  • This study examines the multi-functionality of the cultural facilities and explores the architectural characteristics of cultural facilities in city environment. For this purpose, 1 examine the major cultural facilities in USA and Singapore. Recently, the inter-cultural communication methods have been diversified and the cultural facilities need to be designed to effectively accommodate the public's interests in these activities. It is also necessary to reexamine cultural facilities' functions in terms of how the multi-functionality facilities reflect the surrounding environment. This study also sheds a new light on the meaning of the relationships between cultural activity, and the cultural facility design. For this, I primarily look at the various design categories of cultural buildings and their main functions. Finally, I demonstrate how both cultural activity and cultural facility design elements are embodied in the city environment.

The structure of these experiences was identified in a social-cultural context. Methods: Data were collected by means of in-depth interviews using tape-recordings from 16 participants who were providing childbirth care for culturally different women. A phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi was used to guide the process of data analysis. Results: A total of 138 significant statements were extracted from the data resulting in nine themes and five theme clusters. Theme clusters that emerged from the data were: more in-depth cultural difference, difficulty in providing care in multi-cultured, sticking to care in our own way, not being ready to nurse, and accepting culturally different woman, such as a Korean woman. Conclusion: The findings suggest that systematic educational programs for enhancement of cultural competency and its support systems should be developed for Korean nurses. Useful materials on Korean childbirth care should also be provided to women giving birth.

  • The purpose of this study was to deepen our understanding about mothers' parenting stress in multi-cultural families. The study was conducted through in-depth interviews of 6 mothers from Mongolia, Philippines, and Japan who were living in Seoul. The findings of this study were as follows. First, mothers of multi-cultural families had difficulties of giving birth and child rearing, especially in the earliest years of their children. They were not fully adapted to the ways of living in Korea with little social support from family members and neighbors. Second, they were worried about their children's development, particularly language development due to their lack of understanding and fluency in Korean. Third, they were concerned about the cultural and racial discrimination against their children. They expected their children to be treated and respected equally like ordinary Korean children. Fourth, they were anxious about the fact that their children might not acquire the basic academic skills before they enter the elementary schools. Furthermore, they were worried that their children might not get as much educational support as they want. Fifth, despite the burden of mother's role in Korea, they wished to get a job to support their children for better education. In conclusion, the marriage immigrant mothers experienced the stress due to the lack of social support, the discrimination against immigrants, the possibilities of their children's delays in development, the disparity in the level of support for educating their children and the high expectations about their children's education in Korean society. Therefore it is necessary for the policy makers to consider more practical support system for the multi-cultural families in order for the marriage immigrant mothers to build up self-confidence in child rearing and educating their children.

  • In this study, we studied the influence that the stress placed on children (originating from presence of two cultures at multi-cultural families) can have on adapting to school, and further assessed the control effect of teachers' support as a protection factor. In order to achieve the goal of the research, we identified samples of children between Grades 3-6 who came from multi-cultural families to carry out surveys. Based on the results of our analysis, the experience of discrimination and language conflicts experienced by children from multi-cultural families affected their academic activities (among adaptation factors to school experiences), while teachers' support appeared to have a control effect. However, for the influence of language conflicts on friend relationships (among adaptation factors to school experiences), teachers' support did not have a control effect. As such, based on this research result, we've proposed plans to improve school adaptation of children from multicultural families.

  • In recent years, research about Natural User Interface (NUI) has become focused because NUI system can give natural feelings for users in virtual reality. Most important thing in NUI system is how to communicate with the computer system. There are many things to interact with users such as speech, hand gestures, body actions. Among them, hand gesture is suitable for the purpose of NUI because people often use a relatively high frequency in daily life and hand gesture have meaning only by itself. This hand gestures called multi-cultural hand gesture and we proposed the method to recognize this kind of hand gestures. Proposed method is composed of Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) used for hand shape recognition and Histogram of Oriented Displacements (HOD) used for hand center point trajectory recognition.
