  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphologic features of posterior edentulous mandible for Korean patients using cross-sectional CT images. Materials and Methods: Computed tomographic cross-sectional views taken in 2004 and 2005 at Seoul National University Dental Hospital were analyzed by an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. Four indices were measured to meet the purpose of this study: 1) the horizontal distance between the alveolar crest and mandibular canal (Type), 2) the angle of the mandibular long axis (Angle), 3) the bucco-lingual location of mandibular canal, and 4) the depth of the submandibular fossa. The averages and standard deviations of the measurements were compared according to the location (the first and second molar area) and sex of the patients. Results: Statistically significant difference was found in Type, Angle, and submandibular fossa depth between the first and second molar area (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between men and women in any of the measured indices. Most of the mandibular canals were located in lingual side of posterior mandible. Conclusion: More care should be taken when an implant is installed on the mandibular second molar area.

  • PET/CT(Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) is an examination combining morphological and functional information in one examination. The purpose of this study is to see the lowest CT dose for attenuation correction in the PET/CT maintaining good image quality when considering CT scan dose to the patients. We injected $^{18}F$-FDG and water into the cylinder shaped phantom, and obtained emission images for 3 mins and transmission images(140 kVp, 8 sec, 10~200 mA for transmission images), and reconstructed the images to PET/CT images with Iterative method. Data(Maximum, Minimum, Average, Standard Deviation) were obtained by drawing a circular ROI(Region Of Interest) on each sphere in each image set with Image J program. And then described SD according to the CT and PEC/CT images as graphes. Through the graphes, we got the relationships of mA and quality of images. SDs according to CT graph were 16.25 at 10 mA, 7.26 at 50 mA, 5.5 at 100 mA, 4.29 at 150 mA, and 3.83 at 200 mA, i.e. the higer mA, the better image quality was presented. SDs according to PET/CT graph were 1823.2 at 10 mA, 1825.1 at 50 mA, 1828.4 at 100 mA, 1813.8 at 150 mA, and 1811.3 at 200 mA. Calculated SDs at PET/CT images were maintained. This means images quality is maintained having nothing to do with mA of high and low.

  • An attempt was made to isolate suitable kinds of fungi for the preparation of Sufu, one of the fermented soybean products, and also to investigate the chemical changes during the aging period of Sufu. 1. First, from the isolated fungi 14 strains of Mucor sp. were selected on the basis of their morphological texture and agreeable odor. Secondly, 7 strains of these fungi with relatively high proteolytic activity were selected. 2. All of the pehtzes that were fermented with the selected fungi have raised the water soluble protein content to about 10% on average. 3. The amount of hydrolyzed protein increased to the 18th. day and then did not show any visible increase during the aging period. Finally, the 3 strains of suitable fungi for preparing Sufu could be selected. It seemed that one of them was probably better than the other two which were almost same as the standard fungi, Actinomucor elegans, in protein hydrolyzation.

  • To find antibacterial strains of the soil microorganisms in Korea, they were isolated from the soil samples of different locations and screened for antibacterial activity against several standard microorganisms. An isolate among them had antibacterial activities against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The examination of its morphological, biochemical, cultural and physiological characteristics according to the International Streptomyces Project methods showed that it belongs to the genus Streptomyces. This strain appears to be a novel strain when it was compared with those species of the genus which have been so far reported. The antibiotic metabolite was produced in the submerged culture of the strain. This metabolite was extracted from the culture filtrate and purified by ion-exchange column chromatography. Physico-chemical properties of the antibacterial metabolite were characterized.

  • Silver films have been of considerable interest for years due to their better performance relative to other metal films for engineering applications. A series of multi-layer silver coatings with different thickness (i.e. 0.3 um to 1.5 um) were prepared on Aluminium substrate containing copper undercoat by direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering method. For the comparative purpose, similar thickness silver coatings were prepared by electrolytic deposition method. Microstructural, morphological, and mechanical characteristics of the silver coatings were evaluated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Surface roughness test, microhardness test and nano-scratch test. From the results, it has been elucidated that the silver films prepared by DC magnetron sputtering method has superior properties in comparison to the wet coating method. On the other hand, DC magnetron sputtering method is relatively easier, faster, eco-friendly and more productive than the electrolytic deposition method that uses several kinds of hazardous chemicals for bath formulation. Therefore, a New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) for the test methods standardization of DC magnetron sputtered silver coatings has recently been proposed via KATS, Korea and a NP ballot is being progressed within a technical committee "ISO/TC107-metallic and other inorganic coating".

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the non-precious metal core materials used in the dental laboratory to fabricate the implant superstructure by CAD / CAM method. And to observe and compare the morphology and distribution of the osteoblasts in relation to implant osseointegration. Methods: In this study, the mandibular right first molar tooth model was selected as an international standard to produce a single core. Using this model, the impression was made with the silicone rubber, the tooth model was scanned, and a single core was designed and 5-axis milling was performed. The materials used were Cobalt-Chromium and Nickel-Chromium, and the cores for dental implant top structures were fabricated according to the procedures of the dental labs. After the fabrication, the marginal area of the core was separated and cell culture experiment was performed. The osteoblast cells used MC3T3-E1, which is currently widely used. For morphological analysis of osteoblasts, cells were posttreated and observed using CLSM (Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope) and compared. Results: The cell adhesion behavior of the specimen surface measured by CLSM was uniformly distributed in specimen A (Cobalt-Chromium) than in specimen B (Nickel-Chromium). The distribution and changes of the cells were different in the two specimens. Conclusion : It is possible to confirm that specimen A (Cobalt-Chromium) is suitable for the living body through adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts related to implant osseointegration in the non-precious metal superstructure used after implantation. It is considered that it is preferable to use Co-Cr when fabricating the superstructure.

  • Fermentation and morphological characteristics of rice bread baked with gums, lipids, and glutens added dough were investigated to establish the standard recipe for rice bread processing. All gum-type additives 1ed to successful formation of rice bread. Hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose among tested gums showed the best volume expansion and successful formation of rice bread. Addition of vegetable oils gave better effect on increasing the specific loaf volume and tenderness of rice bread than addition of the solid-type lipids such as margarin and lard during rice bread processing. Dry heating during baking of the rice bread gave more desirable effect on specific gravity of rice bread than wet heating. High-amylose rices such as Suweonjo, AC 27, and IR 44 showed better formation of rice bread in the case of adding 3% hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose, while Suweon 230 and Pusa-33-30 showed slightly better formation of rice bread in the case of adding the gluten and strong hard flour. The glutinous rice Hangangchalbyeo failed to the formation of rice bread in both cases of adding 3% hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose and the gluten and hard flour.

  • External morphology of three species of damselfishes, Chromis notata, C. analis and C. fumea were studied based on the samples collected from the Korean waters from 1993 to 1994. In morphology of the black spot at base of pectoral fins, C. notata has a large triangluar spot at Cheju population and a small circular spot at Sin - am. In the length of pelvic fin, C. notata of Korea can be classified into 3 groups. First group has a pelvic fin that extends to the origin of anal fin, second extends to the anus, third not extend to the anus. C. analis has higher body depth than C. notata and C. fumea in % of standard length. C. fumea has a minute serrate preopercle and no black spot at base of pectoral fins. In distribution, C. notata has a more widly distriubtion area than C. analis and C. fumea. Therefore, C. notata has more tolerance of cold waters than C. analis and C. fumea.

  • Background: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been identified as promising compounds for consideration as novel antimicrobial agents. Objectives: This study analyzed the efficacy of cecropin B against Haemophilus parasuis isolates through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. Results: Cecropin B exhibited broad inhibition activity against 15 standard Haemophilus parasuis (HPS) strains and 5 of the clinical isolates had minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) ranging from 2 to 16 ㎍/mL. Microelectrophoresis and hexadecane adsorption assays indicated that the more hydrophobic and the higher the isoelectric point (IEP) of the strain, the more sensitive it was to cecropin B. Through SEM, multiple blisters of various shapes and dents on the cell surface were observed. Protrusions and leakage were detected by AFM. Conclusions: Based on the results, cecropin B could inhibit HPS via a pore-forming mechanism by interacting with the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. Moreover, as cecropin B concentration increased, the bacteria membrane was more seriously damaged. Thus, cecropin B could be developed as an effective anti-HPS agent for use in clinical applications.

  • In this study, eco-friendly functional leather was developed by recycling wastes such as eel skin, marigold(Tagetas erecta l.), hinoki cypress(Chamaecyparis obtusa). The hot water extracts of marigold and hinoki cypress leaves were freeze-dried at $-80^{\circ}C$ to prepare colorant powder. The dyeing of eel leather with marigold was carried out to investigate the effects of dyeing conditions, mordanting on dye uptake, color, morphological change, and color fastness. Considering shrinkage of eel leather caused by dyeing, the optimum dyeing conditions were $60^{\circ}C$ of dyeing temperature and 60 min of dyeing time at 1:100 of bath ratio, and color of the dyed eel leather was Y to YR Munsell series. In order to prevent the degradation of leather from microbe, we conducted combination dyeing with marigold and hinoki cypress leave colorants. In this case, the combination dyed eel leathers showed excellent antimicrobial activity with above 99% bacterial reduction rate against S. aurieus and K. pneumoniae. It was confirmed that all of the dyed eel leathers were sufficient to meet the Korean Standard for color fastness of leather products. It can be applied practically for the development of eco-friendly functional leather by utilizing some useful active components extracted from plant resources and by recycling food wastes.
