  • This paper presents a new speed and position sensorless control method of permanent magnet synchronous motors based on the sliding mode observer. Since the parameter of the dynamic equation such as machine inertia or viscosity friction coefficient are not well known and these values can be easily changed generally during normal operation, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive sliding mode observer applies adaptive scheme so that observer may overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equation. Furthermore, using the Lyapunov Function, the adaptive sliding mode observer can estimate rotor speed as well as stator resistance. The feasibility of the Proposed observer is verified cia the experiments.

Design of Air Gap for Reducing Torque Ripple in a Single-Phase BLDC Motor (단상 BLDC 전동기의 토오크 리플 저감을 위한 공극 설계)

  • Most single-Phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors have unequal air gap to eliminate the dead-point where the developed torque value is zero. However this partial increase of the air gap deteriorates the motor characteristics in cogging torque. Thus in this paper a new topology of unequal air gap is proposed to solve this problem. The topology is to use some pairs of equal or unequal air gaps. As a result, it is proved by the finite element analysis and experimental results that the single-Phase BLDC motor with the proposed air gap topology is very effective in reducing the cogging torque.

Effects of Segmented Poles on Exciting Forces for BLDC Motors (세그먼트 극을 가진 BLDC 전동기의 가진력에 관한 연구)

  • This paper investigates effects of segmented poles on exciting forces such as cogging torque, BEMF, phase current, torque ripple and local forces. Cogging torque, BEMF and local force are determined by FEM analysis and phase current is calculated using voltage equations after determining BEMF and phase inductance. Effective dead zones at pole separations result in wider than the physical dead zones due to leakage field during magnetization. Due to the existence of dead zones, there exist additional exciting harmonics of the cogging torque which play adverse effect on vibration and noise performance. The magnitude of BEMF is decreased and the waveforms are also distorted depending on dead zone positions. Segmented poles inevitably cause uneven magnetic field distribution at pole separations which introduces additional harmonics of exciting forces which are detrimental to structural to structural resonances. They also decrease motor efficiency by reducing effective phase BEMF.

  • In this study, the stator form-winding sample coils based on silicone resin and polyimide were made for fault prediction and reliability estimation on the C-Class(200$\^{C}$ ) insulation system of traction motors. The complex accelerative degradation was periodically performed during 10 cycles, which was composed of thermal stress, fast rising surge voltage, vibration, water immersion and overvoltage applying. After aging of 10 cycles, the condition diagnosis test such as insulation resistance '||'&'||' polarization index, capacitance '||'&'||' dielectric loss and partial discharge properties were investigated in the temperature range of 20 ∼ 160$\^{C}$. Relationship among condition diagnosis tests was analyzed to find a dominative degradation factor and an insulation state at end-life point.

Software Acceleration/Deceleration Methods for Industrial Robots and CNC Machine Tools (산업용로보트와 CNC 공작기계를 위한 소프트웨어 가감속 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose software algorithms which provide acceleration/deceleration characteristics essential to high dynamic performance at the transient states where industrial robots or CNC machine tools start and stop. Software acceleration/deceleration methods are derived from the mathematical analyses of typical hardware systems controlling acceleration/deceleration. These methods make servo motors, which drive axes of motion, start and stop smoothly without vibration in the repeated tools. The path error, which is one of the most significant factors in the performance evaluation of industrial robots or CNC machine tools, is analyzed for linear, exponential, and parabolic acceleration/deceleration algorithms in case of circular interpolation. The analyses show that path error consists of the distance between the required path and generated one through acceleration/deceleration, and that between the generated one through acceleration/deceleration algorithm and the actual one of the end effector of the industrial robot or tool of the CNC equipment.

  • The camera system we researched has two stepping motors for the pan and tilt operation, and the human face tracking algorithm. Recently, this kind of the camera is used in PC communication, telecommunication vision meeting and tele-lecture. This paper discusses the smooth speed control method of this camera when the face is moved to up, down, left and right direction. We used a mean shift algorithm for the face-tracking, proposed the speed control algorithm using a fuzzy logic and certified this characteristics with the experiment.

A Study on PZT-5A Probe for Nondestructive Inspection (비파괴검사를 위한 PZT-5A 탐촉자에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, piezoelectric transducers were designed and manufactured using PZT-5A which had relatively high electromechanical coefficient, nondestructive testing system was developed which was able to inspect automatically using stepping motors, PC-Lab, and PC-Scope. The optimum design conditions for NDT were presented and verified comparing PZT-5A probes with comercial probes. It was proved by simulation and experiments that Epoxy is a good material as matching and backing layers. The envelope was reduced 60% with matching layer and 76% with matching and backing layer. NDT was successfully carried out for aluminum test pieces. Distance error of PZT-5A probe was 2.8%.

  • Remarkable progress has been performed in power electronics, using high frequency switching based on the improvement of power semi-conductor devices. In the other hands, it gives us serious problems, such as, insulation, increasing of the high frequency leakage current, and electric corrosion of bearing in the loaded motors driven by inverters using high frequency switching. To improve these problems, many researches have made especially on the application of soft switching technologies. From this point of view IEE-Japan had started the research groups on soft-switching technology 1997 and 1999. This paper is a survey based on the discussion in this research group with results of ARCP inverter applied for 210kVA power supply.

  • Fuzzy control has been researched for application of industrial processes which have no accurate mathematical model and could not be controlled by conventional methods because of a lack of quantitative input-output data. Intelligent control approach based on fuzzy logic could directly reflex human thinking and natural language to controller comparing with conventional methods. In this paper, the tested system is constructed for sending a ball to the goal position using wind from two DC motors in the path. This system contains non-linearity and uncertainty because of the characteristic of aerodynamics inside the path. The system used in this experiment could be hardly modeled by mathematic methods and could not be easily controlled by linear control manners. The controller, in this paper could control the system containing non-linearity and uncertainty.

  • An inverse method with regularization has been developed to determine the viscoelastic properties of trabecular bone. A series of stress relaxation experiments were performed under the condition of uniaxial compression stress state. Optimization has been formulated within the framework of nonlinear least-squares and a modified Gauss-Newton method with a zeroth-order regularization technique. The stress relaxation behavior of trabecular bone was analyzed using a standard viscoelastic model. The present study clearly shows that trabecular bone exhibits typical viscoelastic stress relaxation behavior, and the obtained material parameters well represent the viscoelastic behavior of trabecular bone.
