  • As the number of personal computers installed in vehicles increases, a touchpad often used in a labtop computer can be used for the control of an in-vehicle information system (IVIS). Using a touchpad to control the system allows the user to select among large amount of information with a single touch of dragging. For safety and convenience of a driver, the touchpad could be placed on a steering wheel. This research is designed to calculate the most efficient Control-Response Ratio (C/R ratio) for the menu interaction of a touchpad on a steering wheel. Since the menu pointer's rate of movement and proper C/R ratio is determined by the amount of selected information, the amount of displayed information and the movement of a menu pointer was chosen to be independent variables. The dependent variables are a user's preference and task completion time. Two factor full factorial within subject design was used 16 subjects. The investigation revealed that the amount of selected information increased with increasing C/R ratio. The movement of the pointer became slower as the amount of information increased. The best C/R ratio was calculated for each amount of information and preference regression of the user's preference was drawn accordingly. Through this research, the automobile interior designer can benefit from the guidelines suggested for the touchpad control.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to develop a system for the measurement and simulation of the TMJ movement and to analyze the mandibular movement quantitatively. Materials and Methods : We devised patient-specific splints and a registration body for the TMJ movement tracking. The mandibular movements of the 12 subjects with facial deformity and 3 controls were obtained by using an optical tracking system and the patient-specific splints. The mandibular part was manually segmented from the CT volume data of a patient. Three-dimensional surface models of the maxilla and the mandible were constructed using the segmented data. The continuous movement of the mandible with respect to the maxilla could be simulated by applying the recorded positions sequentially. Trajectories of the selected reference points were calculated during simulation and analyzed. Results : The selected points were the most superior point of bilateral condyle, lower incisor point, and pogonion. There were significant differences (P<0.05) between control group and pre-surgical group in the maximum displacement of left superior condyle, lower incisor, and pogonion in vertical direction. Differences in the maximum lengths of the right and the left condyle were 0.59${\pm}$0.30 mm in pre-surgical group and 2.69${\pm}$2.63 mm in control group, which showed a significant difference (P<0.005). The maximum of differences between lengths of the right and the left calculated during one cycle also showed a significant difference between two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion : Significant differences in mandibular movements between the groups implies that facial deformity have an effect on the movement asymmetry of the mandible. • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate potential effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on bimanual force control capabilities in healthy young adults. Method: Eighteen right-handed healthy young adults (10 females and 8 males; age: 23.55 ± 3.56 yrs) participated in this crossover design study. All participants were randomly allocated to both active-tDCS and sham-tDCS conditions, respectively. While receiving 20 min of active- or sham-tDCS interventions, all participants performed bimanual isometric force control tasks at four submaximal targeted force levels (i.e., 5%, 10%, 15, and 20% of maximal voluntary contraction: MVC). To compare bimanual force control capabilities including force accuracy, variability, and regularity between active-tDCS and sham-tDCS conditions, we conducted two-way repeated measures ANOVAs (2 × 4; tDCS condition × Force levels). Results: We found no significant difference in baseline MVC between active-tDCS and sham-tDCS conditions. Moreover, our findings revealed that providing bilateral tDCS including anodal tDCS on left primary motor cortex (M1) and cathodal on right M1 while conducting bimanual force control trials significantly decreased force variability and regularity at 5%MVC. Conclusion: These findings suggest that providing bilateral tDCS on M1 areas may improve bimanual force control capabilities at a relatively low targeted force level.

  • When a construction company builds a high structure, many piles should be driven into the ground by a hammer whose weight is 7,000 Kg in order to make the ground under the structure safe and strong. So, it is essential to determine whether a pile is penetrated into the ground enough to support the weight of the structure since ground characteristics at different locations are different each other. This paper proposes a visual measurement system for pile rebound and penetration movement including vibration using a high-speed line-scan camera and a specially designed mark to recognize two-dimensional motion parameters of the mark using only a line-scan camera. A mark stacking white and black right-angled triangles is used for the measurement, and movement information for vertical distance, horizontal distance and rotational angle is determined simultaneously

  • This paper is concerned with a chronological analysis of the simple limb movement and the performance of a selective response for Korean adults. The cybernetical control number(C.C.No) tester is used to perform the experiment for 103 males and 96 females aged from 20s to above 60s. For the selective response ecperiment, judgement speed has decreased with age. The judgement speed was slowed down more rapidly with age for female than for male. Both the limb movement and the judgement speed showed significantly different trends according to age groups. Especially, it was shown that simple limb movement decreased beginning with 50s for male and 40s for female. It is expected that the results can be applied to the job design of aged people.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ankle-foot orthosis and lumbosacral orthosis on movement patterns used to rise from the supine position to erect stance. Thirty-two healthy adults participated. Subjects were videotaped while rising from a supine position on a floor mat. Each subject performed 10 trials each of three condition;general condition, right ankle-foot orthosis, lumbosacral orthosis. subjects rose most commonly using a symmetrical push pattern of the upper extremities, a symmetrical squat pattern in the lower extremities, a symmetrical in the trunk under each of three conditions. Changes in the incidence of movement patterns occurred in lower extremities of the ankle-foot orthosis and lumbosacral orthosis condition and trunk of the ankle-foot orthosis condition. From a dynamic pattern theory perspective, ankle motion is a control variable for the supine position to erect standing movement.

  • This paper shows that a system with two-link arm can obtain hand reaching movement to a target object projected on a visual sensor by reinforcement learning using a layered neural network. The reinforcement signal, which is an only signal from the environment, is given to the system only when the hand reaches the target object. The neural network computes two joint torques from visual sensory signals, joint angles, and joint angular velocities considering the urn dynamics. It is known that the trajectory of the voluntary movement o( human hand reaching is almost straight, and the hand velocity changes like bell-shape. Although there are some exceptions, the properties of the trajectories obtained by the reinforcement learning are somewhat similar to the experimental result of the human hand reaching movement.

  • The baby makes very great strides in the first year of his life. The developmental principles may be summarised as follows : first, the continuous process from conception to maturity, second, the physical manifestation of neural maturation, third, the cephalocaudal direction, from proximal to distal, fourth generalized mass activity to specific individual responses, fifth, reflex dominance to integration. The stages of normal movement development an head control, rolling creeping(on belly), sitting crawling(on hands and on knees), standing and walking. The knowledge of normal movement development needs for the assessment treatment and management of C.N.S. injuried infant.
