  • A typical HTS power transmission cable has multi-layer conductor structure to increase the current capacity. The tapes of the innermost layer are wound on a round former, and adjacent tapes of another layer are separated by a thin insulating film. In steady state, the total current flows in the conductor layer, and consequently there is magnetic field between the inner and outer layer. This paper describes a magnetic field amplitude around the conductor layer and the HTS tape by a transport current. Also, this paper will help for future cable conductor prototypes.

  • In this paper, a spiral shaped common mode filter(CMF) embedded in a flexible printed circuit board(FPCB) is proposed for a multi-function cable. The CMF embedded in a FPC cable presents a new concept as a multi-function cable by the common mode rejection characteristics without a surface mounted device(SMD) CMF. The embedded CMF has a wideband common mode rejection bandwidth and an enhanced differential mode characteristics compared to conventional CMFs that use a magnetic material such as a ferrite of high loss. The proposed CMF of 3 turn inductors has a common mode rejection bandwidth from 0.4 GHz to 3.12 GHz and has 1.95 dB at 3 GHz, 6.97 dB at 8 GHz improvements of a differential mode insertion loss compared to the commercial LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fire Ceramics) CMFs.

  • The object of this study is to find the optimal insulation design conditions of a HTS power cable cryostat. The optimum condition of a cable cryostat is obtained by varying types of MLIs, cable core weights, spacer diameters, winding pitches and MLI layer numbers. As the weight of cable core is increased, conduction heat transfer from surroundings to cable cryostat is increased. But as the spacer pitch is increased from 120 mm to 200 mm, the heat leak of cable cryostat remains almost constant. The optimal number of MLI layers is suggested. Double ply MLI is more effective than triple ply MLI and the insulation effect is best when the number of MLI layers is 36.

  • The superconducting transmission cable is one of interesting part in power application using high temperature superconducting wire. One important parameter in HTS cable design is transport current sharing because it is related with current transmission capacity and loss. In this paper, we calculate self inductances of each layer and mutual inductances between two layers from magnetic field energy, and current sharing of each layer for 4-layer cable using the electric circuit model which contain inductance and resistance (by joint and AC loss). Also, transport current losses which are calculated by monoblock model and Norris equation are compared. As a results, outer layer has always larger transport current than inner layer, and current capacity of each layer is largely influenced by resistance per unit cable length. As a conclusion, for high current uniformity and low AC loss, we have to decrease inductances themselves or those differences.

  • The insulation is a important part of cable. In thisb paper, measured the insulation resistance for analysing of change of insulation resistance by filler on low voltage multicore cables. The insulation resistance is not effected by only insulation material, but also filler material. The insulation resistance is different with measuring before filling and after filling by filler. When develope the new filler or cable, the volume resistance of filler must be considered.

  • This paper provides a variety of viewpoints to illustrate the mechanism of the deck-stay interaction with the appropriate initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges. Based on the smooth and convergent bridge shapes obtained by the initial shape analysis, the one-element cable system (OECS) and multi-element cable system (MECS) models of the Kao Ping Hsi Bridge in Taiwan are developed to verify the applicability of the analytical model and numerical formulation from the field observations in the authors' previous work. For this purpose, the modal analysis of the two finite element models are conducted to calculate the natural frequency and normalized mode shape of the individual modes of the bridge. The modal coupling assessment is also performed to obtain the generalized mass ratios among the structural components for each mode of the bridge. The findings indicate that the coupled modes are attributed to the frequency loci veering and mode localization when the "pure" deck-tower frequency and the "pure" stay cable frequency approach one another, implying that the mode shapes of such coupled modes are simply different from those of the deck-tower system or stay cables alone. The distribution of the generalized mass ratios between the deck-tower system and stay cables are useful indices for quantitatively assessing the degree of coupling for each mode. These results are demonstrated to fully understand the mechanism of the deck-stay interaction with the appropriate initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges.

  • Inerter-based damping devices (IBBDs), which consist of inerter, spring and viscous damper, have been extensively investigated in vehicle suspension systems and demonstrated to be more effective than the traditional control devices with spring and viscous damper only. In the present study, the control performance on cable vibration reduction was studied for four different inerter-based damping devices, namely the parallel-connected viscous mass damper (PVMD), series-connected viscous mass damper (SVMD), tuned inerter dampers (TID) and tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD). Firstly the mechanism of the ball screw inerter is introduced. Then the state-space formulation of the cable-TID system is derived as an example for the cable-IBBDs system. Based on the complex modal analysis, single-mode cable vibration control analysis is conducted for PVMD, SVMD, TID and TVMD, and their optimal parameters and the maximum attainable damping ratios of the cable/damper system are obtained for several specified damper locations and modes in combination by the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. Lastly, optimal design of PVMD is developed for multi-mode vibration control of cable, and the results of damping ratio analysis are validated through the forced vibration analysis in a case study by numerical simulation. The results show that all the four inerter-based damping devices significantly outperform the viscous damper for single-mode vibration control. In the case of multi-mode vibration control, PVMD can provide more damping to the first four modes of cable than the viscous damper does, and their maximum control forces under resonant frequency of harmonic forced vibration are nearly the same. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of PVMD in cable vibration control.

  • In this paper, a strongly coupled method for investigating the interaction between a cable and tow-fish is presented. The nodal position finite element method was utilized to analyze the nonlinear cable dynamics, and 6DOF equations of motion were employed to describe the 3D rigid body motion of the tow-fish. Combining cable and tow-fish systems into a single formulation allowed the two nonlinear systems to be strongly coupled into a unified nonlinear system. This strongly coupled system was numerically integrated in the time domain using a predictor/multi-corrector Newmark algorithm. To demonstrate the validity, efficacy, and applicability of the current approach, two different scenarios (virtual and sea trial) were simulated, and the simulation results were validated using the physical plausibility and the sea trial test.

  • The structure of a high-Tc superconducting power cable system is composed of these parts; (from the outer section) a liquid nitrogen cryostat, a vacuum cryostat, multi-layer high-Tc superconducting cable cores and a stabilizer and both cryostats during the stable operating period of the high-Tc superconducting power cable system are calculated by the numerical method. And the optimal conditions of the stabilizer and both cryostats, that minimize the eddy current losses, are derived from the analyzed results. The optimal results can be applied to the design and manufacture of the high-Tc superconducting power cable system.
