands that create strong current in the narrow channels. The rotor is one of the essential components which can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of rotor can be determined by various parameters including number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameters and etc. This paper introduces the multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system which can be applied to offshore jetties and piers effectively. Various cases of VAT turbine were designed. Specifically, the number of blades and turbine shape are changed in several cases. Also, performance analysis was carried out by CFD.

Because of the very strong current on the west coast, with a tidal range of up to 10 m, there are many suitable sites for the application of TCP (tidal current power) in Korea. In the southwest region, a strong current is created in the narrow channels between the numerous islands. A rotor is an essential component that can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of a rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of a rotor can be determined using various parameters, including the number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameter, etc. There are many offshore jetties and piers with high current velocities. Thus, a VAT (vertical axis turbine) system, which can generate power regardless of flow direction changes, could be effectively applied to cylindrical structures. A VAT system could give an advantage to a caisson-type breakwater because it allows water to circulate well. This paper introduces a multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system. A Savonius turbine was designed, and a performance analysis was carried out using CFD. A physical model was also demonstrated in CWC, and the results are compared with CFD.

  • 플라이휠 에너지 저장 장치는 잉여 전기를 회전관성을 통해 운동 에너지로 저장하는 장치로, 회전의 중심이 되는 축과 외부의 플라이휠로 구성이 된다. 수치해석을 위한 일반적 프로그램들은 3차원의 모델을 통하여 구조해석 및 주파수 응답 등의 해석을 수행하게 된다. 허나 상용 프로그램을 이용한 동역학적 해석의 응용은 매우 어려운 실정이며, 사용자가 그 방법을 익히는 것 또한 쉽지 않다. 이러한 문제들을 보완하고자 동역학적 해석을 위한 프로그램을 2차원의 모델을 사용하여 구축하였다. 본 논문에서 제시한 모델링은 회전체를 2차원으로 표현함으로써 3차원에 비해 시스템의 표현을 보다 단순화하여 시스템의 구조를 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 하였으며, 회전체를 서로 다른 재질의 다중 레이어로 모델이 가능하게 하였다. 또한 축계에 추가적 강성의 영향을 줄 수 있는 열박음 부분에 대하여, 그 영향 정도를 선택적으로 입력할 수 있게 하여 열박음에 대한 효과를 조정할 수 있도록 하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서 제시하는 2차원 모델을 이용한 동특성 해석 프로그램의 해석 오차를 알아보기 위해 상용 프로그램의 해석 결과와 비교하였으며, 모델링을 위한 시간과 해석 수행 시간 역시 비교하였다.
