  • It is important to evaluate energy absorption capacity of frames required during a design earthquake. An inelastic computer analysis based on mathematical modelling of energy absorbing frames and elements makes it possible to evaluate required energy absorption capacity. But such an analysis sometimes consumes much computation time particularly in case of complicated structural system. This paper presents a proposal to predict energy absorption of multi-bent steel frames by simple equivalent linear method.

  • The methods for determining the diffusion parameters for the diffusion of d-limonene, a major volatile compound of orange juice, through a multi-layered food packaging material and predicting its absorption into the packaging material have been investigated. The packaging material used was the 1.5-mm thick multi-layered packaging material composed of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and low density polyethylene (LDPE). Orange juice was placed in a cell where volatiles were absorbed in the sample package and kept at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 72 hr. The d-limonene absorbed in a 1.5-mm thick multi-layered food packaging material was analyzed by a solid phase micro-extraction (SPME). The absorption parameters for the absorption of d-limonene in the packaging material were determined and absorption of d-limonene into the packaging material was predicted using absorption storage data. The SPME desorption at $60^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr resulted in the most sensitive and reproducible results. The diffusion coefficients of d-limonene in the packaging material and the partition coefficient at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ were approximately $1-2{\times}10^{12}m^2$/s and 0.03, respectively. The absorption profile no earlier than 30 hr was fit well by a model derived from the Fick's law.

  • In order to design a wave energy generating system, a 6-DOF analysis technique is applied to CFD analysis on of a floating body and the behavior is interpreted according to the nature of the incoming waves. A spring constant is adopted to control the motion of multi floating bodies and to calculate the total average power absorption. Three cases of different wavelengths namely 20D, 30D and 40D have been modeled to analyze the total average power absorption. The average power absorption not only varies with the position of the floating body but also varies with wavelength. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the maximum total average power absorption is 9W approximately in wavelength 30D and the minimum total average power absorption is 4.3W approximately in wavelength 40D.

  • The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.

  • We present a simple and easy-to-implement lumped stiffness model to elucidate the load transfer mechanism among all individual tube shells and intertube van der Waals (vdW) interactions in transversely compressed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Our model essentially enables theoretical predictions to be made of the relevant transverse mechanical behaviors of multi-walled tubes based on the transverse stiffness properties of single-walled tubes. We demonstrate the validity and accuracy of our model and theoretical predictions through a quantitative study of the transverse deformability of double- and triple-walled CNTs by utilizing our recently reported nanomechanical measurement data. Using the lumped stiffness model, we further evaluate the contribution of each individual tube shell and intertube vdW interaction to the strain energy absorption in the whole tube. Our results show that the innermost tube shell absorbs more strain energy than any other individual tube shells and intertube vdW interactions. Nanotubes of smaller number of walls and outer diameters are found to possess higher strain energy absorption capacities on both a per-volume and a per-weight basis. The proposed model and findings on the load transfer and the energy absorption in multi-walled CNTs directly contribute to a better understanding of their structural and mechanical properties and applications, and are also useful to study the transverse mechanical properties of other one-dimensional tubular nanostructures (e.g., boron nitride nanotubes).

  • The property of magnetic field and properties of EMW(Electro Magnetic Wave) absorption with multi-shaped EMW absorber was simulated. As a magnetic field having high density was showed at bottom of EMW absorber, simulation showed that overall EMW was absorbed at the bottom of multi-shaped absorber. The absorption properties of EMW according to thickness of absorber showed that it enhanced about 50-60 percent. Also, EMW absorption properties was checked with surface area of EMW absorber. A cylinder-shaped EMW absorber exhibited good property among multi-shaped EMW absorber based on these result.

  • Recently, development efforts of triple-effect absorption chiller have been increased in order to improve the efficiency of double-effect absorption chiller. However, triple-effect absorption chiller has some disadvantages, including high corrosion characteristic of LiBr solution at high temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Moreover, it is necessary to develop new components for operation under high pressure of 2 bars even though COP is increased to 1.6 or 1.7. The objective of this study was to introduce a new system by combining double effect absorption chiller with single effect absorption chiller with multi-generators using bypass flow of LiBr dilute solution to $3^{rd}$ generator to overcome the disadvantages of triple-effect chiller and improve energy efficiency. Results indicate that the new absorption cycle had a much higher efficiency than double-effect chiller system, showing significant improvement when bypass solution flow rate of 25% was applied to the $3^{rd}$ generator using the main dilute solution of the absorber. The COP of the new chiller system was found to be 1.438, which was 21.7% higher than that (1.18) of the present double-effect system. The COP was decreased when solution by-pass rate to the $3^{rd}$ generator was increased. In addition, lower cooling water temperature caused higher COP. Therefore, the multi-generator system with by-pass solution might be an excellent chiller alternative to triple-effect absorption chiller with higher efficiency.

  • Many research groups have studied tandem or multi-junction cells to overcome this low efficiency and degradation. In multi-junction cells, band-gap engineering of each absorb layer is needed to absorb the light at various wavelengths efficiently. Various absorption layers can be formed using multi-junctions, such as hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H), amorphous silicon germanium (a-SiGe:H) and microcrystalline silicon (${\mu}c$-Si:H), etc. Among them, ${\mu}c$-Si:H is the bottom absorber material because it has a low band-gap and does not exhibit light-induced degradation like amorphous silicon. Nevertheless, ${\mu}c$-Si:H requires a much thicker material (>2 mm) to absorb sufficient light due to its smaller light absorption coefficient, highlighting the need for a high growth rate for productivity. ${\mu}c$-SiGe:H has a much higher absorption coefficient than ${\mu}c$-Si:H at the low energy wavelength, meaning that the thickness of the absorption layer can be decreased to less than half that of ${\mu}c$-Si:H. ${\mu}c$-SiGe:H films were prepared using 40 MHz very high frequency PECVD method at 1 Torr. SiH4 and GeH4 were used as a reactive gas and H2 was used as a dilution gas. In this study, the ${\mu}c$-SiGe:H layer for triple solar cells applications was performed to optimize the film properties.

  • An oil layer fuel absorption /desorption modeling was developed. Multi-component fuel model has showed more reasonable condition than single component model. Henry's constant which is related to solubility is the most important variable in the oil layer absorption/desorption mechanism. The oil segments close to the top of the cylinder liner have more significant contribution to the fuel absorption and desorption process than other oil segments. At the warmed-up condition, the effect of the engine speed on the precent fuel absorbed/desorbed is minimal. But at low il film temperature, percent of fuel abosrbed/desorbed is decreased with increasing the engine speed because of low value of molecular diffusion coefficient of fuel. The amount of fuel trapped in the piston crevice is from 2 to 2.3 times larger than that of fuel in the oil fim. However, fuel form oil film slowly desorbs into the combustion chamber compared with fuel from the piston crevices when the engines is cold.
