5-8세 아동 부모의 스트레스와 대응 (Stress and Coping in Parents of Early School Aged Children)

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing aimed at reducing stress and improving the coping abilities of parents with kindergarten or early primary school aged children. Data were collected through self- reported questionnaires over a period of one month between November 1994 and December 199t in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consisted of 198 parents (99 mothers and 99 fathers) of children attending 1 elementary school and 2 kindergartens. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively, while the Coping scale was used to measure the level of coping. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using paired't-test and oneway ANOVA. The results were as follows : 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. In contrast, fathers revealed significantly greater scores in coping than mothers. 2. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life and support from spouse. Occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and support from spouse influenced parental role stress experienced by fathers. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. 3. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, family type, and number of children, while parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life, satis-faction with spouse and family type. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. The above findings indicate that the mothers did not develop more coping strategies than the fathers, despite their experience of greater stress than the fathers. Hence, nursing intervention for managing stress and improving coping abilities should be provided for mothers. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouse.

만 2세 영아의 상징놀이 수준과 어머니의 반응성 및 언어유형 간의 관계 (The Relationship among Toddler's Symbolic Play Level, Mother's Responsiveness and Verbal Interaction)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among toddler's symbolic play level, mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction. The subjects were 56 pairs of 24-29 months old toddlers and their mothers. The toddler's symbolic play level was classified using categories by Gowen(1995). The mother's verbal interaction was coded during a 10-minute-free play session with her toddler using Caldera, Huston, and O'Brien's(1989) categories. PICCOLO(The Parenting Interactions with Child Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes) by Roggman, Cook, Innocenti, Jump, Norman, & Christiansen(2009) was used to investigate the mother's responsiveness. While the mothers played with their toddlers during a 10-minute-free play session, their interaction were videotaped. The data were analyzed by means, t-test, and correlations. The results of the study were as follows: First, the mean levels of the toddler's symbolic play were in level 3, 'the pretending others'. Also girls spent more symbolic play time with mothers than boys. Second, mothers' responsiveness was generally high in free play with their toddlers. Mothers frequently used 'questions' 'comments' and 'fantasy statements'. Mothers with girls used more 'questions' than mothers with boys. Third, there was a significant relationship among toddler's symbolic play level, mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction. Maternal responsiveness and 'fantasy statements' were positively related with the mean level, and the frequency of play. The 'questions' and 'answers' were also related with symbolic play level and frequency. But 'praise' was negatively related with symbolic play frequency. In conclusion, this study suggested that toddler's symbolic play level was related with mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction during free play.

Mothers' experience of caring for home-quarantined children after close contact with COVID-19 in Korea: an exploratory qualitative study

  • Purpose: The world saw a shift into a new society consequent to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which made home quarantine mandatory for a person in close contact with those who tested positive. For children, however, home quarantine was not limited only to themselves but parents, especially mothers were involved and required to quarantine. This qualitative study aims to explore and understand mothers' experience and their related psychosocial issues while caring for their school-aged children in Korea, who had to home quarantine after coming in close contact with COVID-19 positive individuals. Methods: Data were collected from October 2020 to January 2021 via in-depth, semi-structured interviews with nine mothers of children who had to home quarantine. Interviews were conducted face-to-face in an independent space near the participant's home or workplace (n=5) or via online platforms or telephone (n=4). The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through several iterative team meetings. Results: Thematic analysis revealed the following four themes: "Unable to be relieved due to uncertain situations surrounding me," "Blame and hurt toward me, others, and one another," "Pulling myself together for my children in my broken daily life," and "Changes in the meaning of life amid COVID-19." Conclusion: The narratives show that mothers experienced psychosocial difficulties while caring for their children during home quarantine. It is necessary to reduce the social stigma toward individuals in home quarantine and establish policies to ensure work-family compatibility for such mothers.

COVID-19 펜데믹 상황에서 영유아를 둔 어머니의 코비드감염 불안, 분리개별화 문제가 양육스타일에 미치는 영향요인 (Factors Influencing Parenting Style by Infection Anxiety and Separation Individiaulization Problems in Mothers with Infants and Toddlers in the COVID-19 Pandemic Situation)

  • 본 연구는 COVID-19 펜데믹 상황에서 영유아를 둔 어머니들을 대상으로 코비드 감염불안, 분리개별화가 어머니의 양육스타일에 미치는 영향요인에 대해 알아보고 어머니들의 양육에 도움이 되기 위한 자료를 제공하고자 실시한 조사연구이다. 양육스타일인 온정적 양육과 통제적 양육에 영향을 미치는 요인을 알아보기 위해 회귀계수의 유의성을 검증한 결과, 분리개별화가 온정적 양육에 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 검증되었다(β=-.40, p<.001). 그리고 코비드감염 불안은 통제적 양육에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치고(β=.21, p=.002), 분리개별화는 통제적 양육에 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 검증되었다(β=-.26, p<.001). 즉 분리개별화 문제가 있으면 온정적 양육은 낮고, 코비드감염 불안이 높을수록 통제적 양육은 높으며, 분리개별화 문제가 있으면 통제적 양육도 낮은 것으로 판단할 수 있다. 이러한 연구결과는 COVID-19 펜데믹 상황과 같은 위기에서 영유아를 양육하는 어머니의 역할이 매우 중요하고, 어머니가 주체가 되어 자녀를 지도하고 양육하는 것이 아동의 올바른 성장에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 것이라 사료된다.

  • This paper describes the results from a prevention program for low-income mothers of children under the age of 13 aiming at the positive change on parental attitudes toward their children, parenting satisfaction and attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment. The program duration was 8 weeks and consisted of two parts: parent education on understanding parent-child relationship, communication skill improvement, techniques of problem solving, non-punitive child rearing techniques; and the recognition and use of existing social support network including networking of the neighborhood resources. The pre-post test control group design was employed. The results are: the program is effective on bringing some positive changes on an three variables: parental attitudes toward their children, parenting satisfaction and attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment. Increased social support was found to have significant positive effect on the above variables except the attitudes toward corporal punishment. To decrease the risk factors as well as to increase the protective factors of child abuse, well designed parent education and social support program is recommended on every community level.

  • This study investigates working parent stress. This study surveyed 240 working mothers who are raising toddlers and 106 teachers in Seoul, Cyeong-gi, and Incheon. For this study, the Parenting Stress scale developed by Kim & Kang (1997) was used as the instruments for measurement and parental stress. To measure maternal separation anxiety, this study used the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale (MSAS) developed by Hock (1989), while the Attitude for Occupation scale developed by Farel (1980) was used to measure the attitude for occupation. In addition, the Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire (PAQ) developed by Jewsuwan, Luster and Kostelink (1992), and modified by Oh Chong Eun (2001) were used as the instruments for measurement and adjustment. Data analysis was done using the SPSS WIN 15.0 version and the collected data were subject to a descriptive statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA t-test, and multiple regression analysis. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were maternal attitude for occupation, adjustment of children, maternal anxiety, and income.

아동의 신체화 증상 경험과 관련 부모 및 아동 변인 (Children's Somatic Symptoms and Related Parent and Child Variables)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of children's somatic symptoms and the relationships among parent and child variables such as parenting attitude, children's anxiety, emotional expressiveness and somatic symptoms. The subjects were 523 6th grade students in four elementary schools located in Seoul, Busan and Daejeon. All subjects were tested with the Korean version of Children's Somatization Inventory (K-CSI), Parental Rearing Attitude Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety for Children (STAIC), and The Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by the frequency and percentage of somatic symptoms the children had experienced during the last 2 weeks; Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were used for the selected data of 10 somatic symptoms which were experienced by over 10% of the children. The results are summarized as follows: First, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and memory failure, in that order, were experienced in over 20% of the children. Second, children's somatic symptoms had significant relations with mothers' and fathers' loving-denial attitudes and their anxiety and emotional expressiveness. Third, children's somatic symptoms were influenced by their anxiety and emotional expressiveness, but not by parenting attitude.

건강가정지원 서비스에서 가족-중심 개입 프로그램의 개발 및 실시: 통합 장애아 가족의 능력강화를 위한 생태학적 접근 (Implementing Family-Based Intervention Program at Healthy Family-Support Center: An Ecological Approach for Empowerment of Families with Mildly Handicapped Children)

  • The purpose of the study was to develop family-based intervention program to be implemented and disseminated via "Healthy Family-Support Center." This preventive-empowerment program was designed to intervene with parenting mildly handicapped children enrolled at integrated kindergarten. The theoretical backgrounds employed were ecological theory, preventive family-based intervention approach, and theraplay theory. The pretest-posttest control-group design with random assignment was applied. The research model yielded a significant intervention effect(t=-1.294, p<0.05) on mothers' parenting stress. With proven effectiveness of family-based intervention program, the study further discussed why an ecological, family-based intervention model was a relevant alternative to investigate issues in family welfare, and why an individualized family service plan was a relevant tool to deliver services-in-context for the families who needed supports from exo-and macrosystems.

아동발달 및 양육 지원서비스의 가족친화적 특성과 다양성이 이용만족도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Family Friendliness and Diversity of Support Services for Child Development and Parenting on Parental Satisfaction with Services)

  • The present study aimed to examine the influences of four aspects of family friendliness (i. e., safety, accessibility, convenience, and amenity) and diversity of services designed to support children's development and parenting on parental satisfaction with services. The participants of this study comprised 259 parents (214 mothers and 45 fathers) who had at least one child aged 0 to 11 and lived in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do, or Gyeongsang-do Provinces. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses. Our results indicated that the effects of family friendliness and diversity of services on parental service satisfaction differed by children's developmental level. For parents of elementary school-aged children, the safer the services and the more services they used, the more they were likely to be satisfied with the services provided. In contrast, the safety and the amenity of services had positive influences on parental satisfaction with support services for parents with toddlers while the safety had a significant effect for those who had preschoolers.

The Effects of a Maternal Self-Efficacy Promotion Program on Maternal Confidence and Mother-Infant Interaction

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a maternal self-efficacy promotion program for Korean primiparas on maternal confidence and mother-infant interaction. Method: This study was non-equivalent quasi-experimental research with a control group selected by purposive sampling. Based on Bandura’s (1986) self-efficacy theory, the research team developed the maternal self-efficacy promotion program. The program included achievement experiences, verbal persuasion, and vicarious experiences. The program was provided through face-to-face teaching at the time of discharge, counseling sessions over the telephone, and a home visit. Subjects also learned about parenting skills using a videotape developed by the research team. Sixteen primiparas were recruited to the experimental group at one hospital in Kyongi province, and fifteen primiparas who were matched according to socioeconomic status were recruited to the control group at a postpartum care center in the same province. Results: Subjects in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher maternal confidence and mother-infant interaction than those in the control group. Conclusion: The maternal self-efficacy promotion program appears to be an effective nursing intervention for parenting of first-time mothers in Korea.
