Heat Transfer Analysis of Exhaust Gas into the Passenger Car Muffler (승용차 머플러에 유입되는 배기가스의 열전달 해석)

  • This study is analysis on the heat transfer of exhaust gas into the muffler at passenger Car. Numerical analysis with Computational fluid Dynamics(CFD) was carried out to investigate exhaust gas flow. The STAR-CD S/W used for the three dimensional steady state CFD analysis in a muffler. The Navier-Stokes Equation is solved with the SIMPLE method in a general cartesian coordinates system. Result of numerical simulation; Inlet and outlet temperature shown about ${\Delta}T=239K$, 216K, 202K at in the muffler. Heat transfer was progressed quickly by atmospheric temperature of muffler external at in the near wall.

  • Car muffler has the role to form the exhaust gas from high temperature- pressure to lower level and reduce the generated noise. Because of this role, its durability decrease as deformation by heat is occurred. This study is to analyze the flow of exhaust gas inside muffler and its coupled thermal deformation with 3-D modeling and ANSYS. There is the fastest flow at the exit of muffler with the maximum velocity of 54 m/s. And the maximum deformation or equivalent stress is shown at this model respectively as 0.00435 mm or 3414.4 MPa by the influence of heat and pressure at part of intersection with inlet and body of muffler.

  • Two mufflers for a large-size sedan are suggested aiming (1) sporty-sound and (2) quiet-sound as well as both satisfying low back-pressure and low manufacturing cost. Transmission loss prediction considering heat and flow may increase the accuracy and reduce the development cost in muffler design; thus, GT-power prediction considering heat, flow, and acoustics is utilized. By understanding the fundamentals of flow-acoustic theory in small orifice(hole), an effective muffler design concept is proposed. Vehicle tests show the consistence with predictions for sound; also a back-pressure test bench confirms the advantage in pressure drop for both suggested mufflers. Those suggested mufflers also have advantages in manufacturing cost due to simplicity of the design.

  • The effect of the joint condition of automotive muffler shell and baffle on radiated noise from muffler shell Is studied. Shell vibration characteristics, especially shift In natural frequency and change in of response amplitude, was identified from finite element analysis and modal tests for various joint conditions between shell and baffle. When there is heat expansion and inner pressure from the exhaust 9as in the muffler with elliptical cross section, the shell expands out, and construct gap with baffles. This gap causes more degrees of freedom of shell vibration and natural frequency shift. By welding the muffler shell to the baffles or using a dual shell muffler, the radiated noise problem could be mitigated supplying more a rigid joint and damping, respectively.

  • In a compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston and valves cause noise and vibration to be so critical issues that low noise requirement always challenges engineers developing it. A muffler is frequently used for reducing these impulsive noise components, but has adverse effects on compressor's performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerant when it pass through the muffler. In this study, compressible full 3-dimensional CFD simulations are performed to investigate both of flow and acoustic performances of a muffler in use for compressors. On a basis of the analysis results, a parametric study using design factors introduced to improve flow and acoustic performances of the existing muffler is carried out. Finally, improved designs are suggested to confirm the current results.

  • In a reciprocating compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston give rise to serious noise and vibration problems. A muffler is frequently used to reduce this impulsive noise, but also has adverse effects on compressor performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerants through it. Therefore, the flow and acoustic performances of mufflers used in a compressor should be considered simultaneously. In this study, both of flow and acoustic performances of mufflers are investigated using computational fluid dynamic techniques by solving full three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. For validation purpose, the numerical method is initially applied to predict the transmission loss of a simple expansion muffler, and its predicted results show good agreements with theoretical and experimental results. Then, the flow and acoustic performances of an existing muffler is numerically investigated. On the basis of the analysis results, a new muffler is purposed and its performances are compared with the existing one. Improved performances of the new muffler are confirmed.

Thermal Stress Analysis on Exhaust System of Car (자동차 배기시스템의 열응력해석)

  • Exhaust system of car is studied by thermal analysis. Temperature is uniformly distributed from $22{^{\circ}C}$ to $200{^{\circ}C}$ on exhaust system due to heat transfer. The largest deformation of 2.6919mm is shown at the left end of muffler. The inner face combined with exhaust manifold is applied by the largest thermal equivalent stress of 914.61MPa. After the elapsed time of 360 second, the end of muffler is shown to have the largest deformation of 2.5538mm and the bolt combined with this muffler is applied by the largest equivalent stress of 887.79MPa. By reinforcing material at the end of muffler or fastened bolt shown with highest thermal deformation or stress, the durability at this system can be improved.

  • Compressor is a major noise source of air-conditioner. Especially, its low frequency band noise below 1000㎐ is very important because it will not be attenuated by passing through the cover panel and heat exchanger in air-conditioner. The factors affecting the low frequency band noise are studied by geometric similarity along with several experiments, and the low frequency noise is closely related with the discharge holes of muffler as well as the cavity of lower shell. According to develop variable type muffler, dual muffler and active intelligence exhaust system unit. Improvement in engine performance and fuel consumption rate demand information of pressure fraction and heat characteristics. To be able to determine these factor for we experiment on each case of exhaust system unit. In this study, how back pressure is distributed in flow-through in exhaust system and how to design exhaust system flexibleness, efficiency and combustion charateristics influenced by back pressure. This study furnish basic data for engineers, technicians.
