Wireline relay stations(RS's) are connected to cellular base stations(BS's) via radio-over-fiber(RoF) to enhance system capacity and to reduce shadow areas. Unlike wireless multi-hop systems, BS-to-RS signaling is transmitted out-of-band, thus reducing the effect of interference caused by frequency reuse. In this paper, antenna arrays used in addition to the wireline RS's are considered to evaluate the transmission capacity gain and performance variations according to the may structures. In particular, RS locations to maximize the gain, may distribution patterns for a given number of antenna elements, performance enhancement for a varying number of elements are experimentally determined to suggest a proper utilization of antenna ways in conjunction with wireline RS's.

With device-to-device (D2D) communications, an inactive user terminal can be utilized as a relay node to support multi-hop communication so that connective experience of the cell-edge user as well as the capacity of the whole system can be significantly improved. In this paper, we investigate the spectrum sharing for a cooperative relay assisted D2D communication underlying a cellular network. We formulate a joint relay selection and channel assignment problem to maximize the throughput of the system while guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS) requirements of cellular users (CUs) and D2D users (DUs). By exploiting coalition formation game theory, we propose two algorithms to solve the problem. The first algorithm is designed based on merge and split rules while the second one is developed based on single user's movement. Both of them are proved to be stable and convergent. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Multi-hop cellular networks (MCNs) reduce the transmit power and improve the system performance. Recently, several research studies have been conducted on MCNs. The mobile relay selection scheme is a rising issue in the design of MCNs that achieves these advantages. The conventional opportunistic relaying (OR) is performed on the single factor for maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). In this paper, a comprehensive OR scheme based on Bi-Target is proposed to improve the system throughput and reduce the relay handover by constraining the amount of required bandwidth and SINR. Moreover, the proposed algorithm captures the variability and the mobility that makes it more suitable for dynamic real scenarios. Numerical and simulation results show the superiority of the proposed algorithm in both enhancing the overall performance and reducing the handover.
In a cellular network, if there are too many data users in a cell, data may suffer long delay, and system's quality-of-service (QoS) will degrade. Some traditional schemes such as dynamic channel-allocation scheme (DCA) will assign more channels to hot (or overloaded) cells through a central control system (CC) and the throughput increase will be upper bounded by the number of new channels assigned to the cell. In mobile-assisted data forwarding (MADF), we add an ad-hoc overlay to the fixed cellular infrastructure and special channels-called forwarding channels- are used to connect mobile units in a hot cell and its surrounding cold cells without going through the hot cell's base station. Thus, mobile units in a hot cell can forward data to other cold cells to achieve load balancing. Most of the forwarding-channel management work in MADF is done by mobile units themselves in order to relieve the load from the CC. The traffic increase in a certain cell will not be upper bounded by the number of forwarding channels. It can be more if the users in hot cell are significantly far away from one another and these users can use the same forwarding channels to forward data to different cold neighboring cells without interference. We find that, in a system using MADF, under a certain delay requirement, the throughput in a certain cell or for the whole net-work can be greatly improved.

Traffic safety and congestion are becoming more and more serious, especially the frequent occurrence of traffic accidents, which have caused great casualties and economic losses. Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) can assist in safe driving and improve traffic efficiency through real-time information sharing and communication between vehicles. All vehicles communicate directly with Base Stations (BS), which will increase the base station load. And when the communicating vehicles are too far apart, too fast or there are obstacles in the communication path, the communication link can be unstable or even interrupted. Therefore, choosing an effective and reliable multi-hop relay-assisted Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication can not only reduce the base station load and improve the system throughput but also expand the base station coverage and improve the communication quality of edge vehicles. Therefore, a communication area division scheme based on regular hexagon segmentation technology is proposed, a relay-assisted V2V communication mechanism is designed for the divided communication areas, and an efficient communication link is constructed by selecting the best relay node. Simulation results show that the scheme can improve the throughput of the system by nearly 55% and enhance the robustness of the V2V communication link.

In this paper, we propose a sub-cell coverage control algorithm for enhancement of the cell throughput in OFDMA based relay systems. Relay station (RS) is exploited for improved quality of the received signal in cellular communication systems, especially in shadow areas. However, since a RS requires additional radio resource consumption for the link between the base station (BS) and the RS, we have to carefully control the coverage areas if a mobile station (MS) is serviced via the BS or the RS considering the cell throughput. We consider radio resource reuse as well for the sub-cell coverage configuration by applying various reuse patterns between RSs. We also consider a time varying system by adaptively changing the threshold for coverage depending on the MSs' traffic in the cell. We initially determine the sub-cell coverage of the system depending on the ratio of received signal-interference-noise-ratio (SINR) of the MS from the BS and RSs, respectively. Then, the "sub-cell coverage threshold" varies based on the "effective transmitted bits per sub-channel" with time. Simulation result shows that the proposed "time varying coverage control algorithm" leads to throughput improvement compared to the fixed sub-cell coverage configuration.
