A study on two dimensions of achievement motivation for job design (직무설계를 위한 성취동기의 이차원성에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzes jow reciprocal relations between the temperament and motivation of managers interact. To know the relationships between achievement motivation and affiliation motivation, this study examines whether or not affiliation-achievement motivation and nonaffiliation-achievement motivation mani- fested in manager group of Jpapn are present in this tested group. Data were obtained by testing 578 male- managers employed in domestic enterprise with Y-G Character and Motivation Test. Structure Vector obtained and applied Canonical Correlation Analysis method is applied as a means to interpret it. From the study, the following results are obtained: First, the affiliation and nonaffiliation-achievement motivation appear in domestic sampled group. Second, the manager with affiliation-achievement motivation is shown to have extroversive character, high-social accommodation, high-emotional stability, whereas the one with nona- ffiliation-achievement motiviation to have introversive character, somewhat low-social accommodation and low- emotional stability. Whether or not these results reappear in the bilingual group remains to be studied further.

The Study on the Relationship between Personal Characteristics of Foreign Students and Motivation of Korea Employment: Focus on TOPIK, Motivation to Study in Korea, and Major Satisfaction (외국인 유학생의 개인 특성이 한국 취업 동기에 미치는 영향 분석: TOPIK과 유학동기, 전공만족도 중심으로)

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of motivation of the employment in Korea with gender, nationality, motivation of studying in Korea, major satisfaction and Korean proficiency level of foreign students who are studying in Korea. The second purpose is to analyze the current factors, to leverage educational management and to make and support some policy of Minister of Education for international students in order to promote utilization of employment of the students in Korea during 4 years of studying. This paper is used by IBM SPSS Statistics 24 Version for data analysis. As a result of the analysis, the average of students in Southeast Asia, Central Asia and South and North America Africa was higher than Japan and China in terms of motivation of employment in Korea. First, the external motivation to study in Korea has affected TOPIK with positive influence. Second, in the relationship between motivation to study in Korea and the majors satisfaction, the higher the internal motivation of study, the higher the majors' satisfaction level. Third, in the relationship between motivation to study in Korea and motivation of the employment in Korea, internal motivation to study has a positive effect on motivation of the employment. As internal motivation increases, grade of the motivation of the employment increases. Fourth, the relationship between major satisfaction and employment showed positive (+) effect. In other words, the higher the major satisfaction, the higher the motivation of the employment. Fifth, TOPIK has a negative effect on motivation of the employment. It means that external motivation was the main factor that positively influenced TOPIK and internal motivation was also main factors that positively influenced both major satisfaction and motivation of the employment in Korea. Sixth, when the internal motivation has an effect on motivation of Korea employment, the higher the major satisfaction as the parameter, the higher the motivation of Korea employment. Therefore, it will be helpful to understand the meaning of studying motivation and major satisfaction of international students, and to be used as basic data on education policies of universities and governments supporting the career and employment for international students.

The Effect of Intrinsic Motivation on Individuals' Performance and the Mediating Role of Job Stress in the Republic of Korea Army

  • This study examines the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance in the Republic of Korea armed forces and explores whether job stress mediates the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance. The research questions are: (1) Does intrinsic motivation influence individual performance in military organizations? (2) Does job stress impact individual performance? and (3) Does job stress mediate the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individual performance? The study utilizes data collected from a 350 soldiers survey in the Special Forces Brigade and Special Assault Commando Regiment of the Republic of Korea's Army. We use structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the mediation role among intrinsic motivation, job stress, and individuals' performance. Research findings suggest that intrinsic motivation negatively impacts job stress. We also find that job stress has a positive effect on firearm skills. Moreover, the study reveals that the relationship between intrinsic motivation and firearm skills is partially mediated by job stress.

An Exploratory Study of Middle School Students' Motivation in Science: Comparing a STEM Education Program in Korea and the USA

  • This exploratory study is aimed at exploring the validity of the Science Motivation Questionnaire (SMQ) developed for university students, to measure the science motivation of middle school students and analyze the differences on gender and country factors of SMQ. A total of 371 students participated in this study: 171 middle school students from the USA and 200 secondary students from Korea. All participants were enrolled in the STEM program and activities in Utah, USA (for US students) and at a Korean university institute for gifted and talented students (for Korean students). In this study, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and latent mean analysis were used to analyze the gender and country differences. The results indicated that the 25 items of SMQ scale were theoretically meaningful and valid for middle school students. The latent mean difference by gender indicated that male students have higher intrinsic motivation, career motivation, grade motivation, and self-determination than female students. Moreover, a significant difference exists in these factors between the two countries. Further findings reveal that Korean students scored higher than US students in terms of the aforementioned factors. This study will provide significant insights in and contribution to science motivation issues in STEM education and the development of design-based engineering programs.

Which Motivations Influence Consumer Behavior? : Focusing on Second-hand Distribution Platforms

  • Purpose: The no-contact and economic downturn caused by COVID-19 have further grown the used market. The second-hand trading industry has established itself as a popular consumption culture, leading to exponential growth in the size of the market. This study aims to identify the types of shopping motivation for used products targeting Korean consumers, and to examine the relationship between shopping motivations for second-hand transactions, consumption values, and re-use intentions. Research design, data and methodology: The first study was conducted on 63 used trading platform users and the second study was conducted on 441 used trading platform users to identify the types of consumers' motivation for shopping for used products. Results: As a result of the first study, the shopping motivation types of Korean used product consumers were classified into convenience motivation, economic motivation, hedonistic motivation, information Acquisition motivation, and free time utilization motivation. As a result of the second study, it was found that convenience motivation had the greatest influence on functional values and hedonic motivation had the greatest influence on emotional values, and that functional values had a great influence on platform reuse intentions. Conclusions: This study provides practical implications for the establishment of marketing strategies for used trading platforms and academic implications for research related to used trading.

Relations Among Motivation to Lead, Leadership Behavior, and Performance (리더십 발휘동기, 리더십 행위 그리고 성과간의 관계에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • The current study is an attempt, in two separate surveys, to explore the role of motivation to lead, which has rarely been introduced into academic leadership research in Korea. For the survey and statistical analysis, the population is defined as the employees working in Korea. The motivation to lead is considered important in practices since without it any leadership development interventions show less possibility to succeed. The motivation to lead was defined in terms of three dimensions as in affective motivation, socio-normative motivation, and non-calculative motivation(Chen & Drasgow, 2001). The study then empirically explored the potential relationships between the three dimensions and leadership styles. Specifically, such leadership styles as transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and self-sacrificial leadership behavior have been correlated to motivation to lead. In addition, using regression analysis, the explanatory power of the motivation to lead on various dependent variables were investigated. As a result, the three dimensions of motivation to lead, that is, affective, socio-normative, and non-calculative motivations each were found to have strong correlations with transformational, transactional, and self-sacrificial leadership, as well as with other criterion-related variables such as organizational commitment and trust. Limitations of the current study, along with future research directions were also discussed.

The usage motivation of closed type SNS (폐쇄형 SNS의 이용 동기에 관한 연구)

  • A new communication revolution such as social networking service (SNS) has been transforming the way of interaction between people in both of individual level and organizational level. Recently many people have switched to closed type SNS such as Naver Band and Kakao group due to the several reasons. The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage motivation and satisfaction of closed type SNS based on use and gratifications perspectives. Based on prior studies on use and gratifications of Internet-related media and SNS, information motivation, relationship motivation, pleasure/entertainment motivation, self-expression motivation, work motivation were identified as usage motivation of closed type SNS. According to the results, relationship motivation and work motivation were found to be significantly related to the satisfaction. But other motivation factors(information motivation, pleasure/entertainment motivation, self-expression motivation) are not significantly related to the satisfaction. Then satisfaction was found to be significantly related to the intention to use. This study contributes to give companies providing closed type SNS and using it as a marketing tool with the base of activation strategies and practical implications.

A Case Study on the Changes in Pre-Service Teachers' Motivations toward Their Studies in Environmental Education Department (환경교육과 학생의 전공에 대한 동기 변화 사례 연구)

  • This study aims to examine the reasons of changes in motivation of pre-service teachers who major in environmental education. Qualitative case study methods were adopted to collect and analyze data from six(6) pre-service teachers in environmental education department. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with them on the levels of motivation toward their studios. The study results are as follows. The levels of motivation toward their studies were shown differently by each of the pre-service teachers. Some of the pre-service teachers reported that their levels of motivation toward environmental education had changed since the college entrance. The reasons for the changes include 'suitability of environmental education to personal propensity,' 'college courses they took', and 'personal experiences.' Some of the pre-service teachers reported that the levels of motivation for their majors did not changed since he or she was pursuing other goals rather than being an environmental educator.

  • This study explores the direct relationship between challenge and hindrance demands affecting autonomous extrinsic motivation and sales performance. In addition, we examine the mediating role of autonomous extrinsic motivation in the relationship between challenge demands, hindrance demands, and sales performance. This study explores the direct relationship between challenge and hindrance demands affecting autonomous extrinsic motivation and sales performance. In addition, we examine the mediating role of autonomous extrinsic motivation in the relationship between challenge demands, hindrance demands, and sales performance. This study proceeded in two phases comprising preliminary and prime research. First, preliminary quantitative research was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 125 observations to analyze the reliability of the scale and exploratory factor analysis to evaluate the measurements. The data collected from 431 real estate market employees shows that both challenge and hindrance demands positively and negatively affect sales performance through autonomous extrinsic motivation. Furthermore, challenge demands and hindrance demands affect positive and negative sales performance through autonomous extrinsic motivation, respectively. This study suggests that business organizations should design job demands to ensure that challenging work is suitable for employees' job positions. Thus, they will contribute to motivation and help employees achieve job performance.
