Design and Analysis of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Considering Saturated Rotor Bridge using Equivalent Magnetic Circuit

  • This paper considers the design and performance evaluation of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). The initial design such as the sizing and shape design of the stator and rotor is performed for a given load condition. In particular, the equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) is employed both to design the mechanical parameters of the rotor while considering nonlinear magnetic saturation effect and to analyze the magnetic characteristics of the air-gap of the motor. The designed motor is manufactured and tested to confirm the validity of the design processes and simulated results.

  • Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. Accordingly, the recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of engine efficiency and regressionrate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes and the flame structure in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the flamelet model and Low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$turbulent model is employed to reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect. Numerical results suggest that the present approach is capable of realistically simulating the combustion characteristics of the hybrid rocket engines.

Diagonally-reinforced Lane Detection Scheme for High-performance Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

  • In this paper, several optimizations are proposed to enhance the quality of lane detection algorithms in automotive applications. Considering the diagonal directions of lanes, the proposed limited Hough transform newly introduces image-splitting and angle-limiting schemes that relax the number of possible angles at the line voting process. In addition, unnecessary edges along the horizontal and vertical directions are pre-defined and removed during the edge detection procedures, increasing the detecting accuracy remarkably. Simulation results shows that the proposed lane recognition algorithm achieves an accuracy of more than 90% and a computing speed of 92 frame/sec, which are superior to the results from the previous algorithms.

  • Conventional robots actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as harmonic drive had weakness in delivering loads, pressing, grinding, and cutting jobs. To overcome this, a new type of robot actuated by the ball screw was proposed. The ball screw is actuated by using four bar mechanism. The dynamics model of the robot was set up. The robot has parameter uncertainties and nonlinearlity due to the ball screw actuator. To coordinate the robot, the sliding-mode control was applied.

  • In this paper, we developed an expert system that helped a machine-tool designer to select a moderate servomotor of the feed drive unit of a machine tool. With the specification of the drive unit, it searches for the set of servo-motors that have enough torque and power to satisfy the driving condition which the designer defines from the database. me database also contains knowledge and rules, which describe the design process and calculate design parameters of a feed drive. The knowledge-based design support module shows every steps of inference and reason for the solution that it provides.

Development of Human-Sized Biped Robot (인체형 이족 보행로봇의 개발)

  • We developed a human-sized BWR(biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. The robot overcomes the limit of the driving torque of conventional BWRs. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch joints and one roll joint. In all, a 10 degree-of-freedom robot with two balancing joints was developed. The BWR was developed to walk autonomously such that it is actuated by small torque motors and is boarded with DC battery and controllers. In the performance test, the BWR performed nice motions of sitting-up and sitting-down. Through the test, we could find capability of high performance in biped-walking.

  • In this study, we present a mobile robot for ultrasonic scanning of weldment. magnetic Caterpillar mechanism is selected in order to travel on the inclined surface and vertical wall. A motion control board and motor driver are developed to control four DC-servo motors. A virtual device driver is also developed for the purpose of communicating between the control board and a host PC with Dual 'port ram. To provide the mobile robot with stable and accurate movement, PID control algorithm is applied to the mobile robot control. And a vision system for detecting the weld-line are developed with laser slit beam as a light source. In the experiments, movement of the mobile robot is tested inclined on a surface and a vertical wall.

Application of Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory for vibration analysis of rotating functionally graded nanobeams

  • In the present study, for first time the size dependent vibration behavior of a rotating functionally graded (FG) Timoshenko nanobeam based on Eringen's nonlocal theory is investigated. It is assumed that the physical and mechanical properties of the FG nanobeam are varying along the thickness based on a power law equation. The governing equations are determined using Hamilton's principle and the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to obtain the results for cantilever boundary conditions. The accuracy and validity of the results are shown through several numerical examples. In order to display the influence of size effect on first three natural frequencies due to change of some important nanobeam parameters such as material length scale, angular velocity and gradient index of FG material, several diagrams and tables are presented. The results of this article can be used in designing and optimizing elastic and rotary type nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) like nano-motors and nano-robots including rotating parts.

Degree of Overlapping Design Activities in Vehicle Development:A System Dynamics Approach

  • The vehicle development process (VDP) is iterative in nature with numerous interactions and information flows between design groups and between development phases. The VDP has been changed from a sequential-functional development to a concurrent-team based approach. Concurrent execution of design activities may reduce the development lead-time, but it increases the managerial complexity in the VDP. A system dynamics model was developed to understand the transient behavior of parallel, overlap, and sequential processes in the VDP and to determine the optimal level of overlapping considering the development lead-time and total number of reworks. The simulation results showed that different execution processes should be used, depending upon the intensity of reworks.

Cycle Reduction Simulation for Turning Process (선삭 가공 사이클 단축 시뮬레이션)

  • Productivity of machining using machine tools is affected by cutting conditions such as cutting speed, feedrate and depth. However, undesirable conditions that lengthen the machining cycle and shorten the tool life occur frequently because determination of cutting condition is known to depend on human experience. This paper presents a method of cycle reduction by removing undesirable conditions. For cycle reduction, maximum cutting load is determined using commercial FEM simulation code. The feedrate in the NC program is altered based on a predetermined cutting load value. To make a decision on the proposed effectiveness, a simulation is performed for the brake hub parts of an automobile. From the evaluation, it was found that the cycle reduction was under 15%.
