  • New features of motion compensation, such as variable block size and multiple reference frames are introduced in H.264/AVC. However, these new features induce significant implementation complexity increases. In this paper, an efficient architecture for spiral-type motion estimation is proposed. First, we propose a hardware-friendly spiral search order. Then, an efficient processing element (PE) architecture for ME is proposed to achieve the proposed search order. The improved PE enables one-pixel-move of the reference pixel data to top, bottom, right, and left by four ports for input and output. Moreover, the parallel calculation architecture to calculate all block size with the SAD of 4x4 is introduced in the proposed architecture. As the result of hardware implementation, the hardware cost is about 145k gates. Maximum clock frequency is 134 MHz in the case of FPGA (Xilinx Vertex5) implementation.

  • Mobile communication devices such as PDAs, cellular phones, etc., need to perform several kinds of computation-intensive functions including H.264 encoding/decoding and 3D graphics processing. In this paper, new reconfigurable architecture is described, which can perform either motion estimation for H.264 or rendering for 3D graphics. The proposed motion estimation techniques use new efficient SAD computation ordering, DAU, and FDVS algorithms. The new approach can reduce the computation by 70% on the average than that of JM 8.2, without affecting the quality. In 3D rendering, midline traversal algorithm is used for parallel processing to increase throughput. Memories are partitioned into 8 blocks so that 2.4Mbits (47%) of memory is shared and selective power shutdown is possible during motion estimation and 3D graphics rendering. Processing elements are also shared to further reduce the chip area by 7%.

  • In this paper an algorithm of image alignments for constructing seamless mosaics is proposed. After the global alignment has been run, there may still be localized mis-registrations present in the mosaic. Due to mis-registrations, there may be seams in the mosaic, such as breaking, blurring, and doubling of lines. To solve this problem, we need an algorithm of residual motion estimation, which minimizes mis-registrations. In the conventional algorithms of residual motion estimation, computational powers are too heavy and estimators of camera parameters are additionally needed such as focal lengths. In the proposed algorithm, residual motion vectors are estimated with the adequate size of estimation and measurement windows and with adjustment of initial vectors according to the established priority. By construction of mosaics with the proposed algorithm, we demonstrate the removal of seams by mis-registrations.

  • In this paper, SA (shape adaptive)-DCT is implemented using a datapath with 4 MACs (multiplication & accumulator). DCT is a well-known bottleneck of real-time video compression using MPEG-like schemes. High-speed pipelined MACs presented here implement real-time DCT. A datapath in this paper executes DCT/IDCT algorithms for QCIF 15fps(frame per second), maximum rate of VLBV(very low bitrte video) in MPEG-4. A 32bit accumulator in a MAC prevents distortion caused by fixed-point process. It can be applied to various operations such as ME (motion estimation) and MC(motion compensation) with a absolutor and a halfer.

  • Recently, well-known SAR imaging algorithms have been developed to form the focused SAR images for stationary targets. In general, the conventional methods exploit the range variation only defined by the motion of radar platform and SAR geometry. However, for SAR imaging of ground moving targets, the motion of the targets induces an additional range shift, yielding the blurred SAR images. To overcome the problem, in this paper we propose an effective motion compensation algorithm operated under a multi-channel SAR, named along-track interferometry(ATI) and phase unwrapping to directly estimate the motion parameters of the targets. In simulations, 50 Monte-Carlo simulation results show the effectiveness of the algorithm in the presence of noise.

  • Change detection using difference picture has been used to detect the location of moving targets and to track them. This method needs the assumption of static camera, and the global motion compensation is required in case of a moving camera. This paper suggests a method for finding a minimum bounding rectangles(MBR) of moving targets in the image sequences using moving region detection, especially with a moving camera. If the global motion parameter is inaccurately estimated, the estimated locations of targets will be accurate either To alleviate this problem, we introduce the concept of the confidence measure and achieve more accurate estimation of global motion. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully removes background region and extracts MBRs of the targets. Even with a moving camera, the new global motion estimation algorithm performs more precise]y and it reduces the background compensation errors of change detection.

  • Video compression is essential technique for fast and efficient transmission of a large amount of video data maintaining high quality. Also, motion estimation and motion compensation is most important technique for efficient video compression. A proposed method is improved diamond search method which uses split diamond pattern and rotated diamond pattern. In particular, the proposed method shows superb result when it is used for the sequence with a direction of camera moving. Moreover when it is used for the sequence with little motion, complexity is reduced considerably by using fewer search points. Also, by varying the number of initial search points, the propose method can provide several options in terms of duality or speed. Simulation results shows that the proposed method sustains better visual quality compared with diamond search method and HEXBS even by using fewer search points. Besides, compared with existing methods, it is able to conduct a motion estimation more efficiently by changing the number of search points adaptively according to motion of video data.

  • In this paper, an interframe coding method for volumetric medical images is proposed. By treating interslice variations as the motion of bones or tissues, we use the motion compensation (MC) technique to predict the current frame from the previous frame. Instead of a block matching algorithm (BMA), which is the most common motion estimation (ME) algorithm in video coding, image warping with biolinear transformation has been suggested to predict complex interslice object variation in medical images. When an object disappears between slices, however, warping prediction has poor performance. In order to overcome this drawback, an overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) technique is combined with carping prediction. Motion compensated residual images are then encoded by using an embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coder with small modification for consistent quality of reconstructed images. The experimental results show that the interframe coding suing warping prediction provides better performance compared with interframe coding, and the OBMC scheme gives some additional improvement over the warping-only MC method.

  • Motion interpolation is adopted and has been spread widely into market since it is effective in reducing motion blur, which is considered as weak characteristic due to slow response time of liquid crystal and hold-type display. 120Hz driving using interpolated frames achieves better moving picture quality with less motion blur and less motion judder. However, errors in the interpolated frames can cause visual artifacts such as static text breakup, halos, and occlusions. This paper focuses on categorizing characteristics of visual artifacts and on reducing side-effects by using information from original frames in special cases.
