Breeding of High Yielding and Easily Rootable Mulberry Cultivar ′Milsungppong′(Morus bombycis KOIDZ) (다수성이고 발근력이 강한 뽕품종 ′밀성뽕′육성)

  • New Mulberry Cultivar, Milsungppong, was selected from F1 seedlings obtained by crossing the female, 4X Keomseolppong, and the male, Kaeryangppong. Local adaptability test has been carried out at five places(Suwon, Chunchun, Cheongju, Kongju and Sangju) for four years since 1992. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons(spring and autumn) at Suwon in 1995. From these tests, Milsungppong was found to be superior to control cultivar, cultivar, Kaeryangppong, in productivity, rootability and shoot cold injury. The new cultivar, Milsungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangppong, the most prevailing cultivar, Milsungppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangppong, the most prevailing cultivar in Korea It is triploid cultivar belonging to Morus bombycis KOIDZ with the leaf shape of five lobes, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding of 25% compared to Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.) and the medium degree of cold resistance. It is adaptable to every where in Korea except the area cold injury broken out habitually. Milsungppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.

First Report of Leaf Spot Disease Caused by Cladosporium pseudocladosporioides on Morus alba in South Korea

  • Morus alba, known as White Mulberry, is one of the most common species of mulberry found in South Korea, along with M. australis, known as Korean Mulberry. During a routine survey to investigate fungal diseases on deciduous broad-leaved trees in 2020, leaf spots were consistently observed on the White Mulberry in Sejong-si (36°30'12.8"N 127°17'34.5"E) and Wonju-si (37°15'29.6"N 128°11'37.9"E), South Korea, with a disease incidence of approximately 70 to 80%. Symptoms included circular, tan or necrotic lesions surrounded by a dark margin on leaves, which, in some cases, the lesions coalesced to form relatively large necrotic regions. The pathogen was successfully isolated from M. alba, and was identified as Cladosporium pseudocladosporioides based on the phylogenetic analysis and morphology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot disease on M. alba caused by C. pseudocladosporioides in South Korea.

On the relation between the yield for unit length of mulberry branch and several factors (각종조건과 상수의 단위조장당엽량과의 관계)

  • Various relationships with the leaf yield per 1,000m in the length of mulberry branch were investigated. The results obtained are as followings. 1. Relationship with the mulberry varieties. There were little differences of the leaf yield among the mulberry varieties, being 106∼109kg in an average and the distributions of the leaf yield were of 60∼160kg class for Morus bombycis Koidz, 50-17kg class for Morus Lhou(Ser.) Koidz and 50∼180kg class for Morus alba L. Otherwise, 79 per cent of all varieties was between 80∼140kg class to which 85 per cent of only Morus Lhou(Ser.) Koidz belonged. There was one or two peaks for each strains, for example, the peak at 80∼90kg class and at 120∼140kg class in Morus bombycis Koidz showed the best yield, the peak at 90∼100kg class in Morus alba L. and 100∼110kg class in Morus Lhou(Ser.) Koidz. 2. Relationship with the pruning. The multi-stemed pruning showed 149kg mulberry leaf yield which was more 75 per cent increase than the low-stemed pruning, 85kg. 3. Relationship with the degree of cutting off. The leaf yield varied according to the degree of cutting off the branch, such as, 166kg in 1/3 cutting off the branch and 180kg in $\frac{1}{2}$ which were more 19 per cent and 34 per cent increase of 140kg in non-cutting off the branch, respectively. The main cause of the leaf increase was thought because of the increase of young branch. 4. Relationship with the branch diameter. In the relation to the leaf yield per 1,000m in branch length, there was no significance comparing 66kg for thin branch with 80kg for medium one ana the thick branch had 150kg leaf yield and increased 88 per cent when compared with the medium one. In the relation to the leaf yield per l0cm in diameter, 811g leaves for thin branch and 875g for medium one were produced, but there was no significance between them. Thick branch had 1,461g, and increased 67 per cent when compared with medium one and the average yield was 1,201g for total branch.

  • In our country there are five species of Morus genus including Morus alba L.. Also their varieties and hybrids are distributed so much. In sucession of previous report we collected control and marketing specimens of Mori Cortex Radicis, comparative experiments were pharmacognostically carried out to identify the control specimen by the differences of external and internal morphology. It was difficult to identify marketing specimens by external morphology, because they are similar in spite of conparating with control specimen which the origin is definite. In internal morphology, medullary ray is developed near the cambium to primary bark in control specimen A(Morus alba series) and C(M. Lhou series), but less developed in B(M. bombycis series). The difference of these three series was observed. The thickness of cork layer is almost the same($7{\sim}12$ layers) in A and C series, but B is thin layer and sample E(that on the market) is generally more thick and has a stick cork cell. The kinds of starch, Ca-oxalate and latex, cell centents were same, but it was easy to identify them by the differences of their distribution. The bast fibre of D(wild specimen) and E were light lignified, latex tube of A and C series was richer distributed than others. These results show that the origin of Mori Cortex Radicis on the market can be appreciated in four groups of Korean Morus genus which are M. alba, M. bambycis, M. Lhou series and the others.

Root Bark of Morus alba L. and Its Bioactive Ingredient, Ursolic Acid, Suppress the Proliferation of Multiple Myeloma Cells by Inhibiting Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway

  • The root bark of Morus alba L. has cytotoxic activity against several types of cancer cells. However, little is known about its chemopreventive mechanisms and bioactive metabolites. In this study, we showed that M. alba L. root bark extracts (MRBE) suppressed β-catenin response transcription (CRT), which is aberrantly activated in various cancers, by promoting the degradation of β-catenin. In addition, MRBE repressed the expression of the β-catenin/T-cell factor (TCF)-dependent genes, c-myc and cyclin D1, thus inhibiting the proliferation of RPMI-8226 multiple myeloma (MM) cells. MRBE induced apoptosis in MM cells, as evidenced by the increase in the population of annexin VFITC-positive cells and caspase-3/7 activity. We identified ursolic acid in MRBE through LC/mass spectrum (MS) and observed that it also decreased intracellular β-catenin, c-myc, and cyclin D1 levels. Furthermore, it suppressed the proliferation of RPMI-8226 cells by stimulating cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. These findings suggest that MRBE and its active ingredient, ursolic acid, exert antiproliferative activity by promoting the degradation of β-catenin and may have significant chemopreventive potential against MM.

Detection of Suitable Sites for Effective Cultivation of Morus alba L. (뽕나무의 효과적 재배를 위한 적지 탐색)

  • This study was conducted to scientifically analyze on the trends of cultivation area and production, and to detect the suitable site for Morus alba cultivation in forest of Buan-gun for effective cultivation. During last 3 years, the cultivation area of M. alba has steadily been increased, and the mulberry production of Jeollabuk-do has been researched as the greatest in Korea. Especially Buan-gun has the largest cultivation area of M. alba. On the other hand, as the result of detecting the suitable site for M. alba cultivation by factors of altitude, aspect, slope, soil texture, and organism content using GIS, there was the 663 ha suitable site of the total of 16,608 ha. In this area, Byeonsan-myeon, Sangseo-myeon, and Jinseo-myeon were included with the largest area, therefore, it was considered that these were the favorable regions for the expansion of M. alba cultivation area. The result of this study would be expected to be used as the effective information when establishing the expansion plan for M. alba cultivation area focused on the forest of Buan-gun in the future.

Cytotoxic Activity of Bombyx mori and Morus alba Derived Materials against Human Tumor Cell Lines (누에 및 뽕나무 유래 물질의 인간(人間) 암세포주(癌細胞株)에 대한 세포독성(細胞毒性))

  • The cytotoxic activity of MeOH extracts of the freeze-dried silkworm (Bombyx mori)-derived materials (4th instar larvae, female and mate pupae, virgin female and male adult), dried Beauveria bassiana-infected silkworm larvae, dried feces from the 4th instar larvae B. mori, and dried mulberry (Morus alba)-derived materials (leaves, fruits, root barks) in vitro was evaluated by sulforhodamine B assay, using the five human solid A 549 lung, SK-OV-2 ovarian, SK-MEL-2 melanoma, XF-498 CNS and HCT-15 colon tumor cell lines. The responses varied with both cell line and material used. The 70% hot MeOH extract of B. mori feces (BFH) revealed potent cytotoxic activity against model tumor cell lines whereas moderate activity was observed from the MeOH extract of B. mori feces. M. alba root barks, and M. alba fruits. The other test materials were ineffective. Because of its potent cytotoxic activity, the activity of each solvent fraction from the BFH was determined. Chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions showed the most potent cytotoxic activity. In conclusion, our results may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological actions of B. mori feces. M. alba root barks, and M. alba fruits.

Screening of Inhibitory Activity of Medicinal Plants against Heparinase (수종 생약의 Heparinase 저해활성 검색)

  • The methanol extracts of 132 herbal medicines were screened for the inhibitory activity against heparinase enzyme from Flavobacterium heparinum. Eleven medicinal plants, Amomum xanthiodides, Agrimonia pilosa, Paeonia lactiflora, Rubia cordifolia, Sanguisorba officinalis, Torrega grandis, Morus alba, Gleditsia sinensis, Crataegus pinnatifida, Cornus officinalis, Paeonia japonica showed potent inhibition on heparinase activity. The active substituents of those herbal medicine could be extracted into butanol fraction and the inhibitory compounds of Morus alba are now isolating.
